The Golden Notebook by Doris LessingAfter about 50 pages I was about ready to throw in the towel and give up, I felt that it was boring. But I persevered and even on completion I'm still unsure whether or not I made the right decision.
I just finished The Colour Purple. I'm glad I read it while I'm in the middle of doing my Read Africa challenge - it made the part set in West Africa more evocative.
Like Life by Lorrie Moore. It took me some time to decide I liked it. I liked the way the stories were only kinda linked together.
Also finished, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. This had some moments of amazingness. Fun and strange at the same time.

Treasure Island by Robert Louis StevensonDefinitely got more out of this one than when I first struggled through it in my teens. Fun to read when I'm in a piratey mood from watching Our Flag Means Death and in preparation for watching Black Sails.
Re-read Père Goriot by Honoré de Balzac. . .. . . which I last read 50 years ago in high school.
I remember enjoying the book back then, but not having the depth of understanding that I do now. It's a sad commentary on the lengths parents will go to for their children; with the result that the more you indulge your children, the less they appreciate it. (Not always, of course -- but much too often) And the book is quite topical in its scorn toward the demands of society.

I got a copy which I plan to read probably near the end of the year. Your rating makes 4 of 4 of my GR friends who rate it 4 or 5 stars.

I should re-read One Hundred Years of Solitude, it's been a long time.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold by John Le CarréI am not sure if Le Carré is my cup of tea. This is my second book from him and I don’t love it as much as others seem to.
1Q84 by Haruki MurakamiTook me four months!! I enjoyed reading it, even if after finishing I'm left being like "wait, what?"
I finished James Joyce's somewhat autobiographical first novel:
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
Rating: 3 stars

Her Privates We by Frederic Manning. World War 1 trench warfare from a private's viewpoint. I rated 4 stars.
The title come from a line in a Shakespeare play- Hamlet I think.
