My mum has bought me The Bone Season for my birthday (which isn't until December) and I'm super impatient to read it, but have to wait ;)

A dollar store is a place where you can buy things for a dollar. sometimes there are dollar stores where things are cheap, but often more than a dollar (I'm not sure why they are called dollar stores if not everything is a dollar but whatever) You can also find books there, but usually religious books or romance novels. So they sound similar.

Adam (amilesb) | 35 comments Dollar store - everything is a dollar (well not anymore but usually less than $5)
Sounds like Poundland is the same?
My favorite place to pick up a book would be a yard sale. They always look weathered but you can find some cool reads!

I've been on somewhat of a book buying binge of late. I think I buy about twice as many books as i actually read! Sometimes it's just too hard to resist a bargain.
So far this month I've bought Rivers of London, Hammerjack, Spin, House of Suns, Slaughterhouse-Five, Songs of the Dying Earth: Stories in Honour of Jack Vance, The Affirmation, R.U.R. & War with the Newts plus loads of non SF/F including 6 Elmore Leonard's, 6 Cormack McCarthy's, Lemmy's Autobiography, a nice Master and Commander dvd/book package and a few more too. I'll soon need a new house to keep them all in!

House of Suns is amaaaaaaaaazing! And I totally get about not being able to resist a bargain, haha. Charity shops are a blessing and a curse in that respect...

My last Kindle Store raid ended with four books in my shopping cart. Please welcome The Peculiar, Heartwood, Katya's World and Babylon Steel to my digital library.

So I suppose the most recent books I bought have been Elantris, Jack Glass and the Painted Man.

But also got Mortal Engines. Philip Reeve, Between Two Thorns, Dead Angels and The Alchemyst - the first 3 are signed :D

After I loved The Peculiar so much, I had to get the follow up volume as well.
I bought The Whatnot and to not buy just one book added Ascension: A Tangled Axon Novel to the shopping cart.

I was very active on the book buying front this month. As Jo Fletcher Books has a lot of their books on sale for the Kindle I bought and pre-ordered Knife Sworn, The Tower Broken, The Secret of the Nagas, Pilgrims, Shadow, World's End and Empress of the Sun.

For December I bought Season of Wonder to have a seasonal story every day.

And as I want to dip more into SF, I bought some interesting and some really weird and silly titles, like Fortune's Pawn, Ancillary Justice, Ack-Ack Macaque, Space Captain Smith and Arena Mode

And for almost nothing I supported a new author and bought his debut Riddle in Stone.

Lauren Prodigy, A Dance of Cloaks, and Tigana. A dance of cloaks will probably be next on my reading book list since I started it in the store and got pretty far into it. The other two might end up sitting for awhile until the mood strikes me that "this!" is the next book for me.

I have some very generous friends and have been belatedly bought:

Poseidon: Earth Shaker, Athena: Grey-Eyed Goddess, Hades: Lord of the Dead, Hera: The Goddess and her Glory, Zeus: King of the Gods

Smoke and Mirrors, Aesop's Fables (the Barnes and Noble Illustrated edition).

Also, S By J J Abrams - is a BEAUTIFUL concept. If you love the look and feel of books, and want a reading EXPERIENCE. Check it out.

Have been too busy with my own stuff to catch up on a HUGE list of to-reads that I have, I only have two other books on the go which is most unlike me! Looking to increase my Paul Hoffman collection too... but for now, A bit of Pratchett Raising Steam

Had a successful day out in St. Andrews yesterday, there's some really good charity shops there, including a books-only Barnardos, and I managed to get into a couple during a busy day. For starters, I picked up The Lies Of Locke Lamora as i'm pretty we'll be reading it next month, the text is so tiny though! Well timed find i thought! Also got Skagboys, Debatable Space, The Dirty Streets of Heaven and lastly, Lonesome Dove as i've been enjoying westerns recently. Not bad for £10.

Popped by to greet the parentals this weekend and found that mother had picked me up a copy of The Tiger in the Well which I haven't read in many years and don't own :)

Terrible Reviewer | 52 comments I found myself in UCL yesterday, so ended up popping into Goldsboro (as you do). Popping in, I made the decision to buy one book... Blood Song (Raven's Shadow, #1) by Anthony Ryan , popping out I ended up leaving with... Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) (Wool, #1-5) by Hugh Howey , Steelheart (Reckoners, #1) by Brandon Sanderson and The Path of Anger The Book and The Sword 1 (Le Livre et l'épée, #1) by Antoine Rouaud ...

... then went for a stiff drink when I saw the receipt.

Oh gosh, I'm not a big shopper either - unless it comes to books or geeky merchandise, so Forbidden Planet is perfect ;D In fact me and Freya went to one a few weeks ago!

I haven't read any of those, but have heard lots of good things about them.

I've read Steelheart and really enjoyed it... have you read any more of Sanderson's stuff? I Haven't read any of the others on your list there.

I love book shopping...entirely too much!!

Terrible Reviewer | 52 comments Heinous of you to taunt me like that Rinn. Forbidden Planet is a horrid place for my bank balance. What books/geeky toys did you purchase between you?

It's not what I would call a 'bargain' shop :S You should pop in anyway, it's like Santa's bookstore... for book lovers anyway. If you, I dunno, like axes and machetes as you do, then no ;-)

No sadly not. I took a gamble with Steelheart. I've heard of his Mistborn trilogy??

Are you having trouble fitting books in your house also? I've been told to invest in a Kindle, but I've grown accustomed to paper all to much... oh and papyrus (as you do lol).

It's a gamble. For some people it works out, for others not so much.
I completely switched to digital books a few years back and never regretted it. I like having my library on the go and the pure reading experience is just amazing.
The only real disadvantage is the loss of the awesome cover arts. I usually compensate by having a desktop background of the book I'm currently reading active on my PC.

You went to a Con, which one? I'm sooo out of touch living in Devon. It's all cider and "'rite my dear" seriously. Welcome to the Farm-Con... :P

I almost said before I don't buy any of merchandise or toys. I'd be a fibber though, as I just remembered how many Funko Pop Vinyls are in my parents loft *whistles to self*. Do you have a collection preference?

True. It's all subjective like you say. I've certainly thought about grabbing a eReader, but no. I've a plan to have a proper library one day. Silly dream. Your suggestion is by far the more sensibly route lol.

Completely agree. There's the question of dust though Kirsty. Real book problem there :D

It had that affect on me as well. They should hang a sign on the door stating "Chances of passing out are high due to pricing."

If you dare to look again, the 'coming soon' section are near enough the same price as say, Waterstones. Unless it's limited edition, around £24.99. I'd suggest moving any alcohol out of the room at the time... just in case!!

How very tidy they would look. Most people want a jacuzzi or a tea room, we want a library haha. I'd like to add a games room also.

Are you a tidy person with your books Freya? Categorised and in genre order?

I've some reclaimed Oak that I am turning into a mammoth book case. That's the plan. My wood work skills are... *coughs*

You sound like me. I had all intention to keep some orderly shelves, now I've a 'creative' Minecraft-style arrangement haha. When I get home to Kent, I'll take a photo of the, well, mess. Anyone would think I'd studied archaeology and not ancient history (we all know how you archie-types like to get messy now) :P
