Ariel That doesn't mean you shouldn't try. Yes, all those things are horrible, and people are working to stop them too, but the last thing you should do is give up. Speaking your mind about what you feel is right should never be disregarded.

I guess you don't read the news much. Gays are being attacked and killed in places like Russia, Uganda, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Iran. The governor of Mississippi just signed a bill into law that allows discrimination against gays on the basis of one's religious beliefs. Gays and lesbians can denied employment and housing in 29 states on the basis of sexual orientation. Marriage equality is still illegal in the majority of US states as well.

Please tell me that gays have it any better than any other minority.

Kevin David wrote: "I guess you don't read the news much..."

I do read the news but my comment was talking about the "US" and how they go about it. They are attacked in Africa, Asia, etc yes, but do you see that level of violence in the US? No.

The Russian issue, last I heard it was the people(public) over there that wanted the laws put in place(the country's birth rate is on the decline so the powers that be probably are looking into every possibly available to them, also Russia is a very STRONG Christian country), the ones being prosecuted probably could have found better ways in addressing the issue... but they went the route of what they see people do in America thinking it would work for them... as I said before, America =/= World.

Again as I said in how many pages back, how would you know someone is gay? Unless they go around trying announcing it you don't know, that Law could be used to deny anyone the person didn't want to serve because their "religion" won't allow it. Muslim, Indian, Blacks, Chinese, etc, etc all can and probably would be targeted seeing which State it is... The Gov probably going to step in.

David wrote: "Please tell me that gays have it any better than any other minority. ..."

That minority thing.... it's just.... they are labeling gays as a minority, it will be Whites, Blacks, Hispanic, Latinos, Asians, Gays..... yea I don't think that labeling is right.

I really don't want to get into this on a Goodreads page, the thread was actually getting back on topic when the "venting" started again. No one will listen to others or consider their opinions, it will only be "I'm right and you're wrong", one side will start up then the other side will react....

I'm getting a suspicious feeling, that people are just lurking, waiting for someone to say something they don't like, then they can spring.....
You know what I do with most of these comments? Ignore them, because "trying to convince" isn't going to do anything; you're just forcing your views upon someone else and how likes to be forced?

When I posted that piece up there in my previous comment, I just stated the facts as I gathered them from different sources(I swear to you someone is going to ask me for a citation for these "facts"). People are ignoring deeper issues, that if fixed could lead to a better society in place of self gratification... it's just sicken what gets swept under the rug and what gets blasted on media outlets 24/7.

I probably won't be back until I finish my current book. So when I do return there is probably going to be 10 more pages with people and others who saw their friend's update pages(and didn't even read this book), telling me how I am such a bad person and that I am wrong.

I know right! I'm wondering why he would even have thought of that in the first place, much less actually put it in there. I'm not against gays, don't get me wrong, but I think we can agree how that bit could draw some controversy especially from parents, and a YA fiction is hardly the place to start playing social politics. I think it would have been better if it had been left out, but it doesn't really overall change the book for me. Nico is still my favorite character.

I completely agree about kids being able to decide for themselves. You're completely right that kids are far more intuitive and insightful than they're given credit for. I bet if a younger child joined this discussion, people would notice no difference from the adults talking, although they may be less judgmental about it.
Although, I have one question about your post: When was there a reference to rape in the series? (If it is in the House of Hades or the Blood of Olympus, both of which I have not read/completed, don't tell me)

message 3361: by David (new) - rated it 4 stars

David Wickham I don't remember any rape references. I haven't read the books in a while but I'd think that would stay with me.

message 3362: by Heart27 (new)

Heart27 True, which is why I'm confused that Cecerose put rape was mentioned. I don't mind topics like that is a serious novel, but a more lighthearted series like this, it is not the place.

MaddyLeeReads Jαṡṃïṉε wrote: "Not reading the last book because of Nico's little "episode". This is inappropriate, and I will have nothing to do with an author who supports gay rights. This is violating, and horrifying."

How is it inappropriate and horrifying? This is in everyday life! What's wrong with an author who supports gay rights? He is supporting the idea for EVERYONE to have happiness in life and not be discriminated against who they are. Let me guess..anti-gay rights? Figures.

Now I will leave this specific topic alone and discuss and talk about what this discussion is suppose to be used for.

MaddyLeeReads Honestly, this whole gay thing is getting tiring and people should just learnt to accept others. You should all watch this one video on youtube of what would it be like if being straight was "bad" and the norm was being gay. It sends a very powerful message.

Oh! I meant in general, or in Greek myths, to be more specific. Not anything explicit in the actual books. Greek myths are littered with rape stories, which are featured/ referenced in the series, though Rick probably didn't actually say /rape/ by name. I'm pretty sure at least a few kids who read the series have figured that out by now though.

and wow. How is this thread even still active? I feel like it never ends omfg

message 3368: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris Meads Maddy's right. This is getting to be a bit old. Gays have been around for a long time and I am not offended by them. I have a few friends that are gay. As long as they don't force their lifestyle on me, I'm okay with it. They're not trying to harm anyone, they just want to live their lives their way. And as for kids learning about it, what about those families that have either two males or two females for parents. Don't you think those kids know that their family is different? So if Rick wants to put it in his book, so be it. Kids have to learn sometime. I can remember the time when a black person married a white--that was taboo. Now it's commonplace and accepted. So gays will be the same way.

message 3369: by Chris (new) - rated it 5 stars

Chris Meads Comments here--why shouldn't kids learn about gays? When my kids were growing up, they learned there were kids that were different from them--kids that used wheelchairs, kids with spina bifida--they learned to accept those kids. So why can't we accept gays? We could learn a lot from kids. (And I'm not gay besides but they are people and have feelings just like the rest of us.

Aayush {Ryo} You guys are acting up too much, on this gay thing. I don't like gays, sure, but that does,'t mean we can't accept them, like us accepting black people. (No Racism trying to be implied).

Please, grow up... the only thing I think is inappropriate is your ignorance. An author who supports human rights? HOW HORRIBLE!
Gay people exist. They have been children, just like Nico. They love, they breathe, they talk, they live. GET OVER IT.

message 3389: by Vanessa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vanessa I knew it since Nico's first appearance in Titan's Curse! Here's some hints uncle Rick has given us :
- In Titan's Curse, Nico asked Percy "Is Annabeth your girlfriend?". I think that's his way on asking if Percy's single
- In SoN, he acted so differently around Percy

there's more hints but I forgot what they are, I need to check again

message 3390: by Vanessa (new) - rated it 5 stars

Vanessa I like how Rick makes Nico gay/bi. Those gay/bi people needs to realize that they're not alone and it's completely normal for them to be bi/gay!

Unbroken Silence My friend claims to be "The No. 1 PJO/HOO fan", but refuses to read HOH after I told her about Nico.
Me: ...

A few people have mentioned that it was "inappropriate" for Rick to do this in a children's book. These people are essentially implying that homosexuality is inappropriate for children, and they should be kept away from it.
Me: ...

Really, I think I should have seen it coming. If you reread the series there are several hints. Which means... RICK WAS PLANNING THIS!!!
RICK WAS PLANNING TO MAKE NICO HATE HIMSELF AND JUST GENERALLY FEEL WORTHLESS WITH A MISERABLE LIFE
Me: ...

Overall, je ne suis pas impressed. I love nico and this doesn't change the fact he is an amazing character, but I wish Rick could've written it without making Nico hate himself for it.

message 3395: by [deleted user] (new)

I agree with you, Azula! :DD It doesn't change anything about Nico. He's still an amazing character. He just has a lot more depth in him.

Unbroken Silence Yup.

I showed the nico chapter to my mum because she wanted to know why I was so emotional. All she said was:
"There's supposed to be a semi colon there... This could be better written... Aww that's sweet... Another semi colon there... A comma instead of that hyphen"

English teachers huh?

message 3397: by [deleted user] (new)

LOL. XDD That sounds a lot like my mom too. She's a part time tutor. -rolls eyes-

Unbroken Silence TheBlondeGirl wrote: "Is anyone else getting to the point where they don't care about what happens to everyone else and just want Nico to have a happy ending? I am."

Me too. Rick said he deserved a happy ending, so maybe we can cross our fingers. Then again, when someone responded "I'm so glad you won't kill him" he said "I said he deserved a happy ending I never said he was going to get one" (paraphrasing here)

Sometimes I really, really, REALLY hate Rick Riordan. In fact, make that authordom in general.
