Well, I might just have to try it then, and it's a while since I saw the film.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Maybe read my review just this once Shirley ...?

Shirley | 4177 comments Jean wrote: "Maybe read my review just this once Shirley ...?"

Ha ha, you got me there, Jean! Yes, I will read it! I know I am a bit odd not reading reviews, but it's just the way I prefer to read, not to know too much about the book (even though you wouldn't spoil the story, I know that!) before I start it.

message 4154: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Yes, that was my point - as you know the story. Not that I ever "spoil" things - or I try not to anyway (using spoiler tabs etc).

Nothing "odd" about it! There's room for all attitudes :)

Jean, I did mean it completely as a compliment!!!!!!!!!!!! I personally always like leaning something. Make that into a smile. Be happy.

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) Just finished Jaffa Beach which was a three star read IMO. The author tries hard to make sense of Israeli and Arab relationships setting this book in Jaffa , Israel. I enjoyed parts of it but it wasn't an unusual theme for a fiction book nor did the characters speak to me. I am subbing today and will have a bit of time to choose my next book.

Already placed in my TBR list!

Chrissie Just completed Gateway to Freedom: The Hidden History of the Underground Railroad.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It was OK. Now that I have that done I will continue in the same vein but through a more personal story: Twelve Years a Slave. I have not seen the movie.

I have seen the movie and didn't like it; don't know how the book is.

I have finished Delhi and didn't enjoy it :/ It isn't a bad book but I was annoyed from the first page though the plot seemed interesting: Delhi's (but also Indian) history from the Mughal empire to the death of Indira Gandhi. Will perhaps write a review.

message 4166: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Gemma - yes, very soon afterwards Barry Hines co-wrote the screenplay too, but it started out as his first novel.

Sounds like you had a bad time with your book. Doesn't that get you all grumpy?!

I have not come far enough to judge what I think of the book I am currently reading. I hope I will like it.....

dely | 5214 comments Chrissie wrote: "Sounds like you had a bad time with your book. Doesn't that get you all grumpy?! "

Not grumpy but annoyed and it seems to me that I have wasted my time. It's a pity because the book seemed very interesting and I wanted to learn something new about Indian history but this didn't happen because there was too much of not important things. I was writing a review and then mother and sister called me on the phone, we chatted a lot and now it's bedtime! I hope to write one (also in English) tomorrow.

Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire and Chef are two books that immediately come to mind when I think of 'Indian' books. The first I gave five stars and is totally fabulous. It is non-fiction. The latter is historical fiction, and very, very good but neither are about the city Delhi.

I will look forward to reading what you write tomorrow. Thanks for dong a bit in English/

Thanks, I've added them to my wishlist ;-) It doesn't matter if they aren't about Delhi, I like to read about every corner of India.

Thanks, added! I had already heard about it so it's strange it wasn't already in my wishlist.

Chrissie Dhanaraj, when I was reading Gora, they added babu and ma to respective men and women's names. Babu seemed to be added as a word of respect. I had a harder time understanding the significance of ma. Could you explain? It was not just always to a mother!

Glad I could help, Dely.

message 4184: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments I've just read Bellman & Black, which is the story of one man's life, set in Victorian England, with a supernatural and / or psychological element. I really enjoyed it simply as a straightforward story; it has a strong sense of place and time and convincing characters. Since finishing it however, it has left me mulling over the 'supernatural' side - and I think I'm liking it even more because it's thought-provoking.
I wonder if anyone else has read it? I'm wondering (view spoiler)

I generally don't red Sandra Brown but when I came across this on the library shelves, I decided to read it and I am so glad I didn't. I loved this one so much I have already read it 3 times.

I can well understand not being able to find another read right now, so take it easy. I find a good book either leads me right into another one or sometimes I need a time out period.

I loved Setterfield's The Thirteenth Tale, but when this one got mixed reviews I gave it a "pass". Time to give it a second look.

Ain't nothing wrong with being picky, Dale:D I'm very picky about what I read which is why I end up with so many 4 or 5 start books in my Read shelf.

I think some editions of it were subtitled 'A Ghost Story' - like this one Bellman and Black: A Ghost Story. It's certainly not a ghost story in the traditional sense, however, and perhaps some readers had false expectations. (In fact I still can't decide whether there really is a supernatural presence or not.)

message 4195: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Would you say it had more or less supernatural elements than The Thirteenth Tale, Joy? (They were only vaguely suggested, as I remember.)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments Jean wrote: "Would you say it had more or less supernatural elements than The Thirteenth Tale, Joy? (They were only vaguely suggested, as I remember.)"

Having to rack my brain to remember details of The Thirteenth Tale as I read it a year ago, but I think the supernatural is more prominent in Bellman & Black. When I was reading it I saw it as real; it's only now that I'm wondering if it was all in the mind.
