Walking back home, Marcie noticed a freshly painted storefront down the street. Curious and always delighted to see what books the store might hold, she deviated from her course and walked over to the door. For a moment, she just eyed the books in the window, reading the titles slowly, then giving a shrug to herself, she stepped through the door.
Bastian sat behind the counter of his new desk happy to have finally opened. He was just sipping a cup of tea mixed with a bit of blood like cream when the bell over the door jingled. He put down his cup and stood. "Welcome to Fletcher's rare books and curios, how may I help you today?" He said not seeing who the woman was due to the glare of the sun through the front window.
Upon hearing his greeting, a smile broke out across her face and her green eyes lit up as she stepped closer so he could see her. "Well, well, well. Mr. Fletcher, you've seemed to come to a great start," Marcie commented.
Bastian smiled at the voice. "Hello Marcie, welcome welcome!" He adjusted his glasses and gestured to a stool.
Casting her eyes about before taking a seat, Marcie thought how wonderful it must be to be surrounded by so many books. Glancing over at Bastian, she smiled again. "Was a store in your plans? I would have come sooner if I knew you opened one. When did your doors open?"
Bastian chuckled and sat down. "No a store wasn't in my official plans, but I had always wanted to open one, so I did it." He smiled softly, lips shut. "As for opening, we just opened officially last night, so you are the first customer! Sense you are, I think I can give you and deal on something, everything in the store is 75% off today." He winked at Marcie and smiled again.
She laughed and clapped her hands together with delight. "My, it's my lucky day, isn't it?" Marcie shook her head at how odd fate works, making her dark curls bounce. "Well, I guess I'll have to browse around. I read that Dracula book and found it really interesting. Any more recommendations?"
"Well, if you liked the fantastical aspect of that book you may want to try or The Arabian Nights. Those are both novels of interest and the latter contains many fabulous tales." Bastian said, become slightly more animated as he always did when talking about books and literature.
"Arabian Nights sounds exotic," Marcie said thoughtfully. "And what is the other one like?"
"The other one is a story of a misunderstood monster and the reaction of the town to his appearance." Bastian smiled and took his glasses off to polish them.
"Sounds similar to the Dracula one, though maybe a little different." Marcie tilted her head as she considered it. "Maybe I can buy both?"
"I happen to have copies if both in stock." Bastian smiled, lips closed, and put his glasses back on. "Would you like me to get them for you?"
"Sure!" Marcie looked excited and she leaned forward in her seat as she smiled brightly at him. "That would be most wonderful."
Bastian nodded and stood, leaving his tea on the table. He headed to the packed shelves and, after a moment of searching picked out to bound books. He put them under his arm and headed back to the desk.
While he was away, Marcie got back onto her feet and was skimming the bookshelves nearby. Turning her head when he returned, Marcie's eyes lit up, looking at the books in his hand. "You found them!" She stepped forward towards his desk. "You know, I'd be happy to pay the full price. Just to help your business."
"Nonsense, opening day and you're a friend." Bastian rang up the books and placed them on the desk. "Five pounds, sorry, dollars please." Bastian smiled shyly. "Still getting used to these American dollars."
Giving a wave of her hand, Marcie searched in her purse with the other. "Oh, that's all right. You're doing fine," she reassured him as she procured the right amount and held it out to him. "And thanks for giving me such a special treat."
"Anything for a friend." Bastian said. He sat down on the stool and crossed his hands. "Would you like some tea? The store has several back rooms that I have turned into a house and I've turned one into a full kitchen."((Sorry I hit done before I had finished :\))
"Tea would be lovely," Marcie said happily, taking the bag of books and hooking it on her arm.
Bastian nodded and went into the back room. After a moment he came back with a steaming ceramic pot of tea with Chinese characters on it. "Luckily I made a pot earlier." He poured a cup and passed it to Marcie, then he topped off his own cup.
((That's all right! Sorry that I disappeared for that bit))Taking the cup, Marcie examined the teapot, looking at the artful strokes making the characters. "You know, I've always been fond of teapots. Just makes me feel like a lady, I suppose," she remarked as she took a sip.
((Don't worry about it ^_^)) Bastian sipped his tea, the mixture of tea and blood actually surprisingly good, at least to him. "As have I, I always keep an eye out for a good tea pot. Tea is invaluable to me for my late nights of studying."
"Keeps you awake?" she asked with a raised brow, thinking how her solution for late night article writing was coffee instead of tea.
"Aye it does." He sipped his tea and smiled.
((Sorry for the briefness! A little busy at the present moment, but still on.))
"Have you enjoyed Boston so far?" she asked conversationally after a pause.
"I have in fact." Bastian said after taking a sip of his tea. "All the people I have met so far have been quite lovely and kind."
She smiled over at him. "Well, that's good. I take it I'm one of those people?" Marcie winked at him playfully.
Bastian smiled and put his tea down. "Yes, I would say you are."
Her eyes brightened as she laughed, setting her cup down as she leaned closer to him. "Honestly, it's easy to trick you men into complimenting myself," Marcie said with amusement, her smile widening.
Bastian laughed softly, trying to keep his fangs hidden. "Oh but I meant it as a compliment." He leaned on his elbows to match her gaze.
"I see," she said, raising a brow. "You know, a woman like me could take compliments to the head."
"Could you? Well we wouldn't want that would we." Bastian's lips twitched into a small smile.
"Not at all," Marcie agreed, mocking seriousness. "It could be devastating to my health."
"That it could." Bastian nodded. "It could swell your ego and make you British again." He winked at her smiling.
She burst out laughing, the usual hint of snorting coming in, much to her embarrassment. "That would never happen. Nothing could ever make me British," Marcie replied, slightly out of breath.
Bastian chuckled and shook his head. "Oh you Americans, I'll never understand you completely, not that I don't enjoy the company."
"It's all right. It just adds a mysterious flair to my personality," Marcie commented with an amused smile and a wink. "You'll have to get used to it."
"I'm sure I eventually will." Bastian leaned back a little and sipped his tea.
Raising a brow, Marcie looked over at him. "Does that mean you'll be staying long enough to get used to it?" she queried, unsure if she was bordering on personal matters or not.
"I assume I will be, I have no indication on how long my business in America will take." Bastian sipped his tea and was silent for a moment, thinking.
She nodded, taking her cup of tea. "I see. Well, I hope it's enough time for you and I to become friends," Marcie said with a kind smile.
Bastian smiled softly, the edges of his lips raising. "I hope that too." He put his cup down, having finished it.
Glancing up at the clock, she set down her cup and turned to Bastian, her smile more apologetic. "It seems it's about time I should get going back to work. Thank you for the tea and the discount. You sure know how to treat a customer."
"You're welcome, and thank you for dropping by." Bastian stood and walked with her to the door. "Drop by soon." He said with a smile.
"Don't worry, I will," she said with a grin, turning around to face him. She went on her toes and kissed his cheek. "Really, I hope you and I can be friends," Marcie added.
Bastian blushed slightly, having a little extra blood in him he managed to colour his normally pale face. "I, h-hope we can too." He smiled softly, but in the back of his mind he felt a turmoil at the girl in front of him and his Lilly.
Smiling back, she gave rubbed her lipstick off his cheek, then turned to leave. "Have a good day, Mr. Fletcher," she said over her shoulder, waving. Then she was out the door and on the street.
