PattyMacDotComma Aussie Catherine McKinnon's new book, Storyland is an inventive fictional history of the Illawarra coast of NSW in linked short stories from the 1700s to far in the future, very far - the 2700s!

Chrissie I have completed James Baldwin. It is good. Maybe it needs some editing; this will depend upon what you are looking for.

PattyMacDotComma Gunshot Road by Aussie Adrian Hyland is written by a man who knows the Territory and its people. Emily Tempest is an Aboriginal Community Police Officer extraordinaire. Lots of action, humour, mystery, Indigenous lore. Loved it! 4.5★

Chrissie I absolutely loved Muriel Spark's A Far Cry from Kensington. Fantastic audibook narration by Juliet Stevenson.

It is so darn funny, and being about publishing houses and authors and books it has to to appeal to more than just me here at GoodReads.

Jason | 1051 comments I appreciated The Secret History by Donna Tartt, though I have no great affection for any of the characters, not to say they were not well-developed, indeed they were, they were just not necessarily the most admirable in many ways - my review.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished Queen of Scots: The True Life of Mary Stuart. 5 full stars. I was impressed and touched by this luminous biography of one great Scottish Queen, from whom every subsequent British ruler has been descended.

message 11848: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I have taken a long car tip, then my computer went on the blink. all of this has made writing reviews quite a challenge while at the same time giving me more time to read/listen to books!

For those who are interested, I have completed these three books and reviews:

Essays of E.B. White
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Washington Square
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Quiet Until the Thaw
My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

White is a joy to read. James' is great for those who want in-depth character portrayal.

Alexandra Fuller's latest (Quiet Until the Thaw) was a huge disappointment to me. I have absolutely adored her books about her family, all the many ones set in Africa, but not the latest novel! So now as a follow up to Fuller's I am reading a book that is NOT fictional and is also about Native Americans: You Don't Have to Say You Love Me: A Memoir by Sherman Alexie, which I am sure many of you know of. Immediately you recognize this is the one to read, not Fuller's. Captivating, albeit heart-wrenching - difficult family relationships honesty told.

I still have two more reviews to write but will do them as soon as I can. My computer has to be replaced, so cross your fingers for me.
