I wish the book was more focused on the Wyeths. I adore their art.

I too like the Wyeth's paintings but I liked learning about the artist's subject's life too.

Jamie Wyeth and Autobiography are to stunning books, one by each artist, if you want to see their paintings and hear their words. Andrew Wyeth: Memory & Magic comes close. Should picky me try the book of historical fiction you have read?

I would have to put the Wyeths among my favorite artists.

I agree with your opinion. The book doesn't feel finished, and of course it wasn't!

message 9861: by Hannah (new)

Hannah (hannahgsteele) | 331 comments Chrissie, yes it does not. Though from the beginning I wasn't able to really get into it. The opening pages, in my opinion, lacked a certain spark.

I agree. The part that I did like was the evacuation of Paris episode. That is all that stood out for me. I couldn't rate the entire book on just that. That French people loved it I can understand, b/c it is their story.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Sticking my neck out to say that I did enjoy Suite Francaise but I did read it twelve years ago and perhaps would be more discerning these days. Read it for a book group and from memory, everyone liked it. Maybe I should re-read it to see how I feel about it these days.

Gill | 5719 comments I enjoyed reading Death Going Down. It's a detective novel, set in post Second World War Buenos Aires.

You see, Hannah and I didn't love it either. I read it right when it came out.

Read these quite a while ago but I remember I loved them. You get very involved with the continuing saga of the family.

I understand that. In some ways our view change but in other ways they remain very constant. If you seriously think you would judge it differently now you really ought to give it another chance.

Most of them! But I started reading them 40+ years ago so it works out to be rereading them once every 10 years or so :)

Phrynne | 2479 comments Same Leslie. I have read all of her Regency romance books at least twice and some more than that. I just dip into them whenever I feel like it - I also own all of them although some of them are foxed and dog eared.

Yes, that is a book I have to read. I love biographies.....well, if they are good! I don't love all of Faulkner's books but I am curious to learn more about the man. Also anything about southern culture attracts me. Thanks.
