PattyMacDotComma Just read my first James Lee Burke, and I'm sure it won't be my last.

He sure can write! This is one of his latest, I think, The Jealous Kind, which paints quite a picture of 1952 Houston teens and crims.

Good to know. I think I'll take it off my wishlist, then. Thanks :)

Gemma (gemmagem20) | 460 comments I have just finished a Man Called Ove, I gave it 2 stars. It was 'ok' I really liked Ove, and the back story about his wife. Liked the neighbour too, overall I just found it quite boring and even found myself skimming towards the end. Didn't live up to the hype for me,

I find it shocking that this is your first time reading Wodehouse Gill! I guess that I thought all English people were introduced to his books in their teens. Off to look at your review now.

I know what you mean, Leslie. I think I may have glanced at a couple when I was younger, but they didn't appeal to me at all. Each time I've read one of your comments on him, I've wondered whether I should give him another chance!

It's never too late!

Leslie | 16369 comments I think that his books might fall into that 'marmite' category -- you either love them or hate them. They are supremely fluff but if you find him funny, they are hilarious! But if you don't see the humor, don't persevere; he doesn't have a variety of styles as some authors do.

I haven't read them either Leslie ... probably because they came over as being about "posh" people. But I will give them a try one day as you've recommended them - just need to get through my existing backlog first ;-)

I started with Redshirts - so funny.
Then a colleague lent me the first four books of Old Man's War series - brilliant.

message 10317: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma Quirky novel about young girl who tries to earn a living in what was a real exotic dancer club, Market Street Cinema in San Francisco.

The author, Michele Machado has done a good job of describing what it was like without it being erotica.

Chinook | 543 comments I finished the audiobook of The Princess Diarist - I started off reading it and switched to the audio. I gave it five stars - it might be a bit of an emotional rating and I think that reading the book would have been at least one less star but Carrie Fishers wit works for me, so hearing her read it was great.

I also read The Origin of Species. It was full of a lot of sad, difficult topics but ultimately the spark of hope wins out. I really liked it and wish I hadn't waited so long to finally read his author, who was recommended to me twenty years ago when I was
in high school. It's also very, very Canadian.

dely | 5214 comments Finished reading Cathedral by Raymond Carver 3*

I enjoyed these short stories and Carver's writing style. All these stories deal with less important moments in life, or moments that don't seem important to us, but nevertheless they are. There aren't great happenings, and the reader is put in the story when things already happened. The many themes of these stories are: loneliness, divorce, alcoholism, loss of a job.

I recommend it to who loves short stories and essential writing.

Chrissie I finished The Fall of the House of Wilde: Oscar Wilde and His Family earlier today. It was a book that gave me quite a bit of trouble in the beginning, but by the end I really, really liked it!

Finished today It by Stephen King.
It took me years to get to it - I was the last of my family reading it. A really beautiful book, with many themes and really well written and organied. Still ... it has too many words. If he finished it 3/400 pages before it coul be a real masterpiece. Like this is "only" a really good book. In Italian we say "ha voluto strafare" - he has "overdone" it

PattyMacDotComma It's hard to believe Trevor Noah, the well-known comedian and presenter of The Daily show (used to be Jon Stewart's), had such a scary upbringing in apartheid South Africa. Everybody had a tribe . . . except him.
