Paula, what did you think about Shiver? I am about 3/4 of the way thru and I am so bored with it. I feel like it is a story about regular teenagers as opposed to werewolves.

Did anyone else have trouble getting into this book? This is my second time around with this book and I still can't seem to get into it. M..."
That's not good. I have Greywalker & I think the 2nd & 3rd books in the series.

ooooooh it sounds good. I just ordered it and put it on my tbr. is there a PNR type theme? i was trying to figure out where to shelve it.

I don't know if you've read the Kitty Norville series, but they treat romance in the same fashion. This is one of the things that makes me like Greywalker even if the first book is not very good: Not that many authors can write their main characters into stable relationships and make a good job of it. Kat Richardson is one of them.
I'd shelve it under UF.

I did't really think it was slow because I set my mind to romance mode. The book is mainly a relationship/love story. Truly a soul mate theme with a little paranormal. If I was in the UF frame of mind, I would have thought that the book was going at a snails pace. I can see how a lot of people consider Shiver slow, if they are looking for fast pace action. I like the universe, it's a bit different.Usually I don't usually like paranormal romances, but Shiver pleases me when I think of the two main characters. I do see a lot of holes in the surrounding story, though.

I read it a couple of years ago and didn't like it. It was really hard to finish. Have never bothered with any others in the series.

I got it from the library, thank goodness. Like others have said, interesting concept, debilitatingly slow pace.

I agree. I am going to skip it too.

Paula--I thought this was going to be something totally different. Lately, I have tried to avoid reading reviews before I read a book b/c it sometimes effects how I feel about the book. If I build it up too much in my mind, I am usually let down with the actual material. I was told by another GR friend that Shiver would be a great book for a teenage boy (and family) to listen to on a long car trip. First, my husband was like "what on earth are we listening to". Then my son didn't want to hurt my feelings so he said we could listen to it--when it became clear that everyone was bored, I turned it off. I am almost finished with the actual book and I have to say that my teenage boy would not have liked it--it is more girly. I didn't know it would be such a love story. If I was a teenage girl I might swoon over the romance as a 35 yr old woman, not so much.

A teenage boy? Really? I would never have said that. It's definitely a love story for mushy-hearted romantics.

Yeah, and when I read the part about them having sex--although it was not detailed at all--all I could think about how uncomfortable 'we' (teenager and the parentals) would have been have been stuck in a car hearing about 2 teenagers getting it on. Soooo glad we turned it off.

I just saw werewolves and he loves werewolves so I was sold. He also read Twilight and New Moon and liked them--Shiver is really nothing like those 2. I was looking for the Harry Dresden audio version but couldn't find it in time. Luckily we dont have any car trips planned anytime soon so we are good. Hubby says next time he picks it out and it will be a James Patterson audio. Yeah, Yeah...my choice sucked!

..which one were you looking for? Storm front?

oh awesome! thanks! I will check it out. I didn't know there was a series--what network?

Actually not so unfortunately! I thought the show was AWFUL!! About the only thing it had in common with the books was the guys name was Harry Dresden and he was a wizard. My husband liked it, but then he never read the books.

OMG Cherra, this made me LOL. :)

thinking about what might have been has a similar effect on me:-)

Speaking of reading a series, I'm starting

The darkest powers series reminds me of a teen version of x-men. So good.

But then, I liked Shiver, though I'd *never* recommend it for a teenage boy. How about The Graveyard Book.

thanks, that looks good...

Ok, so it IS a series. Good to know! Thanks, Cherra!

No, no Anne, sorry--I wasn't clear. I am not sure about Beautiful Creatures. I was referring to the Darkest Powers series by Kelly Armstrong--reminding me of a teen xmen.

I love to read true stories about people beating the odds with medical conditions like asperger's, tourettes, etc... I read "Look me in the Eye" --it was very good and enlightening.

Glad to hear BEAUTIFUL CREATURES is good. I just got it the other day because the synopsis sounded interesting.

I personally loved it, and I think it's a big favorite around here. I don't know how far in you are, but I'd give it a good bit. It really is an interesting, exciting book with wonderful world-building and characters.

It's one of those books that either you like...or you don't. It was originally going to be a pilot for a tv show, but it didn't get picked up, so they turned it into a book. At least, I think that's the story. Maybe that's why it feels sort of weird when you read it. I enjoyed it, but I didn't LOVE it. Gaiman is one of my favorites, so it's hard for me not to like his stuff. Neverwhere is not the best representative of his writing, though. Speaking of Gaiman, I just finished
