Some parts sound similar to Earthseed
. Did the children fight in this "game?" What were the scientist trying to achieve?
Sorry my questions are a little confusing. Any little details you remember may stand out to someone. So feel free to post them :)
They weren't meant to fight each other - but it happened, because they were teenagers. The scientists were actually trying to train the kids to live on the planet, in small sessions, which got longer and longer each time they went. On the first session they had to set up a house, next session try and find plants and wildlife. Basically it was free labor on a new planet.
Invitation to the Game
fits the description of the cover. And if it's that one--there have been many, many, MANY requests for help finding it. It seems to have really stuck in people's minds. (And yes, I did have to find a copy and read it, what can I say--I figure if it had that much impact, it was worth my time and effort, right?)

Colleen, I do think you're meshing two books. It does happen a lot. There's no ear clip or colored walls in Invitation to the Game. I read that just last week, for the same reason Ann did. Good book, esp. for the intended audience (though the cover is definitely misleading).
I agree with Cheryl, part of your description was definitely the book I posted. But part of it is another book entirely. Maybe This Place Has No Atmosphere (tho that cover seriously sucks, btw) for the other book?
Yes, Invitation to the Game is one - I thought I might be mushing two together... Should I mark this partially solved? haha
And I don't think it is "This Place Has No Atmosphere", since it was a book I read in middle school, which was about 20 years ago.
The earrings and colour changing walls for certain. And I think maybe the fighting part. The teens in Game didn't really fight, they argued a bit, but no fighting. So, I'm thinking that is from the second book.
Colleen, are you still looking for this? (Note: OP meshed two books, one has been solved, the other hasn't.)
Are you still looking for this?
Whispers from the Grave, by Leslie Rule has both those elements (MP3 ear chips and color change walls).https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5...
There is also a time-travel element where she goes back to the 1970s to stop a relative's murder.
The book is not available from my library, but I will say it sounds right. Feel free to mark it solved. Thanks everyone!

Colleen wrote: "Good news! I found it in my parent's basement! Yay free"Free is always good :) Hope it's as good as you remember. I recently re-read my old, old copy from a box of books I was going through to maybe donate (which is why I was able to answer the question) and it...well... it was written in the 1990s and the standards for YA Lit weren't as high as they were today. Also, my personal standards weren't as developed as they are now. Still, it was a good bit of fun to revisit.

I *think* this might be a book called something like "The Game" where teenagers are sent to another planet to terraform/repopulate (but the scientists convince them that it is only a game) BUT maybe I'm meshing together two books?
The cover for "The Game" at least had a 90's illustration of a girl with what looked like big silver ski goggles on, her hair blowing back
