Tahca Gandalf would win.Because he's one of the Istari which means he's a lesser god

Kimbo Gandalf would win! Go Gandalf!!

Eleanor Rigby Gandalf

message 54: by Maxx (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maxx i would agree gandalf is much more awesome cause of his sword and would boss dubuldore. poor doubledoor

message 55: by Kai (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kai Gandalf as if he was fighting a elephant

message 56: by Karla (last edited Sep 21, 2013 10:43AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Karla Goodhouse Dumbledore may be a wise experienced mortal wizard, with the most powerful wand ever. But Gandalf is a demi-god wielding a staff and sword, who's spent thousands of years to perfecting his craft. Dumbledore wouldn't stand a chance.

message 57: by l (new) - rated it 4 stars

l Dumbledore, are you kidding?
Gandalf came back from heavens
Gandalf is a white wizard
Gandalf is like a god compared to Dumbledore.
Don't get me wrong, I like Dumbledore, but it's silly to attempt to compare them when Gandalf is on a whole different level.

message 58: by Maxx (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maxx really it is

Josephine Nolan Not a fair matchup. Gandalf for sure. Gandalf is the benchmark against which most wizards are measured :) (except Merlin, which would be Gandalf's inspiration).

message 60: by Maxx (new) - rated it 5 stars

Maxx i think Gandalf would win for a magic fight. but Dumbledore would win in a physical fight

Jamie Stephanie wrote: "i'd say dementors, but thats mostly because i don't know what ringwraiths are and this isn't really happenening and really these are on just different planets and it's just a Q like who would win P..."

How can you argue on something to do with the lord of the rings, if you don't know what these things are?

As for the argument... Gandalf is technically immortal (well no technically about it really...) and Dumbledore is not. So it depends on the parameters and the situation the fight is in. If it were a small skirmish they would probably be easily matched, however if it were a full on fight to the end Gandalf would own Dumbledore.

Also, who is this Gandolf people keep mentioning?

Josephine Nolan Maxx wrote: "i think Gandalf would win for a magic fight. but Dumbledore would win in a physical fight"

Not sure about D winning in a physical tossup. Gandalf single handedly fights a demon Balrog with a sword (and some magic, true), hacks away at orcs by the dozen an fights in epic battles... I think Gandalf would pretty much take on anyone in a physical mashup. :)

Josephine Nolan It's worth noting, that JRR modelled Gandalf on a god, not on a wizard. JRR disclosed that the inspiration for Gandalf was more Odin (the grey wanderer), lord of the Nordic pantheon, more so than Merlin -- although he admitted it was an amalgam of both.
Different league, like Luna said.

Brix Dominic I personally like Gandalf more.

Well i love them both but ill say Dumbledore... not interms of power but as a symbol ...A symbol of hope a symbol that gud still exists, i feel dumbledore is more like the ray of light which ppl look out for..a leader who cud lead ppl to a battle ...and for neil buddy dumbledore was brought down by snape but not coz he was weak coz he made him promise he wud relieve him of all the suffering .....And for power imagine voldemort the guy who was supposedly immortal was freaking scared of him so that shud explain.

Jamie Afsa wrote: "Well i love them both but ill say Dumbledore... not interms of power but as a symbol ...A symbol of hope a symbol that gud still exists, i feel dumbledore is more like the ray of light which ppl lo..."

Dumbledore raised and army and sent a child to kill another human. Gandalf raised an army, single handedly slew a demon, and then sent a small adult to kill a demi-god. Nuff said.

Andrea Stephanie wrote: "Sita wrote: "Yeah Gandalf's origins are interesting, while Dumbledore is only human, one of the later races to evolve. I suspect that because they are both essentially "good" they would become firm..."

I agree. That is a valid point.

Andrea Stephanie wrote: "good point. I know J.K Rowling came up with Harry Potter because of a book she read as a child. In those books a child who has hair like harrys, and glasses like harrys, finds out he is a magican. ..."

I have not yet read LOTR, and am a little confused.I have read HP, and don't get how without Gandalf, there wouldn't be a Dumbledore.

Jamie You would probably get it if you read the lotr Andrea :p.

jamie : dumbledore sent harry, but who else wud take harry's place ..wasnt he the only one who cud voldemort ..wasnt he the seventh horcrux so u do realise that even dumbledore cud kill voldemort ...

besides i was refering more to dumbledore as a person somebody who thinks beyond emotions when it comes to doing wats right.

Wortmagie Gandalf.
The reason: Gandalf is more ruthless than Dumbledore. He does things because they need to be done, without thinking about friendliness or even humanity. If you rely on Gandalf, you can be sure that the job is done without compromises.
I don't want to say that I don't like Dumbledore and I really appreciate his wisdom, his calmness and his friendliness to every creature. But that's not what is demanded in a fight. A fight is always dirty and often not even fair.
I think Gandalf fulfills the requirements to win this fight much better.

message 72: by Ayah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ayah I just want to say if you have not read both LOTR and all the HP books then your comment on here is invalid

GANDALF would win in any fight but there is no need to insult Dumbledore. Dumbledore pretty much planned everthing then commits suicide be cause he feels he is no longer needed in this life.

But Gandalf is much more powerful then Dumbledore but as is Dumbledore.

message 73: by Ayah (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ayah Now Obi Wan vs Gandalf?

Jordan Gandalf.

message 75: by Paul (new) - rated it 5 stars

Paul Even though I support Gandalf I think there's a bias seeing as this a discussion on the Hobbit.

Jamie Ayah wrote: "Now Obi Wan vs Gandalf?"

Probably obi, the balance of technology is uneven. Gandalf vs Dumbledore is a fairer match because although Harry Potter is set in the modern world, wizzards don't really use modern stuff.

message 77: by Tony (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tony Triangle Gandalf the Grey or Gandalf the white would win... because it's Gandalf.

Scott Josephine wrote: "Not a fair matchup. Gandalf for sure. Gandalf is the benchmark against which most wizards are measured :) (except Merlin, which would be Gandalf's inspiration)."

Don't forget Odin.

Also this argument is absurd because all of HP's characters are pale reflections not fit to hold a candle to the masterworks of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien.

message 80: by J.R. (new) - rated it 5 stars

J.R. Barker Dumbledore had to leave all the hard stuff to a teenager, although he's capable of a "fight" he's more of a grandfather figure.
Gandalf battles demons for breakfast and conquered death. He is the kick butt grandad.
BUT both Dumbledore and Gandalf were tempted by power and did not take it, but it is part of the reason they could not fight their particular evils adequately.
Obi wan is the true hero, he did not attempt to seek power, he was a good mentor and didn't leave all the hard stuff to other people if he could help it. He also fought death, returning as a disembodied voice to guide his young padiwan.
Obi wan wins.

Rain Neil wrote: "Well, it will have to be Gandalf; he's the White Wizard of all Middle Earth. Dumbledore is just a head wizard of a school, and he was brought low, not by Voldermort, but by Severus Snape. While G..."

Dumbledore was brought down by no one but himself alone. He chose when to die. No one else was involved.

Peter Apart from the apples/oranges aspect I would vote for Gandalf.

A demigod by definition, an equal of Sauron. Versus Dumbledor a human. Fighting a demigod.

Probably more apt to consider Gandalf vs Harry. Same result - Gandalf.

Trawling through my mythology I can only see a few matches for Gandalf - Corum, both demigods; Oberon, king of the fairies; Woden, a god.

Here's one - Tom Bombadil. I doubt Gandalf would win a fight against Tom. IF he could get Tom to fight.

Felix LMAO!Reign wrote: "Remember that time Gandalf convinced the whole party to flee so that he could take out the Balrog by himself and not have to share any of the XP? Shows up later with fancy new robes and everything..."

Gandalf! No contest-He was basically a Avatar, while Dumbledore was not.

Kestral Young Reign wrote: "Gandalf, grey and white versions, would win. Hands down.
Dumbledore was killed in a fall from a tower.
Gandalf survived a tumble down a bottomless pit while fighting (and defeating) the Balrog.

Dumbledore was killed by a curse while on the top of the tower, because he arranged for Snape to kill him. He then fell because he was already dead.

Ellie Smith Gandalf could obliterate Dumbledore before breakfast. Gandalf always turns up and saves the day with a wave of his wand, Dumbledore dies because of a sixteen-year-old boy and a cursed ring [which is ironic since Gandalf is in The Lord Of The Rings].

Mithrandir

Linnea Dumbly has more personality than Gandalf, Gandalf would not wear bonnets, want socks for Christmas, or say, "Alas, earwax."

message 88: by [deleted user] (new)

I think they are matched in character, temperament, skills - they would properly have a cup of tea and smoke a pipe somewhere. Just saying.

Anna Clara Gandalf!!! :)

Hey, Sevvy had permission for the killing. Don't judge.

Yeah, exactly! Dumbledore planned ahead and used his brains to make sure Moldy Voldy couldn't get the Elder Wand. He was also known as the greatest wizard of all time.

Parker Linnea wrote: "Dria wrote: "Neil wrote: "Well, it will have to be Gandalf; he's the White Wizard of all Middle Earth. Dumbledore is just a head wizard of a school, and he was brought low, not by Voldermort, but ..."

Booyah!

Leslie Gandolf hands down.

OK, if Dumbledore was so smart and has such an unbeatable wand, then why was he so injured while getting the FAKE horcrux with Potter? Shouldn't his wand have protected him? He was so injured that he knew he was going to die and had Severus euthanize him. Instead of trusting Harry to defeat Voldemort in his own way and time, like Gandalf trusted Frodo, Dumbledore decides to knock out early for no real reason and not even tell anyone about his (almost) unbeatable wand. (Voldemort wield the unbeatable wand as well and was beat too)

Ok your turn LOL. This IS kinda fun.

Linnea Dria wrote: "Linnea wrote: "Dria wrote: "Neil wrote: "Well, it will have to be Gandalf; he's the White Wizard of all Middle Earth. Dumbledore is just a head wizard of a school, and he was brought low, not by V..."

Team Dumbledore, brains over brawn!

Linnea Neil wrote: "Linnea wrote: "Dria wrote: "Neil wrote: "Well, it will have to be Gandalf; he's the White Wizard of all Middle Earth. Dumbledore is just a head wizard of a school, and he was brought low, not by V..."

He's still human, and he sacrifices his life to make sure Voldemort doesn't get the Elder Wand. He leaves clues so they can figure out about the wand, which is unbeatable only if the wielder rightfully owns it. Technically Harry owned the wand when he defeated Voldemort.

Neil Astin Linnea wrote: "Neil wrote: "Linnea wrote: "Dria wrote: "Neil wrote: "Well, it will have to be Gandalf; he's the White Wizard of all Middle Earth. Dumbledore is just a head wizard of a school, and he was brought ..."

Here's what don't make sense. If Dumbledore had an unbeatable wand, then to keep it away from Voldemort is SIMPLY not to be beat. Why send Potter to do anything? Why go after horcruxes? If Voldemort shows his face, BAM!, hit him with the Elder wand. But Dumbledore gets beat by Voldermort's protection spell that was placed over a fake horcrux. Huh? Not very smart. Gandalf would never make that mistake. In fact the Elder wand makes Harry Potter totally irrelevant.

Linnea Why go after horcruxes? Are you serious? "BAM!"? The horcruxes, if you remember, are parts of Voldemort's soul, so if you just BAM!ed him, he would live in a horcrux until he regained power. SO...that wouldn't work. Why send Potter? Dumbledore is planning to die, so he needs someone to keep working to destroy horcruxes. Dumbledore technically had planned his death out beforehand, and the protection spell over the RING just shortened his time. After all he had to die eventually, and he needed to make sure that the Elder Wand stayed in good hands. As for whether Potter is relevant, remember that he is a horcrux, too, so he has to die in order to defeat Voldemort. As for the Elder Wand, Harry is the rightful owner of it, which makes him pretty relevant.

message 99: by Ari (new) - rated it 5 stars

Ari Gandalf can resurrect and Dumbledore has an unbeatable wand I think we just discovered the one fight that will last for all eternity besides, you know, God and Satan maybe.

Also what if Albus is Gandalf reincarnated.

message 100: by Peter (new) - rated it 4 stars

Peter Given that Gandalf is a Maia and exists in a different universe to Dumbledore, who is mortal, I doubt it.

Do you understand the characters? Their universes?
