because children or children and they aren't read for that and if we all fell in love with the same sex the human race would go extinct

Cherie Hahahaha xD nice logic. Love isnt all about reproduction... Sometimes it's an emotional connection with somebody. I know, crazy right?

Tj Analise wrote: "I think that it was a very nice move by Rick to put this in a book. It's becoming more accepted so we will see it more often. Kids need to know about this and parents need to step it up and talk to..."

why do kids need to know about this stuff gayness is innapporiate even regular straight is inapporpiate sometimes

acualy it is what do you think making love means lezabian

message 855: by [deleted user] (new)

Rick did a nice job of including it, and he didn't make a huge fuss, which made it a cool plot twist.

message 856: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie Homosexuality is not inappropriate. It is not unnatural. Just because your bible says it is, doesn't make it so. A kid mentioning a crush in a book is not inappropriate and just because that crush happens to be on somebody of the same sex doesn't make it any more so. Homosexuality is something that all ages deal with whether you want to believe it or not. You're just gonna have to learn to deal with it.

message 857: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie Yeah and maybe learn to spell "lesbian" while you're at it.

Sheechiibii *sigh* religion really has no place in the discussion. Whatever you believe is simply that - a belief. But gay children exist and it's more important to make sure they feel safe and loved than to pander to some other random persons belief they can't even prove.

As for the logic that because you can't make babies means you shouldn't fall in love - what about infertile couples, old couples, I suppose they shouldn't have love either. As for the argument that it's inappropriate for children, if they're old enough to know what a crush is, then they're old enough to know not everyone crushes on the opposite sex. Simple.

and it also sounds lil you are trying to convince yourself that is rick was doing

Catherine Tj wrote: "are you saying african American people are a minority race be careful how you phrase it"

First, African Americans could never be a minority race. One simple reason: African American is a nationality, not a race. Now if you mean "black", that's a different story, one that doesn't belong in a thread about Nico's orientation revelation.

Second, I've read through all your posts in this thread, Tj. You can't decide for others based on your god. Your god is not everyone else's god. Morality changes from religion to religion, country to country, income to income, culture to culture, etc. One single representation doesn't get to decide for everyone else. That's how oppression happens.

message 862: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie African Americans ARE a minority race in America. >_>

message 863: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie Well yes actually you're right Catherine.

message 864: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh my gosh, TJ, can you stop spamming the thread with your opinions, I'm pretty sure we got it the first time. If you want an answer, then how about you look at previous comments on this. I hate how we keep having to explain over and over and over again -_- This thread just keeps going back and forth to the same things. IF YOU WANT AN ANSWER, LOOK AT PREVIOUS COMMENTS PLEASE. Thank you.

Totally agree with you, Cherie.

and you say I'm horrible I'm black so watch your self Bitch

ekarifin Back to Nico... I've discussed this matter in different thread. You know what... If gay is really your concern, actually you don't need to.
And if you find it is difficult to explain it to your children, please read the book again to find out about how Nico adores Percy. Nothing said that he is gay there, Rick Riordan is a smart guy, it is just the part of the plot, a brilliant one. Besides, having crush to the same sex doesn't make Nico a gay, because what he feels toward Percy is more than 'like or love' Nico sees Percy as his savior, the one who save him and his sister Bianca back in Percy Jackson Book 3. Percy is simply awesome, even a cold kid like Nico adores him.

message 873: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie I'm one to talk? I'm not the one out here talking about how inappropriate other people are just because they have a different lifestyle. I'm not the one saying I hope I don't have a gay child. Do you understand how many gay children end up committing suicide because they feel like their own parents don't love or accept them? Or that many parents end up disowning their children, or worse try to beat the homosexuality out of them? Have you ever for a fraction of a second put yourself in the shoes of a gay child? The bullying and the threats that so many children go through every day simply because they are different.. Have you ever even considered that? I saw a gay friend of mine threatened EVERY SINGLE DAY before he had to transfer schools. A transgender kid was beaten up a week after she transferred to my school in an attempt to escape the beatings she received at her last school. Now you sit there and tell me that I'm being hateful because I won't let you sit there and make rude hurtful remarks about others?! Give me a break. You are the reason Rick did this. To teach children acceptance, love, understanding. To teach children not to judge so that MAYBE one day we can live in a world where people aren't judged by their ethnicity, or their learning disorders, or gender, or even their sexuality.

message 874: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie And I don't give a damn what color you are. I said blacks are a MINORITY! If you don't understand the definition, look it up.

message 875: by Evan (new)

Evan I loved this twist. Not because of the shock value, but it took on an issue that has been pressing on our society.
I fully support gay rights and I think that it makes Nico an even better character. Anybody whose saying
"Oh, being Gay is a sin, I'm not gonna read the last book because of this", then that's too bad, because I am. It doesn't matter what the sexual orientation of Nico is. Some great book characters were gay.
(Dumbledore).
Rick Riordan shows children that being Gay or having a same sex crush is fine.
Nico forever.

message 876: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie And don't you dare call me a bitch!

message 877: by Evan (new)

LOL... me too. Always love him, no matter what. A guy who could summon dead army from thin air... just AWESOME...!!!

Evan Cherie wrote: "Referring to tj... Haha"

Sorry! I thought that you were one of those gay haters but it is apparent to me that that is not the case. My humblest apologies.

message 882: by Cherie (new) - rated it 5 stars

Cherie Yeah... I don't just randomly shout to people not to call me a bitch. :p haha and I think I've been pretty clear that I stick up for gay rights.

message 883: by Evan (new)

Evan I love Rick Riordan he's a quality writer.

message 884: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah I used to really be annoyed with history and myths but ever since I read The Lightning Thief in 5th grade I've been in love with mythology. I love how he took something I disliked and made it into something I love so much.

goblin gender RR was pretty smart to use Nico in this way. It really opens the mind and totally adds another level to the story.
and also, Grace, dont think im cyber bullying you, but in my opinion kids should learn about that kind of stuff in the 5th grade so that as they mature, they know its ok that ethier them or their friend is homosexual. It will help them devolp and grow. it really annoys me that adults dont think kids are as mature as they actually are.

message 886: by [deleted user] (new)

My very own sisters don't support gay rights even though I really try to make them see sense. People deal with this kind of stuff everyday. They love Rick Riordans books but they aren't going to be reading it anymore. It's really sad to see people like this in my everyday life and it's certainly worse when it's my very own sisters.

Sheechiibii I agree with you completely Cherie.

Also can I just point out that being a minority is simply mathematics, nothing insulting about it unlike calling someone a bitch. Unless you don't know what minority means...

Blogger Girl Tj wrote: "Sev -the best is yet to come- wrote: "I honestly don't understand how people could stop supporting Rick because of this. No matter what your beliefs, it is a fact that homosexuality exists, and it'..."

AS IF!!! we are already thinking of ways to LIMIT our POPULATION

Blogger Girl Tj wrote: "Sev -the best is yet to come- wrote: "I honestly don't understand how people could stop supporting Rick because of this. No matter what your beliefs, it is a fact that homosexuality exists, and it'..."

AS IF!!! we are already thinking of ways to LIMIT our POPULATION. so I don't think we'll get extinct anytime soon

Blogger Girl I can't believe that was even a point as to not to support homosexual. maybe better reasoning would be better

Blogger Girl *laughs* we shall

Catherine H99 wrote: "Yeah, extinction simply because we aren't reproducing because everyone is homosexual is not going to happen. The majority are heterosexual; Nature will take care of that."

Even if the entire world were homosexual, I'm fairly certain that our culture would evolve to compensate. I mean, people would probably have ritualistic "mating" periods where a man and woman would get together purely for procreation.

So yeah, we're not going extinct any time soon.

Sheechiibii ^ adds to that. Also, technology is at a point where men and women don't even need to have sex in order to have a baby. Surrogate mothers and sperm donors anybody?

Blogger Girl LET THE ARGUING BEGIN!

Blogger Girl why not? go for it

Blogger Girl we could but that would be too hard. the thing is, we do need to argue and have conflicts in order for the world to move forward as sad as that sounds but when people start fighting for selfish reasons then it gets -_-

message 897: by Joesatmoes (new)

Joesatmoes I was completely shocked when I read this. I am still in that,"WTF?!" stage. Dont get me wrong, I do support gay rights. And I see that Rick is trying to make that a normal thing for kids to accept. But it just doesn't fit what I thought of Nico! I mean, I thought the angel being gay was okay, cuz I didn't know his character. But I cannot think of any moment where I would have thought he was gay. I mean, people thinking he had a crush on Annabeth would make sense-especially since he seemed to have a soft side to her in Percy Jackson 4. And it was very smart to have a twist to that- but I thought it would be something like him thinking of her as Bianca (though there was already Hazel for that, I suppose). But I just can't get used to Nico being gay.

Can anyone state some signs-like actual quotes from any of the books that could signify this?

message 898: by Joesatmoes (new)

Joesatmoes and fyi- after I read this, I felt very emotional for Nico. I mean, he's had to struggle with so many things in his life- adjusting to a different time, knowing his mother was dead, knowing he was the son of Hades(the most hated god ever), not being accepted because of who his father is, and now fear of not being accepted because of being gay.He always feels alone. And he can go through all this AND be strong enough to fight evil. And he's like 14-my age! I gained some serious respect for Nico this book

message 899: by Joesatmoes (new)

Joesatmoes Joy wrote: "I agree with Aurora that the House of Hades has done an excellent job of showing us one thing - that when the parents aren't around, the kids' lives are very difficult. There is nothing wrong with ..."

Well, like Cecerose said, this series mirrors real life problems. All good authors do that- to make it relatable- for example, in Harry Potter, there was racism(Muggles, Muggleborns, etc), slavery (house elves), corrupt government (Ministry of Magic), and dictatorship and ruling through fear (Voldemort).

It is good that an author finally tries to do this about the issue of homosexuality being a bad thing, and accepting. This is what real-life thing that the Percy Jackson and Heroes of Olympus books do- teach acceptence (gods need to accept their children, major gods accepting minor gods, Annebeth with Tyson, Satyr Counsil to Grover, all the demigods on the Argo accepting eachother). This just makes it closer to the real issue of acceptance we have today

I don't think that we should always resort to violence when arguments go the wrong way. I always say that we should have a friendly and respectful debate but sadly some people are just too aggressive for their own good :(
