Sweeney's book looks interesting, but the reviews are mixed. Let us know what you think, please.

Chinook | 543 comments I read Angel Catbird, Vol. 1 on the strength of loving Atwood. It was a slow start but I got into it at the end. A lot of reviewers say it has a Golden Agr of comics vibe - I think I'd agree, though I'm not a comics expert by far.

Johanna | 130 comments Finally finished As I Lay Dying, which I did not enjoy - at all. I had trouble following the country patois and the plot details, many of which were just implied, but most of all because of the ignorant, brutish and greedy characters. I read The Sound and the Fury, which is just as difficult, but I loved Dilsey, Benjy and Caddie and their story and enjoyed the book's challenging, figure-it-out character, so it definitely was the ugly characters - Anse Bundren, you lazy, miserly, detestable pig! - that did it for me...

I agree with you in your comparison of the two books! I loved Benjjy and how Faulkner chose to draw him.

Certainly, Chrissie! The first few chapters look promising."

it gets a big difficult when it switches to Michael, the first Romanov. I will tomorrow search the web for a family tree diagram. I plan to print this out. I wish the audiobook had provided with in a PDF.I have read that the paper book has the corresponding part of the family tree at the beginning of each chapter....if I remember correctly.

Susan, what an awful ending for the haughty Wallis, wasn't it. The situation with her lawyer was indeed bizarre! I was glad I read the book.

message 9463: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I agree, Bette. Caroline Blackwood's interviews with the Duchess's old friends, and the last chapter of the book, were particularly illuminating. I think The Last of the Duchess is a must-read for anyone interested in the Wallis-Edward saga.

Also, I know that there is some suppressed information about the late Duchess that will be released 50 years after her death, in 2036. That should be very interesting!

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments Gosh, how old will I be then.... 71! Hope I get to read it.

Petra | 3324 comments I finished Between Shades of Gray last night. I am not a fan. I found it too young and with too many unbelievable happenings. I think the author missed a chance of telling a strong story.

PattyMacDotComma Watching Edie by Camilla Way gets a 3.5★ rating from me.

Two girls, very different, grow up with secrets and problems and meet later in pretty lousy circumstances. Is Heather stalking Edie? When does caring become taking over? Kind of scary, but a little disappointing to me.

Leslie | 16369 comments I have finished a Golden Age mystery, A Question of Proof, which I enjoyed (4*). This is the first one in the series which is often the weakest (though sometimes the strongest!) -- I liked this one so will proceed to read more Blake :)

And I finished the audiobook of Geraldine Brooks' Pulitzer-prize winner, March. My review is here:

Diane S ☔ Thanks Gill and Bette. So ready for Fall temps.

Chinook | 543 comments I just finished The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl. It fell flat for me. She had some interesting things to say and I hugely identified with being awkward at school and not tuned into fashion and music, but some of the rest was a bit formulaic and simplistic. And her stated aim is to chip away at stereotypes of black women but she then perpetuates Asian stereotypes.

PattyMacDotComma Oh boy! Talk about good Aussie political gossip. 4.5★ for Planet Jackson: Power, Greed and Unions! A delusional whistle-blower aims at the Big Kahuna, takes him down but it all backfires on her.

Fascinating read for anyone interested in union power in politics and vice-versa.

My long review with lots of quotes

Chrissie The Romanovs: 1613-1918 could have been good, but it wasn't, at least not as far as I'm concerned.

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Nope, this author isn't for me. I also read his Jerusalem: The Biography and was disappointed. I went back and compared what exactly displeased me with the first book. I was surprised to find that the problems that arose in the first reoccurred in the second. Please not ethe what I think of the audiobook narration does not influence my rating of the book. So you understand how I do it.....

message 9491: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I finished listening to Frog Music today. I am not a fan, although I really liked Emma Donaghue's Room. I found this story was misrepresented in the blurb and didn't hang together well at all.

PattyMacDotComma A change of pace for me - my first attempt at reading a manga publication. A bit of a struggle at first, but after I reviewed it the publisher wrote to explain a lot, which I've added at the end. (It's a comic format based on Japanese anime, sort of.)

This one is the Nathaniel Hawthorne classic but in manga style Manga Classics: The Scarlet Letter.

If it helps new readers appreciate literature, I'm all for it. My review

Chrissie Well I have given up on The Way We Live Now. I dumped it halfway through. It is long, way too long!

My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Trollope's books are too similar for my taste. When you get around to your fourth you start getting bored.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a book that would have been good for Halloween -- The Castle of Otranto. This 1764 classic is the very first Gothic horror novel & I enjoyed the campiness (campy-ness?) of it very much. My review:
