Welcome Micheal, and bless your zombie loving heart.
I have yet to see a posting etiquette link any where on goodreads.
The site has Terms of Service (TOS) which you can find at the bottom of the page when you click the word "terms". But more often then not those are strickly guidelines which are usually not enforced well (just my stick on that).
Many groups have rules, which are layed out in their group description page info link.
But this group has Zero rules posted. Which is why when I am asked to stay on topic, I chuckle to myself... cause it's not in ANY rules, but the ones that we make up for ourselves :P
But I have digressed yet again.
If you should find a post on "posting etiquette" please re-post that link here so that I can see it.
Again, Welcome!

The group has only recently gotten new Mods after being all disorganized for a while, so we're still figuring out effective systems and rules etc. So some boards and topics have posted guidelines, and some don't. We're getting there, slowly but surely. Other topics are fairly self-evident, and we try to keep those on-topic - like the free books topics, voting for group reads etc. The Mods aren't able to shift around posts like in some forums, other than deleting, so we can't divert digressions and side conversations to a different topic effectively. Self-promotion posts need to be kept in the appropriate forum, and are limited to one topic. Not one post, but one topic. Lastly - this is an all-ages forum, so posts should be kept reasonably PG.

Welcome to the group!

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Good morning my fellow zombie lovers,
This particular thread has no topic (back me on this Mod E)
And so I thought I'd stir up some chatter and ask you all what are your plans for the day? Got work to head off to? Got a book thats itching to read? Dogs to feed? And editor to please?
Can you spare a minute of two and share with us a little a bit about your life today.
Shortly I'll be off to help a friend clean out her guest room.
I am also turning in a crochet baby dress that I finally finished last night.
I have three R4R going on (two for the same author) that I'll be stumbling my way through tonight and probably tomorrow.
So what are your plans for the day?

Totally. Random it all up.

I got to spend a little while in the hardware store today, which always makes me happy. A couple of weeks ago we bought a 30 year old tent trailer that needs some cosmetic work, so I was happily picking paint and choosing hardware. Good times. It's a holiday here in Canada, so it's been a slow day.
Next I have to make supper, which I've totally been avoiding. Maybe Hubby wants to do it instead.
I'm reading Camp 417 Episode One right now, almost done - not sure what's up next. I have reviews to write, as I'm *trying* to write a review for everything I read. It's not going as well as I'd hoped... the next book yells louder than the next review..

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Elizabeth wrote: "... I have reviews to write, as I'm *trying* to write a review for everything I read. It's not going as well as I'd hoped... the next book yells louder than the next review..."

When it was time to set our reading goals for this calendar year here on goodreads, I kept in mind just how difficult it was to write all the reviews that I did last year before I made my goal.
Reading a book is not the difficult part, its far easier then writing a thoughtful review.
I have many friends who have chosen to not write reviews for their goodreads challenges but to simply rate the book.
A rating without a review is pointless. If you say its five stars but do not say how you came to that conclusion then you might as well have closed your eyes and randomly pointed at (and clicked) a rating.
I get so annoyed when I see ratings with no review content... Grrr!!! to all those raters.
I am going to take a moment to show you all the crochet baby dress that I just completed. Why you ask? because crocheting is what I DO while I read your zombie books.
I call this dress Lemon Meringue because the pie inspired my choice of colors, the dress and apron concept (double layered), and the decorations.
description This is both the dress and the apron together front view.

Neil, Sleep well.
Ian, You are one busy man. Good luck with the articles, I enjoy reading them. But I am not a facebooker. I find your articles off your author page.
April, Happy Mailing. I avoid the post office whenever I can as the lines are horrible. I usually use the UPS substation by my house. They accept US postal mail, have friendlier (happier) staff, are open longer hours and there is seldom any long lines.
Lisa, shopping is simply horrible for me, unless its at a craft store.
The way that Elizabeth said she enjoyed the hardware store is the way that I enjoy the craft stores. :D I am on all of their frequent shoppers mailing list and get their email sale alerts, coupons and such.
Just typing to you all about my craft store shopping just thrills me. :P
Susan, I too can not wait for school to start up, so can go to the park up the street without all the young ... children. :) I prefer doing my daily walks in the park but in the summer months, I use the bike trails near my place to avoid the energetic young souls. :)
Elizabeth, what did your husband make for dinner? and are there left overs?

Beautiful crochet! I knit, but not well. Most of my friends are crafters, but I seem to be more of a dabbler. Maybe because my Army wife status keeps me fixing cupboards and drywalling LOL

Hubby is making a pork roast, but I'm pretty sure he just threw the meat in a pot. No sign of side dishes at this point... We might be going back to basics tonight :)

message 181: by Tammy K. (new)

Tammy K. (rambles_of_a_reader) Thank you everyone :)
My cheeks are red with embarrassment.
I learned to crochet in 2009, at the tender age of .. Grandmother.
A couple of the ladies from the hospitals auxiliary started to teach me one Thursday morning after hearing me complain that I was tired of embroidery.
Bless their hearts. They all had good intentions but most of them had been doing it so long that they had no idea where to begin to teach me.
That evening I looked up crochet on youtube.
OMG ladies and gentlemen there are so many tutorials on everything from how to hold a crochet hook, what kinds of threads are used in different projects, how to do different stitches, and how to make all kinds of items.
And that is how I learned folks. I watched youtube tutorial videos. Paused and replayed over and over again until I caught on to whatever it was they were trying to show me.
When I went back on the following Thursday, I showed the ladies my progressed. They were amazed and of course took turns taking credit for teaching me :) I love those gals.
When I was 18 months into crocheting, the auxiliary ladies pressured me into putting a couple items into our local fair for competition. They said it would be confidence builder.
I entered two items, a blanket that I made for my oldest granddaughter and a doily. Both items received blue ribbons. Needless to say that hooked me big time into crochet. (pun intended)
Since then I have learned to needle tat, also off youtube tutorial videos.
It's now 4 years later, I feel confident in my skills but I will tell you, those old ladies at the hospital auxiliary are the cream of the crop with their work.
They never let me get away with sloppy work, and the chide each other for loose tails, missed stitches and the lack of decorative details.
I am one of the baby's at 45 years of age, the majority of them are in their 70's and up. We have three that are in their middle to late 90's.
They amaze and inspire me.
So if you are sitting on the fence about learning to crochet or any other craft.. YouTube it!

message 182: by Susan (new)

Susan Alvarado | 47 comments I've been crocheting since I was 3. My grandmother taught me. Got me a skein of yarn and showed me how to make a chain. When I finished the skein, she told me to tAke it all apart and make a ball out of the yarn. Then it was time to crochet the chain again. One way to keep the little ones busy. :)

Anyone made any apocalypse-related crafts? One of my dear friends is making me a Waldorf doll - Zombie style LOL
Years ago, when I was a young lass and still hasn't developed much tact, a friend proudly showed me the chain mail he had been crafting for several months. He was unimpressed when I grabbed my knitting needles and knit up the same length in about 20 minutes. Whoops...

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 352 comments Dear Lord! What kind of monster did I create here? Zombies, people, ZOMBIES! Not lace nighties! LOL.

But seriously, it is great to come home and see people chatting and active. Thought I would tie it back in to what I was thinking when I started the thread though...

We share links to a lot of free zombie book downloads, but rarely get a chance to discuss the ones we read. For example, I recently downloaded and read Until the End of the World and I enjoyed it. It kept me interested and entertained. It's a lot different than the zombie books I write, but that's one reason I liked it. :)

BTW, today I painted my trailer. I've brought it from the 80s to the 90s.

Hi Anton. I love "I am Legend" too, but Matheson described them as vampires - not zombies. Nonetheless, his story is seen as groundbreaking for the genre. Romero said it was a big influence for Night of the Living Dead. And of course it was the basis for some great movies, such as Vincent Price in the The Last Man on Earth and Charlton Heston in Omega Man. It's a shame that Matheson passed away recently. I bought a kindle copy of I am Legend as soon as I heard the news.

message 195: by Anton (new)

Anton (antontroia) | 59 comments I loved The Omega man and The Last Man on Earth. Both were better adaptations than the Will Smith movie, even though, the newest remake shared the same title.

It's funny, Matheson labeled them vampires, but they were very zombie like. At least, some of them were.

message 196: by David P (new)

David P Forsyth (daidpforsyth) | 352 comments Anton wrote: "It's funny, Matheson labeled them vampires, but they were very zombie like. At least, some of them were..."

Yes and no. I actually had this discussion recently. Matheson's vampires talk. "Come out Nevil!" And they think. They even plot to deceive and survive, thinking of themselves as the next stage of evolution.

Zombies, in contrast (and in general), are pure killing machines. They are either truly "undead" (reanimated corpses) or suffering from a virus so potent that it wipes out virtually higher brain function and triggers only the most rudimentary urges to hunt and eat.

The difference is more than clinical, if somewhat academic, because it determines the audience perception of the "monsters" and the protagonists' attitude towards them. Zombies are cool to kill because the audience understands that they are no longer human. The gratuitous violence becomes entertaining, since nobody cares about the zombies (at least not after they turn into one). Matheson's "vampires" are little different. Is Nevil justified in hunting them down and sticking stakes in their hearts everyday? Or not?

message 197: by Anton (last edited Aug 07, 2013 12:45AM) (new)

Anton (antontroia) | 59 comments Oh I'm aware of the differences. Many people painted Neville as the villain in that story. He wasn't the most likeable protagonist. In the Omega Man, Neville had a degree of villainy to him, and the Vampires weren't as flawed.
