What did you think about the Golem and the Jenni

I read this book over a month ago, and still it is in my head. There is so much to discuss, Free will, immigration, living conditions, syrian-Jewish relations.

The imagery was lush and Jewish story telling is wonderful. Tell me what you thought?

Really liked it until it turned out to be just another romance story hoped for so much more for both characters I think the writer cheated us out of a good ending
Too bad because she wrote so well

Claire I really liked this book. Sad that it is not lendable as both my sister and my daughter would like it. I think the author has a new book. I hope so

Some recommendations for Kim:

Anything by Angela Carter, especially Nights at the Circus.
The Gargoyle
Company Of Liars
Anything by Sarah Addison Allen, especially Garden Spells

My thoughts were close to Tasula's--I loved Night Circus and still haven't found anything quite like it. (Recommendations appreciated.) But Golem and Jinni was still a really interesting book with memorable characters, great re-imagining of mythical figures, and rich descriptions of its setting: historical New York City.

This is such a great story (Jewish or not!)! I loved reading it right from the start and was sad when it came to the end (I hope Wecker writes a sequel!). It was a long story, over 500 pages, but was not a chore at any part. Very well written and very entertaining. My one tiny complaint (and not enough to bring down the rank) is that when the story jumps back in time, there is no notice and as the reader, it confused me for a few minutes each time.

I LOVED this book. I found it compelling, even with its leisurely pace. Chava and Ahmad's connection to each other was beautifully written and felt so genuine. The description of the immigrant experience and the questions of identity and humanity were handled extremely well. On a purely fantasy level, the use of a golem and a jinni was interesting and a lovely look into folklore not often explored in contemporary fiction. I know this discussion is old, but I had to tell somebody about my love for this book. I hope Helene Wrecker writes another novel! Quickly!

I enjoyed it, although I have a feeling it might have lost a bit of its charm in translation (I read the Polish version). The story was gripping, though, and I'm really looking forward to the next book.

I found the pacing slow, but in a good way. It felt epic, what with the setting, and a growing sense of tension that built with each chapter. I found it solid and so carefully set between characters and scenes. Also, the hardback book itself is beautifully produced.

It was a great story and it was beautifully written. I really liked how she built the bond between Ahmad and Chava. I would have liked to see more romance between them like the dance they attended. I really became attached to the characters and hated that two good and innocent characters died. I wanted more happy endings I guess. I gave it 4 stars.

I loved the background stories for the characters and the juxtaposition of their natures.

Loved it. New fresh and different.

I was very excited to read this book at first. But found this book to be too slow-paced for me. I really liked the characters and their backgrounds, but it just took too long to pick up. I only made it to Chapter 5 and gave up.

I saw this on the new books shelf at the library and was drawn in and mesmerized by the front cover. I didn't even read the inside flap because I decided a book with such a beautiful cover couldn't help but be a beautiful story. And I wasn't wrong! I loved this book, 5 stars from me.

I just finished it last night! I have to say, it's one of the best books that I have read in a long time!

I actually read the night circus first and then I read this one right after and they were both fantastic reads ^.^ I'm already sick of reading the same sappy YA novels and these two books just proved that there are many amazing authors out there that honestly need to be recognized more :D

The characters & story line made this one of my 2013 favorites.

I enjoyed this book, although for me it was not reminiscent of the Night Circus, which I thought was a totally fascinating ride. The Golem and the Jinni was more straightforward, at times I thought it bogged down with details, but overall 4 stars and many memorable characters (both likeable and not). Also realistic in its portrayal of the immigrants' lives, both their tribulations and their hard work in creating better lives for themselves and their families.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought of comparing this book to The Night Circus, which I also loved for its imagination and elegance of language!

I wasn't sure this was going to be my kind of book, but I loved it. The storytelling, the descriptons, and the way the Golem and the Djinni illuminated human characteristics ...

I loved it and am busy recommending it to everyone who liked The Night Circus and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. The same kind of magic literally and figuratively.

For me, reading this book was like taking a sail down a slow, winding, scenic river. You never knew what was around the next corner or where the river is going to take you, but you really enjoy the ride and all that you come across on the trip. This book is a wonderful read. The interactions of the immigrant humans with other humans as well as with the Golem's and Jinni's interactions with each other and how they try to fit in with the humans is part of what makes this story so enjoyable. All of the characters and scenes are so well described you really can see yourself being there. I gave it 4-stars.
