I seriously, like legit, thought I was dreaming it was so unexpected... I read that chapter late at night and I had to reread it the next morning because I thought I drempt it. when I reread it I was freaking out! :)

The thing is, there aren't "gay people" and "straight people". There's only PEOPLE. Some happen to be gay, and some straight, but they're people before they're anything else.

All these people are just proving more and more why this was necessary... Obviously more authors need to follow rick's example.

It wasn't an attempt to seem mature. The whole point of the Heroes of Olympus series is to teach that any child can be a hero, whether you are a guy, a girl, black, white, Asian, Native American, ADHD, dyslexic, or yes even gay. Rick Riordan is CONSTANTLY sticking up for the minorities by giving them strong characters to identify with. Rick Riordan's books teach children acceptance and understanding of others if you think he all of a sudden did this to seem mature then you haven't been paying attention.
Add Mexican to that list, I forgot about Leo.

Rick did not say he 'just threw it in' he said it was something he discovered about Nico as he was writing him. Which would make sense considering he was, you know, only ten years old when we first met him. If I was going to write about a ten year old kid, I would not be thinking about whether they were going to grow up to be into girls or guys.

Riordan said that he didn't plan on Nico being gay initially, which is when he was writing The Titan's Curse. However, I do believe that Riordan had been forming plans since the Son of Neptune - possibly earlier. I believe there were several comments earlier on this thread where someone pointed out a bunch of hints from The Last Olympian.
Rachel is also in heroes of Olympus where she became an oracle. A mere mortal that became an oracle...
And she had an important part in getting Reyna to help get the Athena Parthenos back to camp half blood and unite the camps... So if you wanna talk about her in HoO, we can do that too...
I don't want Nico to die, but he seems like the most likely hero to get killed in the next book.

The fact that Rick made Nico gay gives Nico a higher chance to die than any other character. I'm so sad, I fell in love with his character right when we met him in the Titans Curse :( After all that time, I don't want Rick to just kill him off.
When I said "besides frank" I meant that I think he's more likely to die than nico... But it could be both o_O if Rick is feeling extra evil. Hopefully he's not taking notes from Suzanne Collins, George r.r. Martin, jk Rowling... Etc. haha
It's not only about the wood... It's also about his mother. She died sacrificing herself in war to save the others... If I know anything about foreshadowing, this is a major thing to consider.
Rick was really brave for putting this in the book. He knew he was going to get a lot of hate, but he did it anyway. I respect him for that. He's an amazing writer, and some people are just hating.

@Janna It gives him a higher chance to die because most authors usually kill off their gay characters because they don't know what to do with them. Nico is obviously going to be turned down by Percy and I don't think Rick is suddenly going to make another character gay or bring a new character into the book (when it's the last one) just so that Nico can have a boyfriend. I feel like if Nico can't have anyone, and he's going to be left heartbroken, then Rick is just going to kill him off. That's why I think Nico has a higher chance of dying. Of course this is just what I think. You don't have to think the same.
I'm getting irritated by how everybody thinks every single character needs a boyfriend/girlfriend to have a happy ending. I don't think Rick will kill nico just because there is nobody for him. Rick has more respect for his characters than that.

I don't have a crush on anyone at the moment, but I've had crushes on guys before. If we went by your logic, because of my current crushless state, it would mean I am asexual or aromantic, which is definitely not true in my case. We don't know if Nico is gay or bisexual but he is definitely not straight, Rick Riordan even confirmed it, and it is even implied in the book that he is not completely over his crush on Percy.
I had a thought right now.... What if frank and Hazel both die?? Or at least what if frank dies, and Hazel goes back to the underworld (since she is technically supposed to be dead.
Andromeda, listen. Remember when Jason said something like he didn't think that Nico moved on from liking Percy. He still thought that Nico likes Percy. Remember when Nico got a pained look on his face when he saw Percy with Annabeth? That means he still likes Percy. Therefore, he is gay because Percy is a MALE. He still likes Percy. He didn't move on. He's just telling himself that because that's what people do when they want to move on but they can't. Nico can't move on. He likes Percy. He's gay. End of story.

Also, you can't turn off your sexuality like an on-off switch. Just because he said he was over his crush on Percy does not mean he never had a crush on Percy. If he had a crush on Percy EVEN ONCE he is not straight. Straight = You only like someone from the opposite gender. ONLY. Otherwise you are bisexual/gay/pan, etc. He may be bisexual, as it was never explicitly stated what his exact sexuality was, but he is not straight. Did you read what I wrote at all earlier?
I'm going by what has been said so far in the book and by what Rick Riordan has said. I have no reason to believe that he is bisexual because he has never mentioned liking a girl. Furthermore, again, Rick Riordan has stated that he is GAY.
