Did you enjoy Name of the Wind? - you got through it pretty quick!

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I did enjoy it I'm just hoping The Wise Man's Fear starts getting to the meat and potatoes . 1000 pages better start leading us into the epic adventure or whatever its going to be . I mean there is a reason to be an inn keeper living under an alias. Why the secrecy? Quite a few questions and not many answers upon completion of book 1.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments And also what us the deal with Denna is she just kvoths unicorn. What does she do. Where does she go.
If I ever write a fantasy series , which I won't, I would name my characters tom Jeff mike and Steve. Any one else tire of trying to spell and pronounce screwy fantasy names

message 1154: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I agree there were lots of unanswered questions but the story (within a story) isn't over yet. Yes the names in fantasy books can be a bit of a mouthful at times. I get why authors use them as Steve just isn't very fantastical or exotic.

message 1155: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I listened to the audiobook version and I can't remember how the narrator pronounced Kvoth. I think it was something like 'cloth', or clothe.

I think there could be a happy medium between the screwy fantasy names and "Steve" - Steverus, or Steevus.

Casceil | 2728 comments Re: unpronounceable names in fantasy books. The worst are the ones that use punctuation symbols as sounds that exist in the language of the fantasy world, but not in English. Weird names are at least a little easier to deal with if clues are given to pronunciation. For example, I cringed at the name "Myfanwy" in The Rook, but felt better upon being informed that it rhymed with "Tiffany."

message 1157: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments Ummm sorry, but Myfanwy is a well known Welsh name. Like Siobhan.

message 1158: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 13, 2013 08:22AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19205 comments I may have misunderstood you though. I'm not sure if you were making two different points there, or one.

How we pronounce it here, which I believe is the Welsh way is Miff-Fan-Way. Us Aussies could very obviously be wrong :)

I didn't think the narrator was bad but he wasn't the best choice for a fantasy novel in my opinion. Michael Page is among the best in that genre as you'll find with Locke Lamore.

Recently I listened to a fantasy book. Can't recall which one but had the usual mix of unique names and then there was something common like Jim or something. It was so out of place just horrible to the story.

message 1160: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments It was The Alloy of Law with main characters Waxillium and Wayne. Wayne

I like you're thinking Janice. It got me thinking of "fantasy" names for us (I must be bored!!!) I would be Seraphina or Saraia or Sarahna or something like that! ;-)

@Travis - yes Wayne does stand out a little as a bit "normal" when compared to Waxillium!

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I finished The Snow Child The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey for this month's group read. I thought this was a really enchanting read and I really enjoyed it. I did have a couple of small issues with it and for that reason I gave it 4 stars but I still highly recommend it.

I was a bit underwhelmed with the voice the narrator gave Kvoth. It just seemed a bit off to me, but not enough to give up listening to it. :)

Locke Lamore will be my first Michael Page book. I'm looking forward to it.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I read Poison Poison by Sarah Pinborough for the toppler. This was a 3 star book for me. It was a quick read and enjoyable enough but I don't think I would read it again.

I am now starting We Have Always Lived in the Castle We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson which is my first Shirley Jackson book.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I started Neverwhere for no reason, except that I have it on my real life bookshelf and want to get some of those books read before I get new ones for Christmas! And because I really want to read it, of course :)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Finished up my Scalziathon with Fuzzy Nation by John Scalzi then moved to Forced to Kill (Nathan McBride, #2) by Andrew Peterson now to A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens as I do so much love this story

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I finished with The Xibalba Murders and
Pies and Prejudice and starting Young Men and Fire for my ABC challenge after I listen to The Cricket on the Hearth - free from Audible.

message 1172: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Still on my Christmas kick finished A Christmas Carol moved on to A Christmas Story which I am thoroughly enjoying which surprised me as the movie I never cared for much. Its an audio book with sound effects which in this case makes the story better. Next up probably The Cricket on the Hearth

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I started listening to The Silence of Trees today and I'm about an hour in. So far, I'm mesmerized by the lyrical, poetic quality of the story. Add to the mix, Xe Sands ethereal narration and I'm hoping I'm in for an amazing read. I hope it remains this strong all the way through.

There are mentions of Rusalkas in this story, btw. :)

Terri (terrisa-uk) I just finished reading World After (which I won in a Goodreads giveaway! Yay!) and really enjoyed it.

I'm now trying to get myself in a Christmassy mood with Dash & Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan. I'm enjoying it ...

I seem to be on a bit of a YA spree at the moment!

message 1177: by Pam (new)

Pam Williams | 156 comments I'm also reading YA. The Book Thief for my adult book club and I'm rereading Divergent for an advisory board I'm on. I also look forward to seeing the films when I finish the books.

I'm reading La inspiración dormida. Regreso a los colores olvidados La inspiración dormida. Regreso a los colores olvidados by Silvia G. Guirado because the art is so pretty and I love the stories.

Aaaand I'm reading Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play, Vol. 13: Goddess Fushigi Yûgi The Mysterious Play, Vol. 13 Goddess by Yuu Watase because of the art and it's so romantic (and it's fast to read.)

Aaaaand I'm reading Divergent Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth because I saw the trailer for the movie and it looked pretty good.

Aaaand I'm reading Much Ado About Magic Much Ado About Magic (Enchanted, Inc., #5) by Shanna Swendson because it's cute and fluffy and I started the series and darn it I'm going to finish it!

Oh no. Sorry for the confusion. Just in name only (Rusalkii being Slavic/Russian mythology). I'm 1/2 Aussie and 1/2 English, but the Aussie part tends to take over.

I do very much want to visit that part of the world though. Sounds/looks incredibly interesting and beautiful.

message 1187: by Tasha (new)

Tasha Got it. Yep, when I fist saw your name I thought for sure you had some slavic influence and then with that comment above, I thought you def did. :)

You have cool myths.

I've started my final alphabet book. Zulu Hart (which I managed to reserve in large print, for some unknown reason) looks pretty good based on the first chapter. And I've got a whole 10 days to finish it - easy peasy >:-)

I'm at Zee as well. However Zeno's Conscience is just too intimidating for me!

I've ordered something more "fluffy" from the library.

(Just so I can bite my fingernails while waiting 'til the last minute. More exciting that way.☻)

I got myself in trouble a while back, I believe over "you lot".
