Melodi Goldraven I can't believe those freaking stereotypes. If a female and male loves each other that is usual and sweet but if a male loves another male is it a indicency? Oh god. Children must know that gay peoples are human too. So I'm grateful to Rick. And I love Nico. He is so nice and warm hearted. And I adore Pernico.
Btw I'm straigt but this is my fight too. I can't stop myself when someone insult another human community. Please leave your bloody prejudices

Same. I do have to say though, I do not like the same sex as me. I am completely straight. Although, I will not go against gay rights. That is not my business to deal with.

okay yeah i get the whole everyone i allowed an opinion thing and agree with it and if you have a problem with gays and such thats your problem, but where YOU cross the line is when you say stuff about how horrified and dissappointed you are. are you aware of the millions of people who are gay or bi or trans and suddenly there is this hero who has problems with his sexual orientation and they are silently thanking Rick Riordan for someone they can relate to, then they come one this site to comment and as they are scrolling through they see this and i for one can say that it feels horrible to know that for every person who does support LGBT that there are those that dont and feel an unsatiable urge to declare it for anyone to see.

but then again i suppose you will be horrified to have been acknowleged by someone who isnt 100% straight huh?

i would say im sorry but im not, if you get sincerely offended then maybe you will know how ot feels to be hated on for the way you feel and are

message 4617: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 27, 2015 09:55PM) (new)

It's a cheap "twist" to boot.

Rick is relying on shock value. A clever twist takes something we believed from the beginning and turns it on its head. Like Snape being good. Riordan never has anything worth bringing back, he just makes it up as he goes. What's even meaningful about that?
And he caves to popular opinion on top of it. Cheap.

Screw labels.

Nobody even knew what "being in love" meant in the first place.
I only believe in free will and doing the right thing despite how we feel.

These pseudo "orientations" and genders are just the spawn of Tumblr narcissism.

On the other hand, in this era acceptance of non-heterosexual orientations and non-cisgender gender identities means that this could be the first time we learned about them and that people are open about it, and that they existed in history but were suppressed.

Of course, a large swathe of these orientations and identities (especially the niche and/or single-example ones) are likely the product of Tumblr narcissism, Special Snowflake syndrome, and the psychological impact of the Participation Trophy Upbringing on a new generation entering the real world and having the reality that they aren't as special as their parents said they were thrust upon them.

But some of them are genuine, mostly concentrated on the less ludicrous end of the spectrum, but every once in a while a perceived crazy won't be delusional, and what they described is an innate and immutable part of their identity.

Being unable to accept what gender you were born as is an innate and immutable part of their identity?

Um....NO. Your gender is not a flaw. Saying you're "more like a man" or "more like a woman" is the real stereotyping.

message 4639: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 01, 2015 08:55PM) (new)

As for being gay, it doesn't matter HOW you feel. It was never just about what we "feel."

Free will means choosing to act on feelings or not.
You're belittling your own selves.

< soapbox>

You're conflating sex and gender. Sex is the biological characteristic largely defined by your genitals, and is usually simply male or female. Gender, on the other hand, is a component of one's identity, and comes from social constructs one's neuropsychology. For most people, their sex and gender line up. This is not true for everyone, though, which creates a dysphoria (an intense discomfort, opposite of euphoria). As all attempts to "correct" gender dysphoria through reparative therapy have ended with the person who underwent it still dysphoric at best, and dysphoric and traumatized at worst, the general consensus is that the treatment is to have them identify as what they truly feel they are, although the level of transition the person feels necessary varies from dressing as their identified gender to hormones to reassignment surgery.

< /soapbox>

As for free will and homosexuality, I think we have irreconcilable philosophical differences, in that I feel acting on your feelings is usually A-OK if everyone's consenting and no one is being harmed.

message 4641: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 03, 2015 10:13AM) (new)

Gender is a modern made up concept.

Traditionally, sex and gender were synonymous acknowledgments of the body which realized anything else was not significant. You yourself support social constructs by stereotyping and putting emphasis on the material things. (you are a girl because you want the hello kitty shirt).
The body is not the flaw, it's making the social constructs (that YOU insist on encouraging) so much more important than they ever were.
Girls and boys can do/be/act/dress however they want. That doesn't change what they are. There's no merit in teaching them that image has more value than a simple biological truth, or that acknowledging it is somehow wrong. However, putting emphasis on image for its own sake IS harmful. That shallow, materialistic way of thinking is what really leads people into depression and suicide (I don't care what the articles say).

In the beginning all that any "social conventions" were for was mere acknowledgment of biological fact. In our culture of narcissism we put the conventions themselves on the pedestal.

Also, putting too much value on sex is harmful to the people involved, and nobody deserves to be told that's an innate and immutable part of who they are. If we do not draw the line when body parts literally do not fit together, where do we draw it?
Once again, we put importance on the wrong thing.

Ray I feel like his whole "using nico to make a statement on homosexuality" is part for why he completely fked up book 5. Stick to what you're good at, and don't bring public opinion bs into your stories. No "surprise" homosexual chars, make obvious that people can like from the bottom of their hearts. Peace.

message 4646: by [deleted user] (last edited Oct 07, 2015 08:55AM) (new)

Yeah, I'm sure Tumblr has its good points, but you have to admit: it does attract the narcissists. The ones who want to have an image. With nicknames, custom avatars, profiles, long winded bios, 100 question about myself tags, cute memes about ourselves, making an image for yourself was never easier. A lot of the time, people don't even realize how much time they spend thinking about themselves. And I only say this because I was one of them. I grew up with this crap. Now I get to call it out. These days people are extremely narcissistic. You can't even share an exciting story with a teenager girl without them saying, "oh yeah, IIIIII do that all the time," and they go on a big thing about themself, etc. Everything is about how it relates to THEIR image. And then they rush to post everything and show off, because. Their. Life. Is. Their. Image.
This is where all the crappy labels come from, whether they be "random" (to whoever remembers that phase) or "pansexual." It's all just the same stupidity. I firmly believe that. I'm sorry it ever escalated into a political topic, because it doesn't deserve it at all.

Ray When 4 books hype up the last book so much and then the author gives you something many times worse than any of the past four books, it's natural to be a bit upset.

^This.

I could have spent my time on other books, it was like he didn't care and wanted to get this series done asap!.....

With that said, I'm still going to try the first Norse book to see what it is about.

If it's trash.... never touching Rick again, although I'm not in his demographic range anymore. Maybe that is why I disliked this book so much and the book before it. Too corny and "kiddie" for me, with how it approaches serious matters.
