Edgar Finished The Reader by Bernhard Schlink, a short post-war novel about guilt, betrayal and deception set in Germany. Pretty good.

Pooja Peravali (malarkeymanor) Just finished Ethan Frome, my first Edith Wharton - and sadly I was not impressed. Please tell me her others aren't so melodramatic? I'll have to get through them, after all, if I want to complete the list!

Inadvertently wound up with a rock and roll theme with The Ground Beneath Her Feet by Salman Rushdie and Gabriel's Gift by Hanif Kureishi.

The Ground Beneath Her Feet requires a little knowledge of classic rock and roll, otherwise you won't know if you are in the real world or the "otherworld." But a very enjoyable read -- especially on my Kindle where I could immediately check on some of the lesser known rock groups.

The Engineer of Human Souls by Josef Škvorecký (Czech) and A Hero of Our Time by Mikhail Lermontov (Russian). The Engineer was rather overlong, but quite good in parts. A Hero is a very old one, 1840, very good for its time.

I didn't really like it. I hated Zhivago and found everything very jumpy and confusing.

I liked Smiley's People by John le Carré much more than book one in the series.

message 6870: by Frances (new)

Frances (francesperez) | 32 comments Dracula. It was unnecessarily long. For an epistolary style of writing, the characters liked to write/journal a lot. ✍️

Finished the 4th and final volume of Monkey: The Journey to the West by Wu Cheng'en.

Congratulations on that--quite an accomplishment. I'd like to start on it myself, but I have a lot of inertia to overcome when it comes to multi-volume sets like that.

Thanks! This was the second time I read it - sort of. The first time I read the more popular version, which I later learned was abridged. I started this version back in February. It is actually a surprisingly easy read.

Colleen | 33 comments My most recently read are: Passing, Diary of a Nobody, and The Fox. I really enjoyed all of them. Both The Fox and Passing leave you thinking for a long time after. Diary of a Nobody feels like a Victorian blog...it was fun.

Of Love and Shadows by Isabel Allende.
I had previously read her other List book, House of the Spirits. Though they have a similarity of style, I liked this one more.

Have finished At Swim, Two Boys by Jamie O'Neill. Near four stars for me. If you're put off by relationships of gay men you might not want to read it; it has a lot more in it than that though.

message 6891: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 35 comments Finished A Town Like Alice and, while slow at times and dated in some ways, it was a really nice read. Overall uplifting.

It saddens me so much that such a disclaimer is still needed in 2020.

Mia | 1198 comments I finished The Circle by Dave Eggers. I think there was only one character in the whole book that I didn't dislike.

Eggers kind of beats you over the head and shoulders with his theme in that book, doesn't he? And yes, what a bunch of irritating people.

Have finished Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett which I read overlapping with the last one I posted about.
It's quite the wild story, rather too over-the-top for my taste, as there is no sense of parody to it. I did enjoy his use of old slang colloquialisms, some of which may have been original.
