Jessica, how do you like Tempting Danger? I love that series, but I've heard other people say they really don't like it.I am reading Carpe Corpus by Rachel Caine. I'm also listening to The Society of S in my car on my way to/from work and I am listening to Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire at work on my iPod.
I'm new to this group and Urban fantasy as a whole. Usually I am a strict, epic fantasy reader but I find good books in that genre to be few and far between. I wanted something satisfying, without having to wait hundreds of pages, but something I could really sink my teeth into.My best friend is a huge Butcher fan, and I had read Storm Front a couple of years ago. When I said I needed something new to read, he said to pick up Butcher again.
So right now, I'm reading:
Fool Moon. Frankly, I love it. I've heard a lot of people say it's their least favorite of the series and I'm sure I'll see why later. Right now, I'm completely absorbed. I wanted to go to bed early last night, but Butcher wouldn't let me. I read fifty pages when all I wanted to read is twenty.I was reading Bitten by Kelley Armstrong before that, but I really hated it. I really am not a fan of Paranormal Romance and I didn't like her writing style.
I plan up picking up some Patricia Briggs soon, too. :D
I'm only on chapter 4 right now, so we'll see. There was a short story in one of the anthologies I have that introduced me to the series, so I'm going to give it a chance since I enjoyed the short story. As for Butcher- READ IT!! I always felt Storm Front (while a great story) was the weakest of the books. Fool Moon was good, and all the Dresden books are fantastic with a fast pace, lots of magic & supe variety etc.
I agree with Jessica, Storm Front is good, but not as good as the books that follow it. I can't remember which book Thomas is introduced in (#3 maybe?), but I think that's when the series really took off, for me anyway. I've read all of the Dresden books and they are great! I think saying they are action-packed is an understatement. It was always really hard for me to put them down and go to sleep at night.

If a friend hadn't insisted I try the next one I would have missed out on some great reading!
LOL! Yes! I think the Dresden Files get better with each book. I was so glad when he finally stopped explaining stuff for new readers, like how the Blue Beetle got it's name.
I just finished At Grave's End and loved it. Literally minutes after finishing that I started Jessica's Guide to Dating on the Dark Side...so far so good. A little too Teeny bopper for me I'm okay with that. Easy to read. However I do have another eight books from the library that I need to read so if this one doesn't pick up soon I will be changing to one of the newer books. lol

and I LOVED it! I fully did not expect to because it started out a bit slowly, but not too far into it, it just grabbed me. I've rated it as one of the best I've read this year. Which surprised me! I found Lucius to be a a truly fascinating character and just fell in love with him. This from a woman who is more than 3 times the age this book is aimed at!

Did you think that the ending seemed a little darker than the rest of the story? I liked the ending, but the characters seemed to be much more serious in the final 50 pages.
Anne wrote: "I loved that book, too! Did you think that the ending seemed a little darker than the rest of the story? From what happened with the uncles when they showed up, to what happened in the barn toward the end (don't want to give away any spoilers!) and then the last 50 or so pages. I don't keep all that many books anymore after purging a lot of what I had these last few years, but this book is a keeper!
I agree. It suprised me, but in a good way. My favorite parts of the book were the letters he wrote to his uncle at the beginning. I laughed out loud a few times!
There were many times I laughed out loud in this book. I guess I'm more into the darker stuff so I enjoyed the end of the book. Good stuff.

I'm roughly halfway through now, and while I like the world & the characters are intrigueing, the writer's style feels heavy or slow or something. I will finish, but unless it picks up I don't think I'll be reading the rest.

Anne, I liked Fledglinga lot. I am a huge Anita Blake fan...especially when she's in her kick-a$$ mode. My favorite male lead is the Harry Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. Dark and hysterical! ENJOY!

is great!! Had me laughing several times!

I've read the first 2, I felt the same as you at first Jessica, but I'm glad I read the second one, it grabbed me more than the first and I do want to continue the series... it's on the list, just have to fit it in ;)
I have Strange Brew on my hold list at my library. Still about 40 peeps away tho. Hopefully I'll get it soon! I can't wait to read it!!!
Thanks for the recommendations! I think I've heard of Strange Brew and Fledgling. I'll have to check them out!
Anne, if you like dark books, try Adrian Pheonix. A Rush of Wings is book one. And since you like Dresden, try his darker counterpart Private Eye John Taylor in Simon R. Green's The Nightside series.
I've read the Adrian Pheonix books...definately on the dark side. I'll have to check out the Nightside series, though. I've never heard of that one. Thanks!

Oh, I LOVE the Nightside books!! Great characters!
Green's nightside can seem kinda cliched. I know the first time I read it, I heard the old detective music in my head HAHA. But they are dark, and entertaining and the characters and world are very cool.
Seems everything Green does is a little on the parody side, so I was fine with the cliché aspect. One of the reviews on the cover says "Cross the X-Files with the Twilight Zone, add a punch of The Outer Limits and a dash of Eerie, Indiana, and one might have a glimmer of an idea what the Nightside is like."
You guys are killing me! I can't check out anything new from the library until we get back from our vacation! I can't wait to read these!
I just finishedSkinwalker A Jane Yellowrock Novel. This book was different. I truly enjoyed it. The characters are built up as you go and each time you see them you learn more about them. There is very little back information, except memories that Jane has, so that leaves a few things unclear. When Jane shifts into "The Beast" the dialoge is written from the cat's perspective. It was definitely a refreshing change and truly funny in some parts, but I can see where that dialouge would not appeal to some people. I am looking forward to the next book

I finished the book over the weekend and it was one of the better stories in the book.
I just finished Hunting Ground by Patricia Briggs (AMAZING) Now I'm reading Dark Time: Mortal Path, book 1 by Dakota Banks.

It is but as a reviewer, I sometimes get ARC's. :)

But honestly, it doesn't happen a lot. I just got lucky this time. :)
Michelle M. wrote: "Well, fair play to you. Much jealousy wafting your way though. :)"Well, I'm sure that if you liked Cry Wolf, you will definitely love Hunting Ground. :)
Lol, the funny thing is, I'm jealous, yet I haven't even gotten up to that series yet! They're on the TBR, but right now I'm jealous on principle!:)

Oh, I thought you had read Cry Wolf! Well, when you do get to it, hope you like it! And I'm sure by that time, Hunting Ground will be out.
