Debs The Signature of All Things by Elizabeth Gilbert . I finished this book about a week ago and I am still thinking about it. The writing is masterful, but be warned lots of detail and can be drawn out. If you enjoy historical fiction this is a must read.

Debbie, let me add the title for you: The Signature of All Things When on the app most people have trouble seeing the cover and therefore knowing which book it is :)

message 1854: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I just finished one I'd recommend. It's a indie novel about the Vietnam War that I quite enjoyed. It's written as a fiction novel but I suspect is actually nonfiction considering it seems to mirror events in the authors life, who BTW is a highly decorated Vietnam Vet. Matterhorn

Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes

Chrissie I just completed American Rose: A Nation Laid Bare: The Life and Times of Gypsy Rose Lee, only read this if you feel like getting annoyed at some slimy people....or if you are dying to know about the life of Gypsy Rose Lee, the famous American stripper. And beware - the book jumps around in time; you get no straight chronological story.

My review explains my personal reaction to the book: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Amber (amberterminatorofgoodreads) just finished the knife of never letting go and it was a pretty good read.

I just finished a charming little YA novel called Boy Proof by Cecil Castellucci. I wasn't expecting much from it but was very pleasantly surprised :)

Truly wonderful, isn't it? Glad you liked it!

I recently read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, which is still reverberating inside me. It starts off as a seemingly simple tale of family life in Nigeria but then the white missionaries come... I would definitely recommend it.

message 1870: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamie73) I've just finished Jonas Jonasson's The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden. It wasn't a bad read and kept me entertained. I think it got a little over complicated and it bored me a little.

message 1871: by Jamie (new)

Jamie (jamie73) Forgot my rating.
The Girl Who Saved The King Of Sweden by Jonas Jonasson 3 ★

message 1872: by Joy (new)

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments I've just re-read Cranford which is a look at genteel living in the mid-1800s - both witty and moving at times.

I really want to read this book. I LOVED The Kite Runner but then didn't really like And The Mountains Echoed so I am eager to see how I feel about this book.

message 1880: by Beth (new)

Beth | 508 comments I just finished The Last Letter from Your Lover which is the 4th book that I have read by the fabulous Jojo Moyes.

While none of her books ranks up there with Me Before You (one of my favorite books of 2013) I did really like it a lot. 4 stars and I recommend it if you like reading a great love story.

Scott I'll be on the lookout. I'm sure the movie for the Rosie Project will be soon as well.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Me too, Laura and Joy. And Mary Barton is amazing too - so very moving.

message 1889: by dely (new)

dely | 5214 comments I have finished River of Smoke by Amitav Ghosh and liked it.

I recommend it if you have already read the first book of the Ibis Trilogy and if you are interested in historical fiction because the background of the story is the Opium War, well, the reasons that lead to the Opium War.
For me it was a 3,5 stars book. I like Ghosh's writing style and he is really able to mix perfectly the story of the characters and the historical events. Now I will wait for the third and last book of the series that should be launched in 2015.

_jolb.85_ (_jo85_) | 76 comments Just finished reading A Discovery of Witches. Started Sunday 18th May 2014 at 11am and finished Monday 19th May 2014 at 4am. Stayed up all night to finish, but I HONESTLY cannot say WHY or WHAT I particularly enjoyed. It was recommended by a Goodreads member, and I'm glad she recommended it - I learnt SOME new facts but not sure if I can recommend this book when I don't know what it is I really liked about it.

Dely, Amitav Ghosh's earlier books are in fact better than his newer ones. I read the first of the trilogy you speak of and was disappointed b/c I compared it to his earlier books. The Shadow Lines is perhaps my favorite. The Glass Palace and the The Hungry Tide are almost as good.

Dancing in Cambodia, at Large in Burma is also very good but this one is non-fiction.

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments @ Jo. I loved A discovery of Witches too. I loved how she made the word become so real, explaining evolution of witches and vampires made it seem so believable.
