This sounds fun Leslie! Maybe I'll try to squeeze it in over October

Raul | 745 comments I have just finished reading The Member of the Wedding and I agree with the member who recommended it to me, you simply can't describe the work of Mccullers until you've read it, a fantastic story.

Chinook | 543 comments I just finished Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth and Justice After Serial which continues and elaborates on the story told in season one of the Serial podcast. I really liked it (I'm a bit obsessed wth the case.)

dely | 5214 comments I have finished Friars and Filipinos: An Abridged Translation of Dr. Jose Rizal's Tagalog Novel, Noli Me Tangere 2*
My fault because I downloaded and abridged edition. I don't know why I have been so stupid, I hate abridged editions so I really don't remember why I downloaded this one.

Chrissie I liked The Human Comedy by William Saroyan very much. I knew how I felt but it certainly took me awhile to figure out why I reacted as I did.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished The Club Dumas which I enjoyed a lot!

message 9519: by [deleted user] (new)

I just finished The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley, which I thought was good, found the 'past' parts of this time-slip novel and the tie-in with the building of the Christ the Redemer Statue in Rio very interesting.
Also just finished The Sleep Room by F.R. Tallis. Kind of creepy in places with a twist at the end which I should have seen coming but didn't.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've just finished The High Mountains of Portugal. It's certainly a very original book. I like magical realism, and books which weave disparate stories together, but this one seemed a bit strained to me.

Have you read anything else by Yann Martel, Susan?

message 9525: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments Gill — Yes I enjoyed both Life of Pi and Self, so I thought I knew what to expect! The High Mountains has had very mixed reviews here; I see that some of the readers who praised it want to re-read it to tease out the meaning, but I don't think that, for me at least, there's any more meaning to be gleaned.

I enjoyed it, but it didn't quite hang together for me.

Chrissie Paul recommended Landmarks. It is very good. If you enjoy nature-writing, you have to read it.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) I've finished Genghis: Lords of the Bow, the second novel in the "Conqueror" series by Conn Iggulden. Except for a minor historical error (that Sun Tzu, author of the Art of War, was from the Chin (Jin) Dynasty of Jurchens (1115-1234 AD), when in fact he was a Han from the Spring & Autumn Period), it was generally historically accurate. The story is a gripping page-turner. 3.7 stars.

Thanks for the info, Alice. I like having a little bit of info about the book. It whets my appetite!

Same here, in fact I've noticed I hardly ever click on links to reviews unless I already know the book or get a little bit of extra info (it doesn't need to be a full second review obviously, just a little bit of info on likes or dislikes or the type of book)

I just don't have the time to read each review, especially for books that I don't know anything about. I often look if the poster has mentioned it is a 5* book for them though so having that little additional info is helpful to me.

But I applaud you Bette for taking the time!

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished another Inspector Montalbano book, The Potter's Field, #13 in this Sicilian police series. I continue to enjoy the characters but was a bit upset by the turn in one of the relationships and the 'mystery' was a little more obvious in this one. 3*

I then breezed through a historical fiction romance which was silly but fun -- the second in the Poor Relations series, Miss Tonks Turns to Crime. 3*

PattyMacDotComma The Whites by Harry Brandt is an absolute first-rate novel that happens to cover crime/police/mystery/families/despair/retribution/life/love/death. Have I missed anything much? Brandt certainly didn't.

But don't you think Jack Weatherford's Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World is better book than the series by Conn Iggulden?!

I listened to Serial. It was compulsive listening.
not sure I would want to read the book. Is is any good?

Shirley | 4177 comments I've just finished Black-Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin which I've given two stars. I don't like giving out lower ratings, but this one I found I really didn't like the writing, although an interesting storyline. To me, it was rather stilted and clumsy, and could have been so much better in the hands of another writer. I did finish it, as it was for my book club, and I
always try to make the effort!

Chrissie I finished The Pecan Man. I liked it and I can recommend it to others to read or listen to....even if it is not perfect! Definitely a good book about the South.

Personally I think the audiobook narration by Suzanne Toren is so wonderful that it is better to listen to than to read on paper.

Chinook | 543 comments Esther - the book explains further why Adnan is innocent, unlike Serial which left it open ended. But even better than the book is the Undisclosed podcast that lays out extra info since Serial and covers his PCR trial.

Although not always easy to read, the resilience and inner strength of the people came through strongly.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've finished The Marauders by Tom Cooper a few days ago. It's an interesting book. It's set close to New Orleans, in one of the small fishing villages in Louisiana right after Hurricane Katrina and the big oil spill which brought the region to its knees economically and ecologically. Great, not always likeable characters with more or less criminal ambition in a novel that is tragically comical and sometimes reads like an homage to hard-boiled crime fiction.
