Chrissie I finished another book by Muriel Spark. This one was The Bachelors. She always makes me laugh and think.

Jason | 1051 comments I recently finished my first book by Ian McEwan and I think I will be reaching back for another before too long. Atonement was in a layered, thought-provoking story that I didn't fall in love with, but I really rather enjoyed (my review).

Chrissie So yesterday I wrote my review of Spark's The Bachelors. I spent all night thinking and thinking about events and the message of the book. I added a bit of a spoiler that explains in general terms what I think Spark was saying.

If you are curious about the book's message I have explained further in the paragraph with the spoiler: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It is interesting to note that she joined the Roman Catholic Church in 1954. The book was written in 1960.

Karin, it is HOW Spark writes that is special. She has a particular style. She has definitely hooked me. I haven't read the one you read.

PattyMacDotComma Sadly, I'm obviously not the audience for The Girl from Munich by Aussie author Tania Blanchard.

Haha! Leslie, your review made me laugh I have to say. That book sounds truly terrible. I hate it when sci-fi fails to at least invent some science. I suppose you probably aren't the target audience!

Have you read any of his Uplift books? I really liked the first trilogy (Sundiver, Startide Rising & The Uplift War)...

message 12426: by [deleted user] (new)

I haven't, Leslie, but I checked out the audiobook of Sundiver from my library this afternoon. :)

PattyMacDotComma Where the Trees Were ("were" being the operative word) by Aussie author Inga Simpson should embarrass all thinking Aussies.

PattyMacDotComma Loved Frank who saves people with music - vinyl only! - in The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce, who is well-known for another favourite of mine and others, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. I'm happy to say Frank and his friends are equally wonderful characters.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished the last of the Martin Beck mysteries - The Terrorists. I am sad to reach the end of this Swedish series...

And my audiobook reread of a Blandings Castle book, A Pelican at Blandings, was much better than my last audiobook *grin*

Are the tales believable and are they based on real events, or are we given fiction?

Raul | 745 comments Finished reading The Sound of the Mountain by Yasunari Kawabata. I loved the book and wrote a short review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 12447: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I really liked Black Diamonds: The Rise and Fall of an English Dynasty. It is both interesting and engagingly told.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I can definitely recommend the audiobook narrated by Gareth Armstrong.

message 12448: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie OK, Amalia, the book sounds pretty good actually. I am OK with the supernatural if it is presented in a convincing manner. Just because we do not understand, it doesn't mean that the tales must be false.

Thank you for your help.
