Finished Joseph Roth The Radetzky March and Arthur Schnitzler Lieutenant Gustl (None but the Brave). Very interesting reading these two close together. They complement each other very well.

Finished The Lord of the Rings First time reading it, I have always been afraid of it because I usually don't enjoy fantasy. I tried my best to keep an open mind while reading it but I didn't like it.
Home by Marilynne Robinson. Great book. Actually it was greater than I thought it would be. I'll read it again, someday. Maybe very soon.
The Power and the Glory by Graham Greene. "Hope was an instinct only the reasoning mind could kill. An animal never knew despair."
I just finished The Magic Mountain. My second Mann book, but this one is far longer and filled with philosophy.
Chess Story by Stefan Zweig. A very short and easy to read piece. It didn't grab me the way some of the shorter works on the list did. But I still enjoyed it.
The Journey to the West, Revised Edition, Volume 4 by Wu Cheng'en The completion of the first of the Chinese epics for me.

Congratulations! I'm about 2/3 through the 1st volume. What did you think of it?

I finished:
The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by Douglas Adams
Rating: 2 stars

Finished The Mistress of Husaby by Sigrid Undset, 2nd book of the Kristin Lavransdatter trilogy. I'll start the final book in a month or two.

I'm 70% through it. I'm probably going to rate it three stars also, though it has its moments.

I'm sorry you weren't able to enjoy it. I think there are a few fantasy books on the list. Hopefully they won't be as long as The Lord of the Rings.

Thank you, Debbie, for posting that link. That looks like it might be a good source.
I read the Beckett poem. I don't think I even failed better to understand it.
Finished Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. I had an old paperback copy I bought for a few cents. I might have enjoyed this more if the translation hadn't been so very bad.
Thanks for compiling the list of shorter books to read :) I just finished "The Little Prince"! Can't believe I haven't read it before.

One of my favorite books! Glad you enjoyed it.

Finished my second reading of The Cider House Rules by John Irving. It's a great book. Also a good choice for a book club if your other members don't mind a long read. So much to talk about in this book.

One of my favorite books of all time! I once went to a reading (of another book) by John Irving and he‘s so nice too.

Sandi wrote: "FINALLY finished Gargantua and Pantagruel. The best part of that book was the afterword by the editor that put Rabelais' life into historical context. Bawdy Rabelais was not for me."That's one of the longest books on the list. I'll be sure to read the afterword first.

How did you like it?"
I liked it. At times it reminded me a little like a melody the way he repeated some of the words forwards and backwards. It was definitely deep the way he spoke about being sick and dying and the way people look at you when you are in a bed sick and dying like in a hospital room. And what it means to be sick and keep getting sicker until eventually you die. I don't know if that was what he was actually talking about but that's what my take away was.
