Our preferences can play a role in our choices, but don't dominate who we are. Ever.

I believe we are not but dust and shadows. Awaiting death to bring us back to what we truly are.

That was very poetic. Where did you steal that quote?

"Being gay is an identity" that is what you said, that is the worst part of it, people use it as an identity, that is why i used the word excuse, cause it is, people use the excuse "i am gay, it is my identity" all the time.it is not an identity.saying i am an American is not an identity, it isn't what make you you, same as being gay does not define if you are kind or mean or sad, it is not an identity, it is a label, and there is a BIG difference.

I used part of it from the infernal devices.

Matthew, I don't think you got the point of what I was saying.
I can't help it that blue is my favorite color either. I can't make myself like yellow more.
By its NATURE however, it is a preference.
And preferences don't RULE us (regardless of whether or not we're capable of changing them).
In fact we must put our preferences on hold all the time, because they are the least important of things.
If I put someone else's needs above my own, despite what I "prefer" this is not "hiding part of myself away." It's realizing what's more important than my own feelings or wants.
How can anyone base their IDENTITY on what is ultimately a preference? That is a terrible message in any event.

All icing is good my friend. Blue or yellow.
Wait. I thought you said icing...

Abby, I think I agree with that statement. XD

By preference, I mean it's just something that we "like."
I don't mean we have the ability to change WHAT we like.
I'm just saying that no matter what, the fact that we "like" it isn't the most important thing in the first place.
(just for clarification).

*says in dramatic voice* It is our choices that make us who we truly are.

Whatever you meant by that, all I meant was that Rick Riordan shouldnt have had Nico's personality to be gay. I said that he should have had Nico believe in something else or something because he should try to teach kids that being gay is ok, not saying thats it right or wrong. Bisexual and gayness should be written down in Rick's Adult books and not books aiming at kids and teens. AND WHETHER YOU PEOPLE KNOW IT OR NOT THE DISNEY INDUSTRY ARE PROGRAMMING SEX AND BISEXUALITY BASED SUBJECTS IN YOUR MINDS. There are many hidden sexual images in Disney's movies
. This is just a thought and for y'all who don't believe me go the this link. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yR6pd...

I misread your point; sorry about that. It's just that sometimes people use "preference" to imply one's sexuality is a choice. I overreacted.

Ah, the time-honored "this doesn't belong in a kid's book!" defense. To quote the relevant portion of the FAQ section of Riordan's website:
I’ve been lucky enough to teach all sorts of students – fifth grade to twelfth grade, rich and poor, from numerous ethnic backgrounds, with diverse religious traditions and a variety of learning differences. I’ve also taught gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Some self-identified as early as elementary school. Some came to terms with their sexual orientation later in high school. Most had a hard time during the middle grades, which are tough years for any child. All my middle school students enriched my classroom. They made me a better teacher and a better writer for children, and they all deserve my support.(my emphasis)
I am committed to writing appropriate books for the middle grades. This means no bad language, no gratuitous or explicit violence, and no sexual content beyond what you might find in a PG-rated movie – expressions of who likes whom, holding hands, and perhaps the occasional kiss. The idea that we should treat sexual orientation itself as an adults-only topic, however, is absurd. Non-heterosexual children exist. To pretend they do not, to fail to recognize that they have needs for support and validation like any child, would be bad teaching, bad writing, and bad citizenship.

I didn't mind it that much. I guess making it into a big deal would mean it's a big deal when Nico has moved on. I can see what you mean though!

Matthew, I really think that was more of a red herring than anything, to be honest. Most of the points on this thread seem to be.
Remember when someone called me prejudice because I used the word muslim? You guys need to lighten up and be a little more fair and open to what people are really saying.
You'll find there are less "hateful" and "judgmental" people out there than you think. Just people looking for truth, who might have a couple valid points if you didn't write them off. We're talking about tolerance, right?

If anybody gets anything out of what I've been saying on this thread at all, I hope it's to not unfairly write people off as "hateful" or "a bully" or "ignorant" without FAIRLY trying to hear them out as a person, for what they're sincerely saying and not what you want to hear. No matter WHICH side they're on.

sorry

I agree with most of what you said, except for calling sexual orientation a "preference," because that implies it's a choice, while in actuality it isn't. Just a pet peeve of mine.

Right, scratch preference, call it an ummmmm birth inhibited fancy? Idk I made that up, but still I get your point and I agree with you as well

Any of you read the last book? (I didn't read it)
You can spoil all you want. Not going to read it.....
Does Leo get Calypso? Or does he die in a blaze of glory?

Typical Rick. Let me guess, (view spoiler) Am I right or am I right?
Please tell me Piper dies.

Thanks I guess? And the posts cursing Nico for his sexuality got me fired up
Teaching kids that "love" is about two people worshiping each other IS wrong. (No matter what their sexes).
Homosexuality makes the means the end. Romantic love leads to marriage and being open to a family. Not a selfish game between two people, which is all homosexuality can ever be.
Telling people this is the important thing is the real hate.
Rick Riordan portrays love in a very corny, shallow way in all his couples. He makes the means the end. It's not just about being cute together and holding hands because you have a feeling. (And if so, it is absolutely NOT important compared to the sacrificial love between a husband and wife). These books are a waste of time if you are looking to them for ideals. People deserve better than this...
Teenager relationships are a waste of time anyway. Everything about this is so dumb.

By the way, how do you define hate?
It's a little close-minded to always call it hate just because someone disagrees with you, don't you think? Or maybe the 11 year olds who commented 5 years ago on this thread just weren't expressing themselves that great over a fictional character? Lighten up. People who love to see hate always will.

They don't WORSHIP each other: love and worshiping are different definitions (in both gay and straight cases). For "selfish game" between homosexuals, half the heterosexual race is doing pretty much the same thing but they don't get the discrimination homosexuals get, do they? You have your own beliefs and opinions on homosexual and/or heterosexual relationships, but it is yet another thing to label the gay community of what they do with their love and how "selfish" they act compared to other people. It is immature to tell other people how to live their life, to each their own. And if you resent the books so much and can't find any ideals in them wtf are you reading them then?!
