If remade into another movie, heaven forbid, who do you think would play Rhett Butler?

They would be. I can see the lowered forehead looks Clooney would give her. Great mix.

message 202: by [deleted user] (new)

I want to see Queen Latifah as Mammy, though. Imagine her power in that role. Baby, baby. She would knock it cold and there wouldn't be a stereotype left standing.

message 203: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Who would play Melanie and Ashley Wilkes?

message 204: by emily (new) - rated it 5 stars

emily This is impossible. Clark Gable and no one else can play Rhett. :D

message 205: by [deleted user] (new)

Ashley, hmmm. Ashley who wouldn't eat his cake, but couldn't help but stick his finger in the frosting when he thought no one was looking? Hmm. Matt Damon. Or Meryl Streep.

Melanie? Melanie I've always admired. "Look, here's our darling Scarlett." Wow. Very difficult. Cissy Spacek.

message 206: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria I've always disliked Ashley - such a wimpy type - surprised a strong, spunky woman like Scarlett wanted anything to do with him. Probably only because she couldn't have him.

And Melanie - she was just too loyal to Scarlett to be believable - they are both so weak - not sure who would be good to play them.

Nance Samantha wrote: "Eww, not George Clooney. He can be Ashley. (haha!)

How about Robert Downey Jr.? We've all seen how smooth and cocky he can be in the Iron Man movies."

Yes, yes and yes! Robert would be the perfect fit for Rhett! With his cocky and know-it-all attitude! Every time I think of Scarlett, she just reminds me so much of Susan Lucci. Now, who is a younger version of Susan Lucci? Maybe Mila Kunis? I'm not sure...

message 208: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Oh wow, yes, Robert Downey, Jr. over George Clooney as Rhett all day long! But I can't see George playing Ashley....

Susan Lucci would be good as far as looks - but she is a horrible actress (at least I think so)- thought provoking....

Well she's a bit too old anyway...lol! But, I just remembered her character as "Erica" on All My Children as being strong and thinking all the guys loved her, which is somewhat similar to Scarlett. You know with that feisty and spoiled attitude....

And, I think that Jude Law would make a great Ashley since he and Robert acted together in the Sherlock Holmes movies!

message 210: by Sarah (new) - rated it 1 star

Sarah That movie was sooo bad. Gerard Butler would be good but nothing would convince me to sit through the movie again

message 211: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana Clive Owen for sure!

message 212: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna I like Orlando Bloom as Rhett and Ryan Gosling as Ashley

message 213: by Hazel (new) - rated it 5 stars

Hazel McNellis Richard Armitage would be awesome (although there's no actor who could be better than Clark Gable in that role). I saw him in "North and South" and since then I love him! ;)
In my opinion, he's perfect as Rhett Butler. :)

message 214: by Renee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Renee Natalie Dormer as Scarlett

message 215: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana Channing Tatum?

Renee E Hmmm . . . maybe Anson Mount.

But I still lean toward Nathan Fillion.

Reading Harbor Ayny wrote: "Hugh Jackman?"

Hugh is a tremendous actor! But Rhett Butler is supposed to be a southern gentleman. Cocky and self-assured.

I would envision more of a swagger type: Henry Cavill (Superman) or someone like that. Maybe that guy on Forever. Can't remember his name.

message 218: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin O'Riordan They should never make the movie again, because the racism is nauseating. But if they did, they should make it racebent, with Idris Elba as Rhett and Kerry Washington as Scarlett. I would pay good American money to see that.

Renee E You're right, Erin, that it would be extremely difficult to remake it as it was written, even though it should be remembered that the racial issues were of the time in which the story is set.

But they sure as hell would have to change up the way Prissy and "Mammy" especially were portrayed.

Kathleen Alexander I really do not think anyone should remake Gobe With the Wind. But if someone did...what about Edward Norton as Rhett Butler? I think he could pull it off.

message 221: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna Ellen wrote: "They would be. I can see the lowered forehead looks Clooney would give her. Great mix."

Of course you can never do a remake. But Queen Latifah would rock Mammy! I never weighed in on Scarlett- young, immature, beautiful, smart. Selena Gomez with green contacts

message 222: by Donna (new) - rated it 5 stars

Donna Nobody likes Orlando. OK How about Patrick Warbuton as Rhett. lol but it might work!

message 224: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana They wouldn't have to change how Mammy was portrayed! She was Scarlett's rock!

message 225: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Erin wrote: "They should never make the movie again, because the racism is nauseating. But if they did, they should make it racebent, with Idris Elba as Rhett and Kerry Washington as Scarlett. I would pay good ..."

I knew this would come up. It's not racism, it's history. You can't erase it or pretend it never happened. To portray Mammy and Prissy any differently would be a travesty, because that's exactly how they would have been back then.

Don't let the race issue make us "change" history.

message 226: by Renee E (last edited Sep 11, 2014 08:41AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Renee E I think you're right . . . somewhat, Maria. There was a lot of campiness in the portrayals that really was caricature, especially Prissy. That would have to go.

I think whoever said Queen Latifah could rock the part of Mammy was spot-on.

message 227: by Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* (last edited Sep 11, 2014 09:03AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Brittain *Needs a Nap and a Drink* While I agree that race and that discussion is part of history, we cannot pretend that there wouldn't be protests and people upset over remaking this movie.

I believe that most of the actor combinations that we think of would have too little of an age gap to work. I mean, Rhett is much older than Scarlett. It would need to be something in the range of Jude Law and Anna Kendrick.

message 228: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria How about Oprah Winfree as Mammy and Jennifer Hudson as Prissy. I don't think either one would have a problem playing them in a historically accurate fashion.

Oprah did a fantastic job in The Color Purple.

Jennifer Hudson is too much of a presence to be Prissy. You have to have a certain sense of absentmindedness and frivolity of play Prissy and I don't see that in her. She is too smart and serious.

Renee E Or Whoopi for Mammy.

message 231: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Brittain - agreed, Prissy is a frivolous, absent-minded character, but I don't think we would need an actress like that to play the part. Just a good actress. I think Jennifer could do it - she seems to have a good range of emotions.

How about the actress who played the character in The Help who made the "pie"? Can't think of her name but she would be good as either of them.

message 232: by Erin (new) - rated it 5 stars

Erin O'Riordan It's not history, it's fiction, and it was written in the 1930s. It's not some journalistic account of the Civil War era. I enjoy this book (Scarlett's character especially), and I could hardly put it down, but you must admit that Mitchell idealized the Old South. Yet I doubt the daughters of slaves recalled those days as fondly as the daughters of slavemasters did. And I say this as a white American. I can only imagine the difficulty of reading this book for a person of color.

But I didn't mean to get us off topic. I just wanted to make an interesting suggestion for Rhett.

message 233: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana Prissy was a very young girl, so the casting choice could be Qwevenzhane Wallis. Mammy held it together for everyone, they were cut adrift when she died. Rhett Butler respected Mammy immensely.

Alison Ellen wrote: "Adam Sadler. Bette Midler as Scarlett."

Bette Midler as Belle Watling....

message 235: by Joyce (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joyce Sofia Vergara as Belle

Ashmeet I'm surprised that no one thought of Leonardo DiCaprio for Rhett

message 237: by Joyce (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joyce Yes, of course... Leo! Great choice.

message 238: by Alison (new) - rated it 5 stars

Alison Ashmeet wrote: "I'm surprised that no one thought of Leonardo DiCaprio for Rhett"

I was actually thinking of him for Ashley... Anson Mount as Rhett, Keira Knightly as Scarlett, and Carey Mulligan as Melanie.

Reading Harbor Actually, the more I think about it. They should cast an unknown. Too many actors as talented as they are keep getting re-hashed into new roles. I would like to see an actor/actress cast because of his/her ability not because of his/her fame.

message 240: by Karen (new) - rated it 5 stars

Karen Trixie wrote: "Angelina would rock as Scarlett."

Oh no she would not...not a Jolie fan.

IMHO there is no one who could play either Scarlett or Rhett. They are gone with the wind...

AliJ Ellen wrote: "Ashley, hmmm. Ashley who wouldn't eat his cake, but couldn't help but stick his finger in the frosting when he thought no one was looking? Hmm. Matt Damon. Or Meryl Streep.

Do you realize Cissy Spacek is 65 years old?

message 242: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Leo would make a good Ashley because he is definitely wimpy. Angelina Jolie is a big joke, it would be an insult for her to even think about playing Scarlett. Eww.

message 243: by Joyce (new) - rated it 5 stars

Joyce NO NO NO, Leo would not make a good Ashley. Rhett!!!

Lisa Trixie wrote: "I'd like to see Brad Pitt - he's older and would fit the role well. (I adore Hugh, but cannot see him as Rhett.)"

Thank you... no Hugh Jackman; the accent is most definitely not southern.

Lisa No.. don't remake it. It would be a pointless endeavor as it's already been done magnificently. Why redo it?

message 247: by Maria (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maria Ha! Well, whichever of us makes the movie can cast Leo accordingly. :) But I still wouldn't even let Angelina even read for the part of Scarlett! Sacrilege!!!

message 248: by Dana (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dana No I don't want a remake either. No point in touching perfection.

Renee E Maria wrote: "Ha! Well, whichever of us makes the movie can cast Leo accordingly. :) But I still wouldn't even let Angelina even read for the part of Scarlett! Sacrilege!!!"

Nah, I'd let her read.

Then tell her Jennifer Anniston was getting the part.

Justine Who ever suggested Michael Fassbender and Richard Armitage as Rhett, I agree. They both could radiate Rhett's interesting combination of hyper-masculinity and almost catty cruelty.

As for Scarlett, I want to see Tatiana Maslany in that role. She could emphasize just how much of a brat Scarlett can be while also showing why she seems occasionally sympathetic.
