Nicola | 770 comments A Severed Head - this was just, wow. So outrageous I'm not sure if it's meant to be taken seriously or as a sort of madly f****d up allegory. There was more bed swapping going on than in a Playboy mansion.

Dree | 160 comments Finished The Iron Heel by Jack London. I didn't love the writing, and obviously the technology is 100 years out of date, but read it on serial reader which made it manageable. However, this election cycle this felt relevant :(

Carol | 104 comments Just finished Nostromo, lots of action an d interesting but not a favorite 4*

Kirsten (kmcripn) Just finished reading The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks

I did enjoy it, but I'm not sure I think it belongs on the list. I am impressed he got it published in 1984. Of course, he did publish it in the UK. Wonder how hard it was to get it published here in the US?

Jennifer W | 251 comments Just finished Fingersmith. I really liked it! Such characters and plot twists! I'm not entirely sure why I needed to read this book before I died, but I'm glad I did!

A Gate at the Stairs by Lorrie Moore. I have no idea why this book is on the list.

message 2909: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments Middlesex - Very enjoyable although it wasn't what I was expecting. There was more focus on family and US history and less on genetics.

4 stars

Everything Is Illuminated - After I got about 1/4 into this novel, I was always eager to read more of it. I listened to it on audio ebook, and enjoyed listening to the Ukranian-accented character who told the modern part of the story, and found I developed a lot of empathy for him.

Amy the book-bat (batkisses) | 35 comments Evelina by Fanny Burney I found Evelina to be quite enjoyable. I can see why Jane Austen liked it so much.

I read this for a book group read and i don't think anybody had a bad word to say. I really liked it - 4 stars i think and i don't rate all that many books that highly.

message 2917: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments Finally finished Walden by Henry David Thoreau. I liked the first half of the book very much: How and why he lived in the wood alone and self-suppliyng for two years.

The second half was.... I don't know,... maybe I did not understand it. He take a lot of detours in his writing. Struggling my way trough the last part I came to the concluding chapter at last and were delighted to find it crystal clear and full of quotes I already knew – just not that where from here. For example:

"If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer."

3 stars. The start was almost 5 star.

Kirsten (kmcripn) I just finished Under the Net by Iris Murdoch Under the Net by Iris Murdoch.

I really enjoyed it. However, I do have trouble verbalizing just what it is about Iris Murdoch I enjoy so much.

message 2919: by Peter (new)

Peter | 443 comments Just finished Excellent Women by Barbara Pym. If it had not been on the list then I would probably never have picked it up and I'm still not sure that I would have missed out on something.

message 2920: by Aileen (new)

Aileen | 154 comments Finished The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien, a very gentle and easy read. I remember reading some O'Brien many years ago, but don't think this was ever one of them. 4/5

message 2922: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments I read Foundation - a far future where apparently women have the same participation in society as they used to have back in the 1700s and Santa Evita which was very unusual. It's listed as fiction but I have classified it as non-fiction.

Rated 4 stars and 3 stars respectively.

message 2923: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Ah yes, a society where women know their place... and everybody is probably white and heterosexual too. LOL!

Heterosexual I think yes, there was no mention of skin colour.

I did like it a lot. Great sense of place and time (a poor section of Cairo in the early 1940s). Great character development, too. I have read three other books by him that I have also really enjoyed (The Cairo Trilogy).

message 2934: by Lasse (new)

Lasse | 14 comments I just finished The Cement Garden

message 2935: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments Fight Club - The movie was actually better. I think the only book to movie conversion I have ever said that for before now is The Devil Wears Prada.

It's not that the book is bad, it's great, it's just that the movie is tighter, better scripted and both the ending and the 'big reveal' is better done. More surprising and more dramatic.

3 1/2 stars

But that one's not on the list. He has one other book listed however, Choke.

Ian | 143 comments Finally made it to the end of Daniel Deronda. Not my favourite Eliot. It is my 100th book from the 19th century though, so I'm feeling chuffed with myself today.

message 2938: by Nastaran (new)

Nastaran | 3 comments Just finished Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. As i had read the summarized edition of this book which had been prepared for child in my childhood, i did not interested to go and read it whole book again. But I really enjoy . He has nothing in this island except hope for living and with this hope he could survive there for 30 years alone.

Oh yes, it's on the g1000 list. They're side by side on my spreadsheet. I ticked off the wrong column.

I really liked half of it. That novel was really two stories squished together.

message 2941: by Carol (new)

Carol | 104 comments Finished In the Heat of the Day today. Would someone please explain how we know about Harrison plan for Stella? I have other questions but don't want spoilers in my comments. Good book but somethings just were too "hidden".

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Vicar of Wakefield by Oliver Goldsmith

message 2949: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Mysteries of Udolpho - interesting story at bottom but I got sick of excessive scenery and the drip of a 'hero'. The poetry was also awful beyond my words to describe but I just fast forwarded through it as soon as it started so I can't say it really annoyed me.

2 1/2 stars
