Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I hadn't noticed either! But it's funny, as soon as I read this, I could hear the lyrics in my head perfectly.

Tori seems to be friends with everyone cool!

Thanks for sharing Teresa. I sure hope you get to read some of his books this time! :)

Andreea (magicb) | 0 comments I am in! I love Neil Gaiman but I haven't read all of his works yet and I am really excited to do it with you, guys!!

message 104: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Teresa, what an excellent share; thank you. One of the most "human" posts I have ever read on Goodreads, if that makes any sense :-) (Another one was the Stardust wedding, also in this thread. You gals/guys are awesome)

This is so sappy, but that's a big part of what I love about Neil Gaiman's works. I always feel more human when I read his stories - he'll write something and a light just goes off in my heart like, "Yes! Those are the words to write for what I was feeling! That's how you say it!" He does that more frequently than any other writer for me.

Sabrina (sabrahb) | 2 comments I'd like to join. My 2013 goal is to read lots of Gaiman so I've read some already. Coraline here I come.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Aw, thank you, Cathie! That means a lot to me. :)

I admit that throughout my life, some of my reading has been influenced by favorite musicians. I love music and books so at times, the two merge. My love of Metallica when I was younger is why I read Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo in my early 20s. They wrote a song about the book and I thought it sounded very unique so I had to check it out and I now consider that to be one of the best books I have ever read.

Sap is always welcome, AM. :) I can be quite sappy when the mood strikes.

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo added to my TBR. Loved Metallica in my heyday. Thanks Teresa.

Cool, Cathie! Not sure if you knew this already or not, but the song they wrote that was inspired by the book is, "One." They even used clips from the movie (which I rented back then, since I was such a Metallica fangirl) in their video for it. And that was their first ever video.

message 110: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I know that video well :-). I was so much more into rockin with music and getting stoned back then that I never paid much attention to any books that any group were referencing ;-) I'm more sedate now and the brain cells I didn't fry eagerly want to scoop up all the good reads I missed reference to back then, lol

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Haha! Well, I've been a goody-goody my entire life and a nerd to boot, so yep, I noticed those things when I would read articles with my favorite musicians. "Oh, so and so liked that book? Gotta check it out!" hehehe.

message 112: by Cathie (new)

Cathie (catitude) | 999 comments I'm a goody-goody and a nerd now; took me awhile to figure things out, lol

message 113: by Christy (new)

I loved Metallica too... I'll have to check it out.

Some Kind of Monster was such an interesting doco. I've watched it a few times as it is a fascinating look at the relationships between humans, let alone a unique look at the band :)

@Sabrina - welcome!

message 115: by Christy (new)

Christy So are we are going to use the BOM threads for the first two months and then go off on our own? Just trying to make sure I understand.

message 118: by Christy (new)

Christy Got it. :) I saw there were two links already.

message 119: by Eleri (new)

Eleri ashamed to say I've never read any although I've had a few lying around waiting. coincidently I've been looking into his work to see where to start - perfect opportunity! (:

message 120: by Sara (new)

Sara (ssaradd) I think I may participate, despite having read many of his books. It will be nice to have people to talk to about them.

The Graveyard Book was October's original pick, but TOATETL was voted October's BOTM so they swapped places. I imagine the list will be updated once the BOTM thread is created/Karen gets around to adding it :)

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments Just found this, and it made me so happy:

Correct! Thanks AM :)

message 126: by Corey (new)

Corey (coreyhuffman) | 389 comments I think I will partake in this as well. I have Neverwhere waiting for me at the Library, so I am a quite a few months ahead of schedule for that one, and I just decided to read Coraline (which is how I found this thread) for the September BOM. I am looking forward to reading Stardust (yes, I watched the Movie, and liked it) and American Gods.

I too am a NG n00b, so this seems like a great way to get into his work.

The Graveyard book just was too perfect a fit for October.

message 129: by SiMo (new)

SiMo (simo_biblionauta) I'm in! I've never read anything by Neil Gaiman but I'm very curious about his books. I have Coraline in my ebook reader and The Graveyard Book and Stardust in my library.

Discussion thread is here
Coraline by Neil Gaiman

message 136: by Chris (new)

Chris (chrisfair) I found this thread through the Coraline BotM discussion and am so glad I did! I've read a few of these already, but would love to read them again and I see a few on the list that I've been meaning to read, too.

I read American Gods when it was first in paperback but it didn't leave any impression on me then and I didn't retain much of it. Later, I saw and absolutely loved the movie Stardust and noticed it was also by Neil Gaiman. I guess that's what put him on my radar because it wasn't until after that that I realized he's kind of a big deal. A few years ago, I read The Graveyard Book for book club and then InterWorld on my own and finally became a NG fan!

message 137: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Hey, can I get a start date for The Ocean at the End of the Lane so I know when I grab it from the library? As you can imagine, it's pretty popular book ;)

message 138: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments Hi Nicole - It looks like it is set for October 15. Link is here:

message 139: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Fantastic. These middle of the month monthly reads do confuse me sometimes.

message 140: by Kristie (new)

Kristie | 3595 comments I've been looking through my library to see which of these books they carry on audio and I realized that Neil Gaiman does not narrate all his books. I'm so disappointed by this! American Gods, Good Omens, and Anansi Boys (at least) are narrated by other people. I think I was spoiled by having him narrate the first couple books. I hope that I like them just as much. Has anyone listened to these on audio yet? What did you think of the narration?

message 141: by Karen ⊰✿, Fiction Aficionado (new)

Karen ⊰✿ | 16602 comments Mod
Thanks Kristie :)

and oh - I didn't know he didn't narrate those ones (maybe as they are bigger books? lol!). I haven't listened to any of them yet

message 142: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments I absolutely love Neil Gaiman's voice. It shocks me that I haven't gone for listening to one of his books by him yet.

Has everyone heard his keynote speech for 2012?

Ashley Marie (darlingdoor) | 1733 comments It's so good! They designed an art book with the text from it that is really nice: Make Good Art by Neil Gaiman

message 147: by Nicole (new)

Nicole Field (nicolefield) | 1778 comments Oh wow, that is pretty much the best resource yet.

For anyone whose interested in watching the speech, and also seeing his wife Amanda Palmer paraphrasing the quote in one of her songs, http://nicole-d-fergusson.blogspot.co...
