Leslie | 16369 comments I finished the audiobook of Kidnapped & found Michael Page's Scottish burr perfect for this classic. Too bad I found at least one place where a paragraph of text was missing (based on my paperback edition)!

I also recently finished a fairly new book -- a mystery with some time travel involved -- A Murder in Time.

TSATF is one of my all time favorite novels. I've read it twice so far.

Chrissie If you have the slightest interest in Russian people then I recommend Secondhand Time: The Last of the Soviets. It is not a dry book of non-fiction.

Zippergirl Best book I've read this month--ARC from NetGalley. Magic in the time of the plague. (Gritty realism.)

Chinook | 543 comments I finally read The Martian - I don't know if it was just that I was expecting something a bit boring at times because of heard it involved a lot of math, but I loved it. Much funnier than I had anticipated.

W hat did you think of A Murder in Time Leslie? It sounds just my cup of tea but I see it has mixed reviews.

Joy Stephenson (joyfrankie) | 243 comments Living Alone is definitely the strangest book I've read this year. Part fantasy, part political satire, part comedy of manners. No real plot but beguiling. Written in 1919 by a feminist author I'd not previously heard of.

Free on kindle, I see. I'll give it a go, Joy.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Finished Watership Down. A perfect summer read! With all the insanity going on around the world, this book is a good reminder of the importance of love, compassion and care for our community. 4 full stars.

If you don't mind the fact that the time travel comes out of the blue with no explanation given or even suggested, the mystery part I found very enjoyable. I had expected it to be more sci fi but it really is a thriller/mystery book which has this one sci fi twist to it.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've just finished What's Eating Gilbert Grape. It was a quick read — dark and disturbing, yet humorous.

I was pleasantly surprised as well. To think that a hard science fiction book could become that popular and be made into a successful film. There's hope yet.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished a very big book of short stories (800+ pages) called The Best American Mystery Stories of the Century. My review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

message 8922: by PattyMacDotComma (new)

PattyMacDotComma 5★ for a wonderful book about Gumbaynggirr Country in which I live. (mid north coast, NSW, Australia)
Singing the Coast by Margaret Somerville
Singing the Coast
by Margaret Somerville and our friend Tony Perkins, who has made us not feel like the trespassers we really are.

They are doing their best to preserve the knowledge and the songlines in whatever media they can so we don't risk losing this most ancient of histories. Fascinating. Some great stories.

This is one of those books that I would recommend to everyone. It's just wonderful.

message 8926: by Susan (new)

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I've just finished Fluence, a dystopian novel set in the near future. As some reviewers have suggested, the story is very plausible — in many ways, it's already happening! The book was a little uneven, with some clunky dialogue and cliche scenes, but it was an engrossing read.

3.5 ★, rounded up to 4

Leslie | 16369 comments I recently finished rereading via audio Captain Blood -- I love this swashbuckling historical fiction about an Irish doctor wrongly accused of being a traitor (as part of Monmouth's rebellion). Recommended to those who like adventure stories and/or pirates! 5

PattyMacDotComma 4.5★ for Megan Miranda's backwards-told mystery
All the Missing Girls by Megan Miranda
All the Missing Girls

Good characters, good story, creepy woods. Two girls disappear, ten years apart. Nic seems to be connected to both.

Can you escape your past? (in a word, no)

Jen, I read this not too long ago and was really affected by it as well. It is one of those novels that stayed with me long after setting it down.

PattyMacDotComma Wonderful Australian non-fiction art book about how to address the climate change conversation through art. Still available on NetGalley with no archive date yet.

Science and data don't move people the way pictures do. Think of the drowned refugee toddler.

ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE by Guy Abrahams
ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE is a movement, and this is the first publication to come out of it. Very impressive.

My review - a solid 5★

It certainly is interesting, Greg, and I think it's great that people are making every attempt to share information about climate and science in ways that even the least scientific of us can grasp.

Communication!

Chrissie I have completed The Book of Harlan. It sorely disappointed me. I explain why in my review:

https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Even if I didn't like the book, I very much appreciated the audiobook narration by Robin Miles.
