Shaina (shainaeg) | 166 comments Many of the book picks seem to be very decisive. Some people love them and some people hate them. And while there are clearly no books that are universally loved, I'm wondering what S&L book choices were most loved by the most readers. I'm also curious what an individual's favorite picks were?

My personal favorites were Assassin's Apprentice, Old Man's War, and Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1).

*Sidenote, I only started following S&L about a year and a half ago so I haven't read a lot of the earlier picks.

Mpauli That's an interesting question. For me it would be A Game of Thrones, Leviathan Wakes and Old Man's War.

All of those ended up being 5 star rates for me.

Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth | 2218 comments I'm with you, Shaina, sidenote included. :D

Matthew Anderson | 60 comments I'd have to go with Old Man's War.

Sandi (sandikal) | 1212 comments Reamde, 1Q84, and The Windup Girl were my top three favorites.

terpkristin | 4407 comments I've been a member since the start, and couldn't remember everything. Luckily, I have a S&L bookshelf. These are the 5-star rated books on that shelf, in no particular order: Among Others, American Gods, A Game of Thrones, Ender's Game.

Kristina | 588 comments My favorite books I have read along with the club are (in no particular order): Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was, Leviathan Wakes, and I really enjoyed The Curse of Chalion.

Other books on the club list I read at one point or another that I gave 5 stars to are Ready Player One and both A Song of Ice and Fire books.

Of the ones I've read with the club Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) is my top rated, but Assassin's Apprentice is probably my favorite because I went on to read and love the next 8 elderling books and Ms. Hobb has become one of my favorite authors.

Phil | 1456 comments Hyperion , Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch , Ender's Game and The Moon is a Harsh Mistress
I read all of those before I joined the group but those are my favorites on the bookshelf.

David(LA,CA) (davidscharf) | 327 comments That I read at the same time as the club: Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was and Old Man's War

That I read at a different time from when the club did them: Ready Player One and Redshirts

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Some of my favorites have more to do with the discussion in the group, like 1Q84 and Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1).

And a personal favorite, that I didn't lem - Memoirs Found in a Bathtub. \o/

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments For me it would have to be 1Q84 and Ender's Game as those two are on the top four favorite books of all time.

It was because of the group read that I discovered 1Q84 and Haruki Murakami that quickly became my favorite book and one of my favorite author of all time.

message 14: by terpkristin (new)

terpkristin | 4407 comments I'm happy to see all the 1Q84 love. Though it didn't rate 5 stars, I'm thankful to this group for introducing me to Haruki Murakami.

Didn't you read the signs? Don't poke the all powerful Empress. You wouldn't like her when she's angry.

P. Aaron Potter (paaronpotter) | 585 comments Obviously, I have pretty strong personal attachment to Bridge of Birds, but I've been really happy with the breadth of this year's selections. Old-school-style space operas by newer authors, like Leviathan Wakes and Old Man's War give me renewed hope for the future of the genre, while reflective mash-ups like Ready Player One and Among Others are love-letters to its past.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I only joined in October so my list is rather short. Suppose I'll have to go with Old Man's War.

message 18: by Ty (new)

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 165 comments I joined in time to start the new year and am loving the choices to this point, of all those great books my favorite is Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was, with Old Man's War and Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) close behind.

message 19: by Geoff (new)

Geoff (geoffgreer) With the group: Old Man's War, Foundation and The Lies of Locke Lamora. I happened to be reading Locke Lamora and discovered that Sword & Laser was interviewing Scott Lynch as part of the wrap up episode. Been following the club ever since.

Outside the group: A Game of Thrones, Hyperion, Leviathan Wakes and Cloud Atlas. I really love when we get a poll to choose the book, because I like the opportunity to vote for books I've read in the past (GoT, LW, Hyp) so that others can discover them.

message 20: by John (new)

John (baloode) | 19 comments I know that Reamde was an alternate selection, but it was probably my favorite S&L reading experience. This was followed closely by The Magicians.

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

I've only been following along since Foundation but my favorite so far is Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1).

That being said, my most appreciated reads were The Dirty Streets of Heaven and Bridge of Birds: A Novel of an Ancient China That Never Was. Those both stick out as books that scored very high on the "I never would have pulled this off the shelf" scale.

American Gods is one of my favorite books of all time but I won't count it as I wasn't following S&L at the time.
