John Frankham (johnfrankham) Leslie, Sandy. I have read two by John Bude in the series you mention. One based in the Lake District, and one in Cornwall. Both good - better than routine, so I will be reading all I can find.

Just to confirm, the intention is every 2 months so the next one is April. They are listed in the upcoming Readalongs thread. Not too long to go till the next one.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments @Diane, currently reading Shelter as well, I quite like the start of it (though 'like' sounds wrong for that particular beginning)

@Gill, I will see if I can find a copy, I'd love to join in!

dely | 5214 comments Have finished Timeless wisdom from ancient India by Basant K. Gupta 3*

It's a good introduction to Veda, Vedanta and Bhagavad Gita.
It was a very slow read also because after a few sentences I stopped to meditate about them or I re-read some parts to be sure to assimilate as much as possible.

My very short review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 7818: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I finished the audio of Nora Webster yesterday. I liked the author's writing style and will look into more books by him one day. Overall, Nora's story of adjusting to her life as a widow and single mother is an emotional one. It's an emotion that is rather arm's length, though. Told from Nora's perspective, there may be a bit of Nora protecting her emotions and self from herself causing this distance.

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I've finished Ancient Light by John Banville 4★ It's John Banville; he's always a 4 or 5★ read

I've finished The Story Sisters by Alice Hoffman, a re-read for me. First read rating 4★ but only a 3★ rating for the re-read.

I'm busy emptying my study of furniture and books because the builder needs to pull up a few floorboards - so no reviews written for these two.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I've finished listening to Don Quixote two days ago. It somehow always intimidated me because of its length but once I started I couldn't stop, and it's put me in such a good mood I had to stop myself from skipping through my apartment basically.

message 7821: by Alice (new)

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Jenny, I must say the length of Don Quixote has always been a sort of deterrent for me. Now you're making it sound enticing enough for me to add it - a good mood is hard to beat :)

My youngest brother loved DonQuixote, but it was a long and painful read for me. But then when I went back to reread a speech by the shepherdess, I was laughing. I suspect that had I listened to the audio book I'd have liked it better. Also, had I known what the novels were like that were being spoofed.

message 7828: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I found Don Quixote repetitive........

message 7829: by Caecilia (new)

Caecilia Saori Chrissie wrote: "Hales, I remember all of that. Very good book! YOU have to read or listen to The Winter of Our Discontent. I have forgotten how much I love Steinbeck."

reading your reply has me nodding.
I am not much of a classics reader, but John Steinbeck and George Orwell - big yes to their works.

message 7830: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Caecilia, I like some classics and not others, just as with other books. Steinbeck's cover a wide range for me.

;-) he sure has.

-- on a different note,
I have finished "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore". if you want fun and light entertainment, go for it. personally, I felt it had potential but the author could have made more out of it.

message 7832: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie You don't like classics? Well try this. You don't like Victorian novels? Well try this.

I am speaking of Phineas Finn by Anthony Trollope. You do not have to read the books of the series in order, but I am glad I did. I also think you should listen to the audiobook narrated by Timothy West.

Zippergirl The Prophet's Ladder The Prophet's Ladder by Jonathan Williams

This was a beautifully written book about North Africa (and bygone India and China) with mixed storylines of the Maghreb past, present day Tunisia following the revolution of 2011, and a leap into the future with plausible sci-fi developments. Written by an American who lived in Morocco while in the Peace Corps, and has a real feel for the people, the places and the political changes going on throughout these old colonies.

I'm between four and five stars.

Caecilia Saori :-) I have finished My Name Is Lucy Barton in the course of the night.

it is such a peaceful book. Strout sets accents to specific parts but always leaves enough room for the reader to fill in the gaps ... I so loved this. a very human book and Lucy, the main character, is sharing many everyday thoughts, things we struggle with in our daily lives.
I have enjoyed reading it, a lot.

Susan (goodreadscomsusanaustralia) | 1200 comments I’ve just finished Soft City by one of my favourite travel writers, Jonathan Raban. As the title implies, the book is about the human, “soft” side of cities and city life. It’s interesting and beautifully written, but a little dense, which is why it took me nearly a month to read.

dely | 5214 comments B the BookAddict wrote: "You've had enough sex, hey dely? lol:) "

Lol, now I will read de Sade, he has more immagination!

There was only a bit in the first story. I didn't know it was a collection of short stories so I thought that I would have found it in the whole book. I don't want to seem a prude person, but really, till now in every Japanese book I've read there is some sex. Never explicit or too hard, but I wondered why they add it everywhere. Well, this time it was because the topic was marital infidelity.

message 7845: by B the BookAddict (new)

B the BookAddict (bthebookaddict) | 8315 comments I don't think that you're a prude, dely. Sometimes, I feel like that about certain books and certain authors, it seems it's all they can write about. And I'm anything but straight-laced!:)

I think I feel like that about most eroticism books and I wonder what is lacking in a person's own life when they constantly read these type of books.

We have Jean Naylor in this group, (also in her group RFP), and I was sure she was doing a Charles Dickens thread; she loves Dickens. Ask your dad, he's in the other group as well, he'll know.
