I loved it! I like Gothic fiction, so this was right up my alley. I didn't really know what to expect and the first chapters were a bit slow, but after that the story got better and better. At the end I got why the first chapters were written like that: (view spoiler). Daphne du Maurier has a beautiful way of describing things. This is easily one of my favorite books of the year.

I found it slow in parts too but I feel like (view spoiler) I thought it was a really smart story. I am glad you loved it.

@ Laura I think you meant to post this in the fourth quarter challenge. This is just an October challenge.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments 2. Colonel Mustard with the Wrench in the Study - The Traitor's Wife: A Novel of the Reign of Edward II by Susan Higginbotham. Impressively written and with a good historical background! Apart from the confusing repeated names and titles, which any author would have difficulty with, the story was entertaining and the historical characters made quite real. Definitely worth reading! 4 stars

2/3

I ended up listening to it as an audiobook because I also tried to read it years ago and didn't enjoy it. It was okay, but much easier to get through as an audiobook.

message 119: by SibylM (last edited Oct 19, 2013 09:40AM) (new)

SibylM (sibyldiane) | 223 comments I think I liked this challenge best of all the monthly challenges so far this year. Partly because it's so much fun and partly because I read some books I really loved. I have met my goal of five and added an extra because I decided to do one book for each character/color. I am consolidating the six I have done so far here -- if I read more, will do another post later in the month.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Emily M. Danforth

Reverend Green in the conservatory with a lead pipe (okay the cover here is probably technically aqua, but I decided aqua can go either way and I assigned it to green).

Seriously, I gave all of these books either four or five stars. I think my favorites were This Song Will Save Your Life and Love is a Mix Tape. Best run of excellent reading I've had all year.

I feel the same Karina. I loved this challenge but the books I read couldn't fit the criteria. I am going to try to read one more before the end of October. I also had to make sure all of my books fit my Every Year Challenge. It was more important. Good luck and let me know what you do read.

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Just a few days left everyone! Read, read, read away. I started a new book but I don't think I will be able to finish before the 31st. Good luck to you all.

Theresa~OctoberLace (octoberlace) | 773 comments Jodi, I just started The Shadow of the Pomegranate, which I hope to finish by midnight on Halloween. Assuming I do, that will be my 16th book read in October, but only 7 fit this challenge. Still, it's been fun. Thanks for leading!

message 146: by Jodi (new)

Jodi (readinbooks) | 1971 comments Wow! That is a lot of books to get through. I think I read 4 in October and am on my fifth but I don't think I will get through it. I have a killer headache right now and don't think I will get much reading done. I found it hard to find books that fit this challenge because I was also trying to fit them into my Every Year Challenge. It was a fun challenge though. I love Clue growing up.
