The Purloined Letter by Edgar Allan Poe. It was a very enjoyable read. Wish it was a little longer.

You know they do in some spots, like reviews and other stuff, but not everywhere, plus you can just hit reply and say "i like" :) Or we can just say DITTO
I like the purloined letter as well!

DITTO :)
I recently finished The Fox by D.H. Lawrence and Ragtime by E.L. Doctorow, both very good books. Last night I finished All quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque which was brilliant but also the most gruesome and depressing thing I've read in a long while, maybe ever. I definitely need something light now!
Finished Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency last night, also on the SciFi and Fantasy Bookclub shelf. Great stuff!

The Ground Beneath Her Feet. I may need to go and refresh myself on the myth it's based on. Interesting book. Definitely not my last Rushdie. I have The Satanic Verses slated for next month.
Just finished Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. What an entertaining book! Don't know why I didn't read it before!
Rusty wrote: "Just finished Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne. What an entertaining book! Don't know why I didn't read it before!"Great book this. Now try Eighty Days: Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland's History-Making Race Around the World for a completely, but not, different vision of this.
Just finished Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov. I moved through it slowly because the story is told through footnotes on a poem. Lots of flipping back & forth, lots of poetic languages to sink your teeth into. I went in with trepidation, but enjoyed it a lot. Despite the high degree of "metafiction-ness" it's still a compelling story with more than a little humor. And even...slapstick? Who knew?
Kaitlyn wrote: "Just finished Villette. It was brilliant."I'm completely in agreement with you there, Kaitlyn.
Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh.Written in a Scottish dialect, crude, dark, and full of filthy language and graphic depictions of heroin addiction. Not an easy pill to swallow (no pun intended), but pretty brilliant.
Just finished The Sound and The Fury. My goodness this is just incredible. Emotionally fatiguing but just some awe-inspiring writing. Looking forward to more Faulkner when I've recovered! Five stars (would give more if I could!).
My first and only Faulkner was As I Lay Dying. And I hated it. Read it in high school. Wrote a scathing critique of it. Got an A on my paper with the comment " I guess you didn't like the book"
I've read Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury and Light in August. Loved them both, and plan on reading a lot more of him.
I've just finished Primo Levi's 'The Drowned and the Saved'. Probably one of the hardest books I've ever read, but I'm really glad I did.
Mekki wrote: "Mrs. Dalloway - A good read. Something to read and reflect on."I just finished Mrs. Dalloway as well! I can't say it was one of my favorites, but it was definitely well written. :)
The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner. Started out very good, but I got bogged down with the actual memoirs bit.
Genia wrote: "Finished Capote's In Cold Blood, which was really interesting and well-written."I read that a few years ago. It was excellent.

Beautiful sensitive writing."
I've been meaning to read that for ages. Hoping that 2014's the year for it.
Karena wrote: "Mekki wrote: "Mrs. Dalloway - A good read. Something to read and reflect on."I just finished Mrs. Dalloway as well! I can't say it was one of my favorites, but it was de..." It was pretty good. I'll follow it up with The Hours later on.
I just finished The Stranger. An outstanding first novel.Camus questions life, religion, death and a person's relationship with world. Another book to reflect on.
Finished The Devil's Pool by George Sand. I really like George Sand's prose and I actually also liked the story. But as it is listed as a gothic tale I had hoped for something creepier.

I enjoyed Mrs. Dalloway but I loved The Hours.
Erika wrote: "I just finished Rebecca. I really don't know how I've overlooked this incredible story for so long."I hope to read that here within the next few months.

I also liked The hours more.
Just finished Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. Gave it four stars; really fast paced and quick read. Now thinking in the lingo :D
