Paula (pauldajo) I finished Shiver and I think I'll start on Poison Study tonight. This book has been in my TBR pile a long time. I really like the cover.

Paula, what did you think about Shiver? I am about 3/4 of the way thru and I am so bored with it. I feel like it is a story about regular teenagers as opposed to werewolves.

That's not good. I have Greywalker & I think the 2nd & 3rd books in the series.

ooooooh it sounds good. I just ordered it and put it on my tbr. is there a PNR type theme? i was trying to figure out where to shelve it.

message 1005: by Chichipio (new)

Chichipio Cherra, nope. Not PNR. Romance is not the focus of the series. In fact, in the first book, what little there is of it feels a bit forced. But, it triggers something good for the 2nd and 3rd books.

I don't know if you've read the Kitty Norville series, but they treat romance in the same fashion. This is one of the things that makes me like Greywalker even if the first book is not very good: Not that many authors can write their main characters into stable relationships and make a good job of it. Kat Richardson is one of them.

I'd shelve it under UF.

Paula (pauldajo) Cherra wrote: Paula, what did you think about Shiver?

I did't really think it was slow because I set my mind to romance mode. The book is mainly a relationship/love story. Truly a soul mate theme with a little paranormal. If I was in the UF frame of mind, I would have thought that the book was going at a snails pace. I can see how a lot of people consider Shiver slow, if they are looking for fast pace action. I like the universe, it's a bit different.Usually I don't usually like paranormal romances, but Shiver pleases me when I think of the two main characters. I do see a lot of holes in the surrounding story, though.

I read it a couple of years ago and didn't like it. It was really hard to finish. Have never bothered with any others in the series.

message 1008: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) After reading the discussions about Greywalker I'm certainly not going to read it . I have too many books in my TBR pile to buy an iffy book.

I got it from the library, thank goodness. Like others have said, interesting concept, debilitatingly slow pace.

Paula--I thought this was going to be something totally different. Lately, I have tried to avoid reading reviews before I read a book b/c it sometimes effects how I feel about the book. If I build it up too much in my mind, I am usually let down with the actual material. I was told by another GR friend that Shiver would be a great book for a teenage boy (and family) to listen to on a long car trip. First, my husband was like "what on earth are we listening to". Then my son didn't want to hurt my feelings so he said we could listen to it--when it became clear that everyone was bored, I turned it off. I am almost finished with the actual book and I have to say that my teenage boy would not have liked it--it is more girly. I didn't know it would be such a love story. If I was a teenage girl I might swoon over the romance as a 35 yr old woman, not so much.

A teenage boy? Really? I would never have said that. It's definitely a love story for mushy-hearted romantics.

Yeah, and when I read the part about them having sex--although it was not detailed at all--all I could think about how uncomfortable 'we' (teenager and the parentals) would have been have been stuck in a car hearing about 2 teenagers getting it on. Soooo glad we turned it off.

message 1014: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the Harry Dresden series, Simon R. Green or Christopher Moore. Those are things to suggest for teenage boys. Shiver? I haven't even read it and I would think it would be a no-no!

message 1015: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Maybe not Moore. He curses.

:)

I ♥ Bookie Nookie (bookienookiereviews.blogspot.com) (ibookienookie) Uh... definitely not Shiver (and yes, I am a moron for thinking it was a good one).

I just saw werewolves and he loves werewolves so I was sold. He also read Twilight and New Moon and liked them--Shiver is really nothing like those 2. I was looking for the Harry Dresden audio version but couldn't find it in time. Luckily we dont have any car trips planned anytime soon so we are good. Hubby says next time he picks it out and it will be a James Patterson audio. Yeah, Yeah...my choice sucked!

Actually not so unfortunately! I thought the show was AWFUL!! About the only thing it had in common with the books was the guys name was Harry Dresden and he was a wizard. My husband liked it, but then he never read the books.

Anne I finished [image error] today. I really enjoyed it, but it ending left me wanting something more. I thought it was a stand-alone novel, but now I'm kind of wondering if there is a second book in the works. To be honest, I was hoping it wasn't a series. Occasionally I'd like to read a book with a beginning, middle, and end. A real end.

Speaking of reading a series, I'm starting The Awakening (Darkest Powers, #2) by Kelley Armstrong . I'm only a few pages into it, and already I'm enjoying it!

Dog Days (Dog Days, #1) by John Levitt A Kiss Before the Apocalypse (Remy Chandler, #1) by Thomas E. Sniegoski

But then, I liked Shiver, though I'd *never* recommend it for a teenage boy. How about The Graveyard Book. The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

I personally loved it, and I think it's a big favorite around here. I don't know how far in you are, but I'd give it a good bit. It really is an interesting, exciting book with wonderful world-building and characters.

It's one of those books that either you like...or you don't. It was originally going to be a pilot for a tv show, but it didn't get picked up, so they turned it into a book. At least, I think that's the story. Maybe that's why it feels sort of weird when you read it. I enjoyed it, but I didn't LOVE it. Gaiman is one of my favorites, so it's hard for me not to like his stuff. Neverwhere is not the best representative of his writing, though. Speaking of Gaiman, I just finished Batman Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader? by Neil Gaiman . Loved it!

Julia | 615 comments I loved Neverwhere, Kristie. Please keep reading for awhile yet.
And Anne, it was made into a tv movie/ pilot or something for British tv. It's supposed to be amazing.
