Finished Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake

Dree, how was Titus Groan? That's one I haven't heard much about.

I liked it much more than I expected! It is often called a fantasy, but I wouldn't call it a fantasy at all--no talking creatures, no dragons or other fantastical creatures, no magic if any kind. Just an ancient society run on tradition and rules. There is a lot of description but it didn't bother me. Gormenghast (also on the list) is book 2 of the trilogy, I will be reading that soon, and I'll probably read the third which isn't on the list. I just have to wait on the library. (I think Undermajordomo Minor and The Buried Giant were both influenced by this book/trilogy.) on mobile, can't link, sorry

Sounds interesting! I'm not a big fantasy reader but I might read this, since it sounds different from the norm. I saw some reviews saying that it's dense and difficult to get into. Did you find it so?

There is a lot of description, but I didn't find it dense. I went into it fully expecting not to like it, so maybe I had low expectations?

Finished Swann's Way by Marcel Proust. It was slow going in the beginning and I didn't enjoy the recollections of his childhood. But the introduction of Odette and their history made the story more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Just finished The Marriage Plot and enjoyed it! Felt it got a little slow towards the end but overall was a nice read.

Finished The Waves by Virginia Woolf. Just beautiful.

Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. This is the first book I've read by Ellis. I thought it was well written with well defined characters and a style fitting for the storyline. I didn't particularly like any of the characters, but Ellis said some serious things through them. Clay's coming of age amidst the decadence and wealth of his peers an family is not a pretty sight.

Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgren

I know I have read this before (out loud), and I think it was read to me just a few decades ago. But I had no record of it. It really is much more enjoyable to read it with at least one young kid who will find Pippi's antics hysterical.

Finally came to the end of "The Handmaid's Tale." I have read here where it was loved and a favourite of all books, and I truly did not enjoy it. Lots I did appreciate though...the prose at the beginning of chapters,; The Narrator herself; the little acts of kindnesses that were life risking. But the "Tale" was monstrous. And I think, a little too close to home!! Scary for sure!

It has the highest rating on Goodreads of all her books but is only the 5th most-rated. A case of only the real Woolf-lovers reading it? Is it better than To the Lighthouse (which I have in my to-read list)? I did enjoy Orlando, weird as it is.

I liked it better than To the Lighthouse, which I also liked. The language is much more poetic and the stream of consciousness flows perfectly. Of the works of hers I have read, I would say it is most similar to A Room of One's Own. I still have not read Orlando.

I loved The Waves, it's really poetic and beautiful. I've read To The Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway, The waves impressed me, one of my favourite books ever.

Finished David Copperfield by Charles Dickens. I've read several of his works thus far and I think this is my favorite.

Dickens had 11 novels & novellas in the original Boxall edition, reduced to just 4 in the most recent edition. Hopefully 1 or 2 will be restored in the next? I've read 6, would like to read The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby- next. I think Bleak House is my favorite so far.

According to the app there's 10 novels. I'm using the complete edition. What was the novella mentioned? I've read seven thus far and will be starting Bleak House this month. You'll like Nickleby. I really enjoyed it.

BTW recently read It Can't Happen Here (not a list book) by Sinclair Lewis (who is a list author). The fascists torture one of the main characters by burning his complete illustrated Dickens. Reason for burning: "That guy Dickens—didn't he do a lot of complaining about conditions—about schools and the police and everything?"

i've read this book (and the trilogy) three times. one of my favorite fantasy books....but it's strange for sure

Titus Groan and Gormenghast are brilliant. but the third book, Titus Alone, was written while Mervyn Peake was suffering from the effects of Parkinsons and ultimately dying before finishing. This really shows in the book which is a lot different in style, feeling and imagery than the first two.

I just finished Justine by Lawrence Durrell. Although the writing was wonderful in its ability to describe so perfectly and poetically, overall this book was just not my cup of tea. I gave it 2 stars. This is the first book in the Alexandria Quartet, and the only one on the 1001 list. I don't see myself continuing with the remaining three books.
