Chrissie Finally I have written reviews explaining how how I felt about Jessica Mitford's memoir (Hons and Rebels) and Nancy Mitford's novel (The Pursuit of Love.

One I liked a lot. Tthe other I detested.

Pam Baddeley | 1531 comments Read the short story by Patrick Ness, The Wide, Wide Sea, which fits after book 2 of his Chaos Walking trilogy, and reviewed it https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/2041750455.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished reading Born a Crime: Stories From a South African Childhood. I found it an interesting, eye-opening story of life under and after apartheid, told by a person who legally shouldn't have been born. Trevor tells his story with warmth and humor, while getting the horrors of it across as well.

Chrissie I highly recommend You Don't Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir written by Sherman Alexie and read by him too. I feel strongly that it should be listened to, not read!

message 11863: by Nancy from NJ (new)

Katz Nancy from NJ (nancyk18) I just finished a delightful coming of age story, Fin and Lady by Cathleen Schine. This is the story of a young boy who is orphaned and then raised by his 24 year old half sister. Think Auntie Mame of the 60's.

Paul (paa00a) | 202 comments Reading through the Chronicles of Narnia with the kiddos (again), and we finished The Silver Chair, which is currently my favorite of the series – at least for another book or two.

And also was surprised to see Stephen King had a novella out: Gwendy's Button Box It was OK.

Great review Suzanne. I think I feel the same about the book. It was an uncomfortable read but very thought provoking. I think Picoult likes to tackle controversial subjects and I suppose being a white woman writing as a black woman discussing race is an interesting and controversial topic!

Chrissie I really enjoy Muriel Spark's humor. This is why I enjoyed Memento Mori.

dely | 5214 comments Today I managed to finish my beach read: Istigazione a delinquere by Danila Comastri Montanari 3*

There isn't an English edition. It is a collection of short stories in which common people turn to be killers of people they can't stand anymore: a noisy neighbour, a mother in law that is a pain in the ass, a rude stepson, etc.
These stories are funny and for once we are on the side of the killer. With these stories it's as if we take revenge of all the people we would like to kill but, of course, can't kill.

PattyMacDotComma On 5 July 2017, I was told that The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins begins with "5 July 2013". So I figured that was an omen and started it.

Not a great omen, but not bad, as it turns out.

PattyMacDotComma Ginny Moon is an adopted, autistic teenager - a real handful who can't explain what she wants to her frustrated (nervous!) Forever Family. Benjamin Ludwig has given a unique voice to the voiceless in this terrific book.

message 11896: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 238 comments Just finished City of God by Augustine of Hippo (354-430). A hard read of a work consisting of 22 books in 1,097 pages, it is divided into two parts. In the first part (books I-X) he severely criticizes the ancient Romans (his own people) and the ancient Greeks for worshiping demons; in the second part (books XI-XXII) he pours on the theology and symbolism in tracing the birth, development, and ends of both the earthly city (Rome) and the heavenly City (the New Jerusalem). I'm an easy mark: four stars for one of the cornerstones of Western thought.
