Chrissie I certainly am glad I tackled The Patriarch: The Remarkable Life and Turbulent Times of Joseph P. Kennedy. Even if it is long, it reads quickly. Yeah, I found it very Interesting.

I just finished listening to Freedom by Jonathan Franzen which I loved. I really like a book with flawed characters and the lead characters in this were definitely flawed!

message 10757: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Just read The Brother about - wait for it - suspected SWEDISH JIHADISTS! Good story, but if this is what prompted Donald Trump to "warn" Americans not to follow Sweden into the terrorist abyss, he obviously didn't read the end!

Crap, that reminds me I need to read Volume 2 and the rest of the series. Good times though.

Albert Recently finished one of Sarah Vowel's: Lafayette in the Somewhat United States. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I got smarter and laughed at the same time. A nice combination.

I enjoyed that too. Have you read The Wordy Shipmates which is also by Sarah Vowell? A friend recommended it.

I started rereading last year (when I'm done I'm going to finally read the prequel - The Sandman: Overture - which I didn't read when it came out). I think Vol. 2 is really good, and actually a better indicator of what the series is like than vol. 1.

Great review Dale!

Did you read The Snow Child? I'm curious now how this one compares to that one.

I thought The Snow Child was well written, and most of my friends loved it .. but for me, a few parts didn't gel. There were some inconsistencies that bothered me - the magic realistic elements were great, but a few of the non-magic parts didn't fully make sense to me.

message 10771: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've just finished The Lover by Marguerite Duras. I think I enjoyed the film more than the novella, but it was a worthy read still.

Chrissie I am glad I have finally finished The Fountain Overflows by Rebecca West.

This was a disappointment to me because I loved the author's non-fiction Black Lamb and Grey Falcon

I studied The Lover for my French A-level. I found Duras' writing style uncomfortable but it was interesting.

message 10777: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Alice and Esther, I read The Lover by Duras in my french classes too. I liked it a lot. It moved me. I liked the mood it conjures, and it is better to read books untranslated. If possible.

My favourite book from A-level was La Gloire de mon père (My Father's Glory). And my overall favourite was L'Étranger (The Stranger)

La Gloire de mon père, and the sequel, was made into a film with Gerard Depardieu.

These books are by Marcel Pagnol aren't they?

Marius and the other two books in the Marseille trilogy were books I also enjoyed. (I've also seen the films, but found the Marseille accents very difficult to understand.)

Chrissie Here is a really good book: The Girl from the Metropol Hotel: Growing Up in Communist Russia.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

So very much better than A Gentleman in Moscow. Well that is my view! Also, very, very good audiobook narration by Anna Summers.

message 10788: by Ioana (new)

Ioana Great, I have the audiobook and hope to get to it soon.

message 10789: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Ioana, do you mean The Girl from the Metropol Hotel: Growing Up in Communist Russia? If so, I hope you will be as pleased as I was. What is so amazing for me is that I prefer long over short books and still I really enjoyed it.

message 10790: by Ioana (new)

Ioana Chrissie, yes, that's the one I meant. I just got the audiobook a couple days ago...and I think I'll like it.

Sandysbookaday (taking a step back for a while) (sandyj21) | 1533 comments Just finished Skin Privilege (Grant County, #6) by Karin Slaughter Skin Privilege by Karin Slaughter. Not an easy read. Gut wrenching in fact. But soooooooo good! WOW! I feel like I have been hit by a freight train - that's how fast paced this book was. But it was good - really good.
