Terrence Perera (terrenceperera) | 1 comments My name is Terrence Perera and I am a newcomer to this group. I wish to give some details of myself.
I attended Holy Cross College and the University of Ceylon in Sri Lanka. I am also a Chartered Accountant.
As a Chartered Accountant, I worked extensively in Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe.
I am now an author and have written four books, all set in Sri Lanka.
The books I like most are Victorian novels, detective & mystery novels and novels set in Sri Lanka. Some of my favorite authors are Anthony Trollope, Jane Austen and Agatha Christie. I also enjoy reading "children s books" such as the Harry Potter series and the "William" books by Richmal Crompton.

Antonio Gallo (galloway) | 2327 comments Hello everybody! I am a 76 year-old-son of an old post-Gutenberg printer. My father did not just print books. He “composed” them letter by letter, printed the sheet, inked and pressed it, folded and sewed the pages, glued and sold them. But he was also a book collector. I've been busy for past few months filing my paper library into GoodReads shelves. This is called “evolution” …

Welcome Antonio! I've seen some of those old typesetting-printers on a vacation to Williamsburg, Virginia. It really is a wonderful piece of history your father participated in!

When I think of how things have rapidly/deeply changed in only few years, both in reading and writing, when I think back to those days when I was very little and I could hardly see the difference between a vowel and a consonant in those letters you Greg mention seen on a vacation, when I think of me, now, digitalizing letters on my Chromebook and instantly communicate with you in some far part of this wonderful world, well I don't know what to think more ... thank you Greg ...

Welcome Ron. We are glad to have you here to discuss books but please be aware that we have a strict no-self-promotion policy so "trying to get, as well as give, reviews" would not be appropriate.

I do -- I read hardcovers, paperbacks, ebooks & audiobooks! Despite the ease of getting ebooks & digital audiobooks, I still like the feeling I get when reading a really good book in print best.

It would be nice if we could describe and discuss our feelings and sensations on reading a "printed page" and a "screen page". As far as I'm concerned I think that a print page is just like a "dead" reality which comes back to life only when I read it. Whereas reading a screen page, while I'm online, that very page is almost as it was alive. As a matter of fact it has live links and moving pics, I can copy it, share it, discuss in a chat, in another window, with a friend who at that moment is on the other side of the world. I can copy it, transform it, use it and then carry on reading it ... That makes quite a difference, doesn'it?

Manny (virmarl) Antonio wrote: "May I put you all a question? Do you still read printed books? If not why (not)?"

I prefer printed books by far but given I've run out of room to store my books and given I never throw out or give away books I get ebooks on occasion. It used to be one would save some money with ebooks but the savings now a days is minuscule.

I find this irksome as well, especially when I can often get wonderfully discounted paperbacks and hardbacks at used book stores & library sales.

I find all that a distraction from the book -- when I read a print book, I enter into it much more fully and sometimes don't even notice if hours have gone by! I don't get as fully immersed in digital media and so I lose some of that magic of being transported.

Greg - I know what you mean! Though for classics, ebooks are mostly free; since I read a lot of classics this is great for me (though sometimes I have to hunt for the book I want).

My choice is mainly of "room": I really have my house full of books, and I sometimes found the books I had bought not really worth the space they occupy. I've therefore decided to look for ebooks at the beginnig, only to buy good editions of only those worth keeping - and they're a few

It's a smart choice Laura! Even in the new house, if I keep getting books, I'll run out of room!
