I loved the film "Out of Africa" starring Meryl Streep, but haven't read the book.

Chrissie Bette, yep, I read and liked your review VERY MUCH back when you first wrote it! Then I never got around to reading the book.

Reading this one now, Chrissie. Not sure how factual it is but so, far it is very good. Have also sent form the autobiography of Markham.

Paris Without End: The True Story of Hemingway's First Wife is in fact the one I would prefer to read. I am worried about the fictional versus factual aspects of The Paris Wife. I want to get towards the truth.

Chrissie, I understand what you're saying. But remember, Paula McLain uses Hem and Hadley's letters plus various research articles to formulate her book.

I've heard that Paris Without End: The True Story of Hemingway's First Wife by Gioia Diliberto is mostly factual, as well. I have it on my tbr but haven't been able to source it yet.

McLain's is the only one I can get my hands on. IF both become available I will read both. I thought maybe others could get it even if I cannot, and that is why I mentioned it. I would have preferred Diliberto's simply b/c it is non-fiction, NOT historical fiction. Well, at least McLain's is, as you say, based on true facts.

Susan (suze0501) | 32 comments Just finished The Bones Beneath. Very fond of DI Thorne, but this is a long way from his best outing. What can I say? Eminently put-down-able!

I really enjoyed The Children Act and read it very quickly. Here is my review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

This book was a perfect subject for me at the moment as it dealt with ethics, law and the background of a haematology case which is where I am currently working. I think others would enjoy it as well

message 5270: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Bohman | 39 comments I just finished War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. It's now my third favorite book, behind Lord of the Rings and Les Miserables.

Alice Poon (alice_poon) Benjamin wrote: "I just finished War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy. It's now my third favorite book, behind Lord of the Rings and Les Miserables."

Benjamin, Les Mis and LOTR are also my favorites! My favorite by Tolstoy is Anna Karenina, and I plan to read War and Peace some time :)

You clearly like the epics! I have read all three of these but only LoTR is on my top 10 list...

message 5273: by Petra (new)

Petra | 3324 comments I enjoyed all three of those, too, Benjamin. They are all such good epics.
I thought Anna started out great, too, but lost my patience with her about half-way through and gave up. Perhaps I should try the book again?

message 5274: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin Bohman | 39 comments Yes, I do love long books, but I don't think I have enough in me to read In Search of Lost Time :)
I plan on reading Anna Karenina as well.

message 5275: by Dhanaraj (new)

Dhanaraj Rajan | 2962 comments Completed reading an excellent provocative novel (You Shall Know Them). The main theme of the novel is a search for an answer to the question: WHAT IS MAN? or to be more precise WHAT EXACTLY DIFFERENTIATES MAN FROM A BEAST? message 5290: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished listening to Dodger by Terry Pratchett. Stephen Briggs did an excellent job with the narration but I found that the book wasn't as good as the Discworld books (at least for me). Maybe this young adult novel was too young for me (or to put it differently, maybe I was too old for it!)...

message 5292: by GeneralTHC (new)

GeneralTHC I just finished Jack of Spades. I keep thinking it would make a perfect episode for THE OUTER LIMITS.

Leslie | 16369 comments I finished Eugene O'Neill's Long Day's Journey Into Night (for which he won his fourth Pulitzer prize) -- a full 5 ★! Powerful play about a dysfunctional family, I found it disturbing & depressing but the characters are so true.

I also have (finally) finished Ten Years Later, volume 3.2 of the D'Artagnan series. Less action and more plotting in this one... 3★

Petra | 3324 comments I just finished my review of Kafka on the Shore:

Murakami's books are quite unique...in a good way. I slightly prefer 1Q84 over this one but would recommend them both to anyone who enjoys some magical realism.

Ann I just finished Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk and I thought it was very good. It took me on an emotional roller coaster ride but it might appeal to or make more sense to readers from the U.S
