Heart27 Haha, I loved Nico when he was first introduced, totally interrogating Percy XD He's really had some character development over the two series, and I think Riordan did I good job, not making the changes, though major, happen instantly like in some series. Nico's character development was perfectly paced and I love how he turned out. Although I don't think being gay is really in his character, I still love him.

Yeah I loved Nico from the beginning too, RR didn't make that a mistake also Nico being gay won't be that bad but it was a shocker.
Nico had a few hints on some books, mostly in The Mark of Athena he was fairly nervous when Percy asked him to lead them.

To be honest, I love Rick for doing this. There are millions of kids out there like Nico who are confused and scared. They get bullied a lot just because they find love in their own gender, and people can't accept that. These kids are angry with themselves for being them and conceal their feelings because they are embarrassed of who they have become. We've grown up in, a society that gave us the sterotype of girls and boys together. Rick Riordan gave us two book series that are full with different races, kids who struggle with ADHD and Dyslexia, and sterotypes. Remember when Annabeth wished that she wasn't blonde so people would take her seriously? And Annabeth is the smartest demigod in that series and she's affected by dumb sterotypes like that. And all of a sudden,a gay character comes along and everyone is angry. When a child like Nico reads their favorite book only to find out that a character that they cherished for years is just like them, they would feel really relieved. Relieved that all that anger is justified.

No, Rick stated that this isn't a part of an agenda. He knew Nico was like that.

Edit: There's so many spelling errors in there. Please excuse them. :3

Personally, I haven't gone through the self hate that gay kids are going through (I am 100% straight) but I think you're absolutely right. Many people are failing to realize that not only is Nico's revelation not a bad thing, it's a good one. It's remarkable that so many people are still against gays despite the drastically changing world around us, where in being homosexual is becoming more and more common. It's sad that people are still homophobic and that kids are forced to feel not only different, but WRONG. Haven't people realized by now that soon things like this will be accepted, perhaps even normal? It's sad to think that people are still basking in their ignorance about how things have changed and that if they expect to survive, they'll need to become more tolerant and accepting of differences amongst people. Gender differences have been accepted. Race differences have been accepted. Religious differences have been accepted. We have become much more accepting in the last hundred years, of various things that originally set us apart. We worked through it and came to accept it. So what's stopping us now?

Because being a pervert really equates to the those other things that you can't help. That goes for self-labeled "straight" people too (unless they just say that out of stupidity).
Over-analyzing how you feel about sex isn't the same as being a different race, and I'd argue that not all religions are equal either. Some can be evil... (or untrue), but I digress.

(and if gay is just supposed to mean that he "had a crush" on Percy, then we're in trouble. What the heck is a crush? Feelings? What a stupid thing to base your sexual orientation on). o_O Are these really where our priorities lie? The so-called "straight" couples were crappy enough. Piper and Jason? Leo and Calypso? Give me a break.

I'm not afraid of people who are "different" for that reason. This isn't some thing about a princess standing on a cliff saying, "but father, I must do what I feel in my heart is right, we must not be afraid change." IT'S SEX. Geez. Time to grow up.

Crappy Young Adult romance is crappy.
(Besides, it's just part of an agenda and not a very convincing one. So corny).

I agree somewhat. And you are right about a lot of YA romances. In almost all young adult novels, there's a forced romantic interest. Close to every single one I've read has had it. It's kind of annoying, especially in novels where romance DOES NOT belong.

message 3419: by Sarah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Sarah When I first read it, I was 100% surprised. But it all makes sense. Like when Nico asked Percy if he and Annabeth were dating. Or when everyone thought Nico liked Annabeth because of the way he always got angry or left the room whenever Percy and Annabeth were intimate or anyone mentioned them as a couple. He didn't like Annabeth, he liked Percy!

Personally, it doesn't bother me at all that Nico is gay, it just really took me by surprise.

I think it's wonderful that Rick did something like this, and I believe he did it just to show us that his books would never be predictable, and that there could be twists and turns at every corner.
And then there's the fact that this shows that he's totally sporting gays, which I think is awesome. It shows that Rick is a brave man, though it saddens me that such an act can only by someone who is brave, for the world is a very judgemental place. Rick knew he might loose some readers in this act, but he did it anyway.

Great twist! I think it's too cute! Can't wait to see how the rest unfolds <3

message 3423: by Sab (new) - rated it 5 stars

Sab That's the thing though, why does mentioning someone being gay suddenly become a mature topic? It's the same as mentioning a boy liking a girl, it's exactly the same thing. There's nothing about being gay that you have to hide from children. That's what Rick was trying to show.

Riiiight. Because people who are against gay behavior don't know gay people are "just people like you and me."
Corny, crappy arguments like that don't do ANYBODY any good. :/ Is that as deep as you guys get? Writing everyone off as mindless bullies and haters? So open-minded.

(Then again, if you live your life according to as equally corny of a mentality as the Percy Jackson books...I guess it would be that simple) Hope none of you commit suicide or go hide in the Underworld for years and years because you can't face people who might have different opinions than you!

It's mature because unlike with girls and boys, it leads to a perverted, unnatural act. There's a big difference.

message 3437: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin It's getting annoying with people trying to put being gay as some "virtue".

It's as if they are saying that when you are gay you are better than others.

In current society all you have to do is "come out of the closet" and you are instantly rocketed into stardom, and called "brave" it's getting really annoying.

People are people, doesn't matter if you straight or gay people are scum and that is that.

Gays get divorced just like straights, this foolishness with the media romanticizing gay marriage is also annoying. All they want is tax cuts like straight couples, if you really cared about being with each other a piece of paper that lets you pay less taxes shouldn't matter.

If you haven't realized I think marriage is a waste of time and money in this day and age and current society.

Marriage was used to "legitimize" your kid, we don't have need for all that now. The whole Marriage thing in the bible(yes that is what marriage is based on religion, it's funny how many atheist want to get married) was used so you wouldn't take another man's woman as your own or take your mother, sister, Aunt or some other female relative as your own.

Don't give me none of that ultimate show of commitment foolishness either.

They say "till death do we part" and they divorce.
They say you're not suppose to lie out of wedlock, that could mean don't cheat on your spouse or no sex before marriage.

Ugh I don't have the will to continue.

Jennifer I didn't really suspect that Nico was gay in any of the other books, but throughout HOH I kept getting the feeling that he was going to be gay. I wondered if I was just reading with my slash goggles on like I do all the time, but it didn't surprise me when it was revealed that he had a crush on Percy.

I just hope that Rick doesn't kill Nico -- it's really common for authors to kill the gay character off and I don't want Nico to die.

How is it common for the gay character to be killed off? What's one example, I've never seen it (although to be fair I've never been reading a book and then have a character introduced as/become gay)

Don't know if it's often, one example of a gay person that "got the kill" that readily comes to mind was in The Night Angel Trilogy.

It's common for the "speshul" characters to get killed off, that's for sure.

message 3445: by Cinder (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cinder I keep thinking about it, and honestly, the hints were there all along. He was always acting really jealous whenever Percy and Annabeth were around and together, even though he doesn't really show his emotions. I just figured, "Oh, he has a crush on Annabeth, how cute." I think that's probably what Rick Riorden wanted us to think. It really was a complete surprise to me, I wasn't paying good enough attention.

message 3446: by Kevin (new) - rated it 4 stars

Kevin Cinder wrote: "I keep thinking about it, and honestly, the hints were there all along ..."

There is a logical fallacy where people fill in the blanks, change historic events that happened to match a current situation/ideal or change/distort facts about character traits.

There weren't hints all along.

I see this a lot with fans, the author changed something and people swear that the person/thing was like that all along. It's like they are trying to cope with the change, so they invent all these things to fill the void and trick themselves into believing that they liked it all along. Or they just want it to be true so bad, that they go and change past events that could be used as double entendre or hidden meanings as their proof.

Say the person was a "God fearing Christian", then all of a sudden they are sleeping with 50+ people and killing; these fans will say, how they are killing because it's God's work and make up some other foolishness to explain the wild sex.... It gets crazy
