Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs
Rating: ****
Read: 07/22/15

Review:
I love this world so much. I love the characters and I HATE Adam's ex-wife. I never cared for her before but, now that we've got to see her smarmy manipulative butt in action, I can truly say I hate her. Wanting someone to die because they pulled a prank on you, for acting like a brat btw, is so NOT okay. Especially when said person nearly did die and is still severely wounded.

Megabitch ex-wife aside (although I hope she moves to the Canary Islands, personally... I'm mostly kidding), I liked this one. I liked the new characters as well, especially Mercy's brother Gary Laughingdog. I can still say that Wulfe is still delightfully twisted and creepy although his role in this book is minimal.

Is it wrong that I'd like for the next book to be hospital trip free? Maybe the Pack and Jessie can go somewhere and have a vacation. Something relaxing without volcano gods trying to roast them? Maybe a rousing game of hide-and-seek with Coyote could have content enough for a book without having to worry about which of our beloved characters might not make it out alive.

I really like Mercy's world too! She is awesome and I especially liked the set down she gave Adam's ex in that one. She totally deserved it!

Lol, on the name thing. Are we gonna let the ninja's do it for us?

Thanks for captaining Thenia, I just don't have the time for the first month of the game. I have no idea on my book for this week, I will need to check my books and get back to you. Birthday went well, he's happy and I'm knackered. Hopefully I can get my review done tomorrow and we'll be good for our first stamp :)

It's been a couple of rounds since I've done it so I felt guilty and jumped in. Probably just confused things more than I meant to. Thanks for jumping in Thenia!

Since none of us seem to be really excited about the names we came up with and since the Ninjas are itchin' to name us, if the crew agrees I'd say let them! :D

A Kiss of Blood (Vamp City, #2) by Pamela Palmer A Kiss of Blood - Pamela Palmer - ★★★ (7/23/2015)

Review:

Quinn's story continues and so does her unhealthy attachment to her brother.

The two siblings are out of Vamp City, but leaving has apparently caused something to go wrong with Quinn's brother and once again, she's determined to do anything and everything she can to save him. That decision and the vampire who helped but also betrayed her, Arturo Mazza, lead them back to Vamp City and a race against time to learn how to use her sorceress powers to save that much hated city for her brother's sake.

Quinn is stubborn and ignorant, but unwavering, spending all of her time focused on her goal and not really caring about anyone but her brother.

You push away anyone who could possible care about you. Why is that

Arturo, who has come to care for her quite a bit, does everything he can to help her and gain back her trust.

Their adventure finally leads them to the moment they were working towards and her chance to use her powers and save Vamp City, but (view spoiler).

Their journey doesn't end here, but they now have another objective and more plans to make in the next book of the series Of Blood and Passion.

Blood of the Demon
Rating: ***
Blood of the Demon (Demons of Infernum, #1) by Rosalie Lario
Date Read: 07/24/2015

Review:

Keegan lives to exact revenge on the evil demon who sired and abused him. When his father devises a plan to bring on the apocalypse, he and his three half-brothers, interdimensional bounty hunters for the Elden Council, are charged with capturing and delivering their father for punishment.

Art gallery owner Brynn Meyers has no idea that her ability to read memories embedded in objects and drain people of their life force means she has demon ancestry. Unfortunately for Brynn, she's also the key to raising an ancient zombie army, which puts her on every demon's Most Wanted List.

First of all, I’ll get the negatives out of the way and try to stay mostly spoiler free.

1. Our heroine, Brynn, who besides being a special snowflake, is a touch TSTL. AND she finds it hard to believe that the dead grey guy with five eyes and a rhino horn where his nose should be is a demon. Really? I wanted to slap or throttle her quite a few times.
2. Holy Stockholm Syndrome Batman. Even after finding out that the hottie demon brothers were ultimately sent to kill her, she still follows the man who knocked her out and kidnapped her along like a walking hormone. because he’s hot and he’s obviously a good man (demon... whatever). Of course, it helps that she acknowledged that its ridiculous that she was attracted to her kidnapper but whatevs.
3. It hurt my brain to try and imagine the logistics of trying to fly while having sex.

Good things

1. I really liked the hottie demon brothers. They seem interesting and fun and I’ll probably give the next one a try.
2. The sex scenes were pretty steamy.
3. The book was a freebie. So win in that column.
4. I was never bored and the story kept me interested overall.

Read: 27/7/15
Rated: 5 Stars

My Review: Book 7 and I'm still loving the series, it's going from strength to strength and I am enjoying every single word.

I liked Ashwini in Angel's Pawn, but I loved getting to know her better in this one. Her secrets surprised me and I enjoyed catching up with everyone again.
I really like Janvier too and the two of them work well as a couple.

I truly think Naasir is going to be my favourite character in the whole series though. I am intrigued.

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 540 comments Of Silk and Steam (London Steampunk, #5) by Bec McMaster

Book: Of Silk and Steam by Bec McMaster
Shelf: A Bloody Mess
Rating: 4.5 stars
Date Finished: 7/26/15

First things first, blurb writer, maybe mention that the heroine is the Duchess of Cassavian, who has been showing up (like Leo) since the beginning of the series. Sheesh.

Secondly, it's going to be difficult to review this book without series spoilers. So fair warning...

I think this is the last of the series and I'm quite sad about that. I've enjoyed this dark, steampunky, vampire-y series since the beginning. It's fitting that it ends with these two characters since they've both been around in a mysterious are they allies or not sort of way since the start. If you haven't read this series, I would not recommend starting here, these characters have histories and there's an overarching plot that will be more meaningful if you have the past experience.

About the book itself? I'll be honest, I wasn't that invested in the romance. I love both Leo & Mina but I'm not a big fan of the enemies to lovers trope so it's a personal preference. Once they got past that and started working together I really loved them but their journey wasn't my favorite. It didn't really matter though, I was so caught up in the rest of the story, the political maneuverings and Leo & Mina's individual back stories that I couldn't really put the book down anyway. I read the last two hundred pages in a breathless rush, there was so much going on and the stakes were so high.

So, if I'm wrong and this is not the last one I'll be pretty excited because I think there are stories I'd still enjoy from this world. (view spoiler). But if it is the last I'll certainly be watching for whatever Bec McMaster has up her sleeve next.

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 540 comments Broken Soul (Jane Yellowrock, #8) by Faith Hunter

Book: Broken Soul by Faith Hunter
Shelf: Free Space (Group Bookshelf)
Rating: 3 stars
Date Finished: 7/31/15

I liked this book - I enjoy the Jane Yellowrock series in general. But I felt like it was a really slow read. I'm not sure if the issues was me (rough week at work) or the book. It did take a little while to get the plot moving, but there were some fun moments with Bruiser and the Youngers even before the main plot got going. Even though I enjoyed reading it I never felt completely wrapped up.

I think I also never really got a grip on the "light dragon" thing. It's a light being, but it's attached to the water (maybe?) shapeshifter, alligator, dragon, dog (I think at one point) and humanoid. I felt like all the explanations and description of their powers were a little "hand wavy" and vague until some was clarified at the end. I think that made it more difficult for me to lose myself in the story because I kept trying to wrap my head around it.

I started by saying I like the book because I did despite my frustrations with it. I always enjoy Jane & Beast interactions and the romance took a good turn (for me anyway - team Bruiser!). But this one isn't going to be a favorite in the series.

Read: 31/7/15
Rated: 4 Stars

My Review: I used to love this series, it was always one of they books that I stalked the postman for and devoured as soon as I had it in my hands. The last few books, whoever, just haven't gave me that same thrill. I still pre-order them but I have had this one since release day and this is me just getting to it. I did enjoy this one, I loved how the pack played a big part in the story. The additions of new characters and supes gave it a fresh feel. I'm still not sure on Mallory but I liked Ethan. I am looking forward to seeing how the plot continues with the new story arc being hinted at. I will continue with the series.

Uprooted by Naomi Novik Uprooted - Naomi Novik ~ ★★★★ (8/1/2015)

Review:

A somewhat original fantasy full of magic, a surly sorcerer and an evil forest.

Agnieszka gets unexpectedly picked by the "Dragon" to spend a decade in his castle, where her tiny little world gets a lot bigger, as she learns that (view spoiler) among other things.

She starts out mulish and defiant, unwilling to learn anything the Dragon teaches her, but when (view spoiler), and so her training begins in earnest, with her almost full cooperation.

Her love for her best friend Kasia leads her, with the Dragon's help, to achieve something thought impossible, and their actions lead to the notice of a selfish prince and their very reluctant participation in a life-threatening adventure in the Wood.

A fast-paced story with evidence of a beautiful female friendship, a strained, yet entertaining relationship between Agnieszka and the Dragon and an original and interesting adversary in the form of a corrupted, evil Wood, which (view spoiler).

Trees? Everywhere trees? What the hell is this place?

I would have like the romantic element to be a bit more pronounced, but that's just the romantic in me speaking. Apart from that, Uprooted was a very enjoyable story that kept me engaged throughout.

Trailer Park Fae
Trailer Park Fae (Gallow and Ragged, #1) by Lilith Saintcrow

Date Read: 08/03/2015
Rating: ***

Review: It was alright. Gallow is a pretty interesting character. He's only half fae and has been living a mortal existence. Ragged is a half fae as well but she has lived in Summer's Court since she was brought over to Fairy.

There's a plague infecting the full blooded fae and tons of fae politics and intrigue.

Full disclosure: I freaking hate the fae, actually I guess I'd say I find it boring. I love this author though and the cover the was intriguing enough I had to buy it.

I will likely not read the next in the series but I'm not inclined to dissuade anyone else from reading it. If I even remotely liked reading books about faeries, I probably would've enjoyed this. As it is, I'm not a huge fan of this one book but I still like Lillith Saintcrow.
