A Marmite book you will either love or loathe it.

Stacey (hippiebookreader) I just finished my first book from the list. The Fall of the House of Usher - Edgar Allan Poe

Edit to add: this has been on every year's list since 2006.

I've been thinking about reading that since I've been trying to get a better understanding of gothic horror. How does it hold up all these centuries later?

Play It As It Lays by Joan Didion (US). A short but powerfully-written work about a depressed actress. Very good.
Also a couple weeks ago, The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo (France), also very good, though I suggest skipping the chapter on old Paris architecture unless you're interested in that.

Fools of Fortune by William Trevor (Ireland). Interesting story, nice writing. Works in some 20th century Irish history.

I read it last year. It's not a difficult read but a bit dull at times. It stands more as the mother of Gothic Fiction than on its own literary merits.

What did you think of it? It took me forever to get through it. I could only manage 1 to 2 pages a day!

It definitely wasn't easy read. Original idea I suppose, but honestly I just didn't understand it so I didn't get anything from it.

Not a happy book, but I enjoyed reading it more than I thought I would!

JenniferAustin (austinrh) | 5 comments I just finished The Year of the Hare by Arto Paasilinna. What a demented and wonderful book! I have already requested the only other Paasilinna title my library owns.

My review: "This book is a gem. Think a Finnish mashup of Don Quixote, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and Monty Python and the Holy Grail...."
