PattyMacDotComma An oldie for a challenge was the 1908 book, The Man Who Was Thursday: A Nightmare, by G.K. Chesterton, probably something later fantasy/thriller writers grew up with, since a lot felt familiar.

dely | 5214 comments In these days without internet connection I have read much more than usual.

I have read:
Big Mama's Funeral by Gabriel García Márquez 3/5.
A collection of short stories that he wrote before his more famous masterpieces. I had the feeling something was missing in the characters and in the plot.

1984 by George Orwell 4/5
Though I usually don't like distopia, I have to say that I liked this one. I have read it in English and there were several words I didn't know so I'm sure I missed emotions while reading it.

Wandering by Hermann Hesse 5/5
This was an amazing book that moved me to tears. It has very short stories (1-2 pages), poems and also two longer stories. All the stories deal with the lust of going away, explore new places, but sometimes also about nostalgia about the homeland. I loved everything about it: the lyric prose, the romantic vein of Hesse, his longing for God and a spiritual life.

The Song of Bernadette by Franz Werfel 5/5
Another book that moved me to tears. It's the story of Bernadette Soubirous, the saint of Lourdes. Seen that I would like to go to Lourdes I thought it would be good to know this saint better, her life and the story of the apparitions of the Vergin Mary.

I read it, Nancy, and enjoyed it. I like Lisa See's writing.
What are you finding difficult with it? (and I hope it picks up for you)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished George Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London. Orwell's capacity for compassion and empathy for the downtrodden is admirable. Three words to describe this book: sombre, side-splitting, shrewd. Review to come.

Everything is going wrong. My husband and I are a total wreck. I lost all my audiobooks in my iTunes library. We paid to have somebody help us move the info to the new computer, but still things are missing and other things work completely differently. Some of my audiobooks are now back, but many are gone. To achieve this partial fix we had to be without a computer for three days. This is a big problem b/c I write my blood glucose values in a diabetic report in the computer and it was gone. Every time they fix one thing a new problem arises so now we hesitate to ask for help. Many problems are unresolved, I just cannot list them all here. Progress is slowly being made and I am getting used to the new position of keys on the keyboqrd. I am trying to look on the bright side. Thanks for asking.

Christine Andrews | 1 comments This will seem crazy but I've read a lot of books in the last week. The Last Painting of Sara de Vos was quite good although I had to read about a third to really engage. I thought Miss Tonks Turns to Crime was fun. I read books like this to de-stress. Finished Three Days in April a few minutes ago. This ones for the ski-fi fans with technology run amok. Crime on the Fenswas a straight forward police procedural. I did not like The Loom. Characters' behavior were not credible. Fuzzy Nation was great old school science fiction. Nutshell was wonderfully written and a joy to listen to as an audiobook. My favorites from the list are The Last Painting..., Fuzzy Nation and Nutshell. This is my first post so hoping the book links work!

I hope they fixed everything now and that you won't have further problems, above all for the glucose values. I know how it is losing stuff on the computer or to stay without a computer.

message 11994: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie No, it is not yet fixed, dely, but we do have the computer back so I can register bg values - which is a relief!. My husband has spent the entire day trying to restore my audiobook library following instructions from, this time,Apple employees. Finally we have the library in our computer now, but we canNOT open ANY of the books.....except the new ones that I bought after purchase of the new computer. Sunday we have an appointment with Apple's so-called "Genius Staff". We have to drive three hours to get there.

Chrissie, that happened to me about four years ago. I could not open anything in my library before my computer crashed.
