I have a problem with his being gay.

Call me homophobic but that's just how it is. It's my belief and it's not like I'm forcing everyone to dislike homosexuals, I'm just stating my own opinion. Period.

message 3652: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm friends with a few gay people myself. I don't have a problem with them like I isolate myself or something. I view homosexuality separately from the person it applies to. I have a problem with Nico's homosexuality, for example, though not Nico.

But this whole him being gay thing just does not fit in the plot in the first place.

message 3653: by [deleted user] (new)

That's kind of mindblowing. I can't imagine any of them like any of that at all. Especially Nico

message 3654: by [deleted user] (new)

I guess it would be funny and interesting.

Kevin So, it's starting back up?

message 3657: by Hailey (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hailey Excuse me, but I am a christian and I totally supported the whole Nico being gay thing. I am actually happy that he included something like that because I know a lot of authors don't write about this kind of stuff because they're against it. I am happy to know that one of my favorite authors of all time isn't against gays. Also, to those people who said that most of the people who read his books are children; they're like fifth graders and up, maybe throw a couple forth graders in there, but I am in high school and I know plenty of other high schoolers who have read this book. For myself, I've read the Percy Jackson series 27 times. #AllForNicoBeingGay

The way Rick Riordan talks about any and all romance is 100% moronic and shallow, so if these books are supposed to sway people into viewing gay as normal, he's doing it wrong. (So far it just sounds like a big joke to me).

Snowdrop, Daughter of Apollo Excuse me sir, but these books are for entertainment, not trying to make things seem normal.

message 3661: by Allison (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allison Then why IS he making things seem normal, like every stinking person being "in love" with their "perfect match"? Which actually never happens in the teenage years ((unless the teens are lucky))?

message 3662: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin Paintbrush (Nyx) wrote: "Excuse me sir, but these books are for entertainment, not trying to make things seem normal."

A great Author can take the normal and make it entertaining.... Rick in some ways takes the normal and makes it boring, or takes the entertaining and makes it normal.

But hey, different strokes for different folks. I found the romance to be "uneasy" inducing, anytime I read some lovey dovey crap I started shifting in my chair. Rick really can't write Romance, or maybe he can(didn't read his adult books) but the dumbed down version he uses for his Young Adult/Kiddie books sucks and makes me uneasy when I read it. Maybe because it's forced?

I only rated this book so high because of nostalgic feelings(and fearing to rate a book too low even though I didn't like it). I am proud to say I've broken out that fear so if the last book deserves a 2, a 2 is what it gets.

I rated it higher than I should've just because, I mean, it's Percy Jackson here. It's my favorite series. I'm kinda biased.

Did you forget Reyna, Octavian, and Leo? They haven't found the other half yet. Well, Leo is an exception, but he slightly hated Calypso at first, didn't he?

Allison Paintbrush (Nyx) wrote: "Allison ~God's NOT dead~ wrote: "Then why IS he making things seem normal, like every stinking person being "in love" with their "perfect match"? Which actually never happens in the teenage years (..."

Actually...

Reyna has two love interests. Percy and Jason.

Leo has Calypso.

So the only one is Octavian, and he's a bad guy.

I guess I should've explained more clearly.

I sincerely hope not, because he is utterly failing. In fact, he's doing the opposite. Teen "romance" holds no credibility whatsoever with me anymore, nor does being "gay" or even calling yourself "ADD," to be honest.

This overly politically correct load of crap is proving how clown-ish it all is. It's such a game, just like fanfiction.

We are people with choices and responsibility. If you're hyper or don't know how to spell, or have delusions that you're "in love" with someone (goes for "gay" and "straight" teens; crushes are so obscure we shouldn't take them so seriously) I'm not calling you a special name for it.

These are the things I learned from entertainment.

I'm just trying to say that the more I research many of the things in these books, the more I see them as just more Hollywood-like exaggerations and fantasy.

Of course people are going to tell me, "well, it's just for fun."
Is it....????? We're labeling people this stuff in real life! This is clearly not being taken as fantasy.

Bottom line, these books are way too politically correct.

You're responding with lyrics from a pop song?

*face palm*

Stick with your skin-deep, meaningless quotes and corny books then... there IS nothing to understand about that worthlessness.

Snowdrop, Daughter of Apollo Don't you know what that song is about?! It's about equality and accepting who you and others are. If you don't understand that, then become more open-minded.
Or I'll send Smaug after you...

I already explained all this ten times, but I'll do it again.

This is NOT an issue about bullying or hating people. Shame on you, and people who write over-emotional, strawmen filled song lyric propaganda for portraying the issue so dishonestly.

This is a fight over what's RIGHT, and BEST for somebody. You can tell me we're misguided, but don't tell me we're full of "hate" or "fear."
What a disgusting cowardly lie to keep hiding behind.

"But we paraphrase a book written thirty-five-hundred years ago"
Again, YOU are the ones who are obsessed with the Bible. Just because there are corresponding religious beliefs, does not mean there are not original valid reasons for the beliefs, which I have been explaining over and over and over here. Thank you for completely writing me off and discrediting everything I have been trying to tell you for months now. It's extremely close-minded, and again dishonest and cruel to treat someone like that, you hypocrites.

Read the link I posted about how you can't be born gay. Respond to those arguments. Stop being so close-minded. You can't shut me up by repeating so many meaningless phrases. Dive a little deeper.

message 3683: by Allison (new) - rated it 4 stars

Allison Books these days are messed up. Enough said. Even this series is flawed. Way flawed.

--There are too many characters who have a crush or are in love, and don't you say "RACHEL ISN'T" because she probably still has a crush on Percy. The only ones who aren't involved in love that we know of are Octavian and Chiron and Lupa. That's sad.
--Admit it. The couples drooling all over each other gets on your nerves.
--It's starting to repeat itself. And get predictable.
--There are some characters who are still made out of cardboard. Like Jason. And Piper. And Reyna. I can't wait for her POV, by the way.
--Nobody dies! I mean, you'd expect at least ONE of the seven to die but NO. They are still alive!! Riordan has only killed off side characters and Luke. And I didn't even KNOW the side characters and I didn't even really cry for Luke! I mean, duh, he's the bad guy!
--Guys. PLOT TWIST. We know that Gaea will be defeated. The bad guy is always defeated in these books.
--Plot holes. Such as this one: in the Sea of Monsters, Blackjack was called a "mare," correct? When in the other books, he was called a "stallion."

Okay. There is a lot of flaws with this series. There's a lot of flaws in the world. This conversation has seemed to get pretty serious, so you know. I'll just watch from the sidelines and jump in when I need to.

Abigail I'm just sad because I recommended this series to my younger friends (9yo) and their parents are fairly strict on what they read and I'm embarrassed because I thought they were clean. I'm only finishing the last because I've read ALL the others and need to know how it ends but I'm very disappointed (this isn't a huge part of the book yet so I don't see why it's valuable. unless RR want's to kill him off --which I don't care because I don't have a connection to him--) and how come you get to decide when they are introduced to that? Are you their parents?!?!? the series gave no warning to this!

Calling yourself gay is shallow.
So is calling yourself straight.
So is saying you're in love when you're a teenager.

Stop the fan-fiction mentality already.
Just get married when you're ready to have a family with someone.

You can't be born gay.
You're born nothing, and it's up to you to make good choices, not self-indulgent ones.
Get married when you're ready to have a family with someone. It's not a game about romance for the selfish sake of romance. It's not 50 Shades of Gray or fan-fiction. Romance for the sake of romance will always be selfish.
