The Voyage Of Qv66 looks spot-on - I'm thinking we had a remarkably quick solve, and I'm adding this to my shelves to read!

Age-range: Possibly 10-16?
Author: No idea, but I think I remember it being near A/B/C of the library bookshelves
Plot: England has been flooded, far into the future, and all the humans had disappeared/died out. A group of animals band together to help the main character, a smart ape called 'Darwin'? discover what sort of animal he is, as they have never seen anything like him before. They head to London on a canal boat (?) to go to the Natural History Museum, where they find out that he is an ape.
Characters: A group of animals, no humans. There was an ape, the main character, possibly by the name of Darwin, a pigeon called 'Pidge', and then other farm animals, including a sheep/horse/pig/cow? But I can't quite remember.
Setting: England, set in the future. Later on the Natural History Museum in London.
Book cover: It was quite bright, possibly all the animals on a boat with green fields around, or a flooded landscape
Title: Possibly something along the lines of 'Darwin' or 'Voyage of the Beagle' or the like, not sure...
