What have you just read? Opinions, recommendations & reviews

He sure can write! This is one of his latest, I think, The Jealous Kind, which paints quite a picture of 1952 Houston teens and crims.

Good to know. I think I'll take it off my wishlist, then. Thanks :)

I find it shocking that this is your first time reading Wodehouse Gill! I guess that I thought all English people were introduced to his books in their teens. Off to look at your review now.

I know what you mean, Leslie. I think I may have glanced at a couple when I was younger, but they didn't appeal to me at all. Each time I've read one of your comments on him, I've wondered whether I should give him another chance!
It's never too late!

I haven't read them either Leslie ... probably because they came over as being about "posh" people. But I will give them a try one day as you've recommended them - just need to get through my existing backlog first ;-)

Great review. I am relatively new to Scalzi but am trying to read through his back catalogue.

He's completely new to me so I will be close behind you reading his other books:)

I started with Redshirts - so funny.
Then a colleague lent me the first four books of Old Man's War series - brilliant.

The author, Michele Machado has done a good job of describing what it was like without it being erotica.

I also read The Origin of Species. It was full of a lot of sad, difficult topics but ultimately the spark of hope wins out. I really liked it and wish I hadn't waited so long to finally read his author, who was recommended to me twenty years ago when I was
in high school. It's also very, very Canadian.

I enjoyed these short stories and Carver's writing style. All these stories deal with less important moments in life, or moments that don't seem important to us, but nevertheless they are. There aren't great happenings, and the reader is put in the story when things already happened. The many themes of these stories are: loneliness, divorce, alcoholism, loss of a job.
I recommend it to who loves short stories and essential writing.

Finished today It by Stephen King.
It took me years to get to it - I was the last of my family reading it. A really beautiful book, with many themes and really well written and organied. Still ... it has too many words. If he finished it 3/400 pages before it coul be a real masterpiece. Like this is "only" a really good book. In Italian we say "ha voluto strafare" - he has "overdone" it

Wow! I was completely unaware of this book. I have added it to my to read list. It sounds fascinating
I had never heard of this book either, Elaine. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. Definitely thought provoking.

Sara O'Leary's new picture book You Are Three about three-year olds and how they've changed in a year.
