YA Reading Challenge #1: Tasks & Discussion

The main character is 12. So I'll leave it on my list. Thanks for your support. I'm gonna "just do it"!!
Loving the challenge, by the way! It's the first one I've participated in and it's been fun reading books I typically wouldn't. And an added bonus is reading books I can pass on to my daughter.

Yes, do that! I had a few friend's moms' when I was a kid who would talk to me about books, and even though their daughters looked at us through rolling eyes, I loved it.

I just finished Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets for task 20.3. It takes place in England and that's a country that I'm dying to visit. Especially since my sister moved over there about a year ago (she's not English, but her husband is). I'll probably end up vacationing there next year. Anyway, while re-reading the Harry Potter series, I've come to realize that I like Chamber of Secrets a bit more than the Sorcerer's Stone. It's darker which I like plus it has Gilderoy Lockhart in it and I think he's hilarious albeit a tad bit annoying.

I thought that both books were very well written, and both very deserving of their awards. I am really glad that I read each of them. I wasn't really looking forward to A Wrinkle in Time. I didn't really think that I would like it much. But, I loved it. I am looking forward to picking up the other novels in the Time Sequence now. Both were definitely worth reading.

I just finished Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban for task 5.3 which was re-read a book that you enjoyed when you were younger. I chose Prisoner of Azkaban because although it is not my favorite from the HP franchise, it was the first one that I read that I had no clue what was going to happen. I read the Sorcerer's Stone about two months after seeing the movie. I also read the Chamber of Secrets a couple of months after finishing the movie. I didn't want to read Prisoner of Azkaban first because I thought it would ruin the movies, but then I said "Screw it! The books are better" and read it. So, there was definitely a level of suspense that wasn't there in the first two books.
Anyway, 320 points and 8,179 pages so far.

I agree with Kristen, it was a pretty good movie version. I've only read the 1st book, but I really liked it.

Anyway, finished reading a book called Belle on my copy, Belle and the Beau through GR. Fairly awful. My review is here.

I just finished Donorboy for task 5.4 and I really liked it. I thought it was going to be uber-depressing because of the subject matter (a teenage girl has to deal with the deaths of her two mothers and go live with her donor father whom she's never met), but it was surprisingly funny. I was endeared to most of the characters.

I just finished reading The Tale of Despereaux for task 10.4 and I loved it! I thought it was just a cute, charming, little story. It was everything a children's book should be. I especially loved how the author would often talk to the reader. It makes you feel more included.
Anyway, 325 points and 8,675 pages so far.

It's there. You have to scroll down to where the reviews start. The only way I could take you directly to my review would be to link you with my page, and then you'd be able to edit my review, which obviously I don't want. :)
Or I suppose you can go directly through my shelf, search Belle and the Beau and click view review.

I'm about half way through To Kill A Mockingbird (reread) myself. Isn't it wonderful? I just love that book!

I don't have any new points, but I just wanted to recommend Wolf Tower The Claidi Journals I, which was 1 of the books I picked randomly. I never would have read it otherwise, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was a fun read and kept me guessing! I'll probably have to read the other 3 books in the series now.

I just finished A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith for task 5.2. I almost gave up on this book a couple of times, but since it was for a challenge, I didn't. I'm really glad I stuck with it because I ended up loving it. After about 150 pages, I started getting into it and caring more about the characters. It also made me tear-up a couple of times (but maybe I'm just being overly sensitive).
Anyway, 350 points and 9,839 pages read. And with that I am finished with the YA challenge! I'm so glad that I participated in this. I really didn't think that I was going to make it since I really have trouble sticking to a list of books to read for a certain time and so I tend to rebel against it (hence why I didn't finish the Spring Challenge at TNBBC, towards the end I just said "Screw it"). But I had such a blast with it and read a ton of great books. So thanks Laura for creating this challenge and thanks Fiona for creating this group! Now, I'm off to read a couple of my "adult books". They've been feeling a tad bit ignored.

Thanks for sharing, Alisha! I really liked Stardust, too. Although it's been quite a few years since I read it. I added The Forest of Hands and Teeth to my TBR list. Sounds like quite the book!

I don't care if win, I just really want to finish! Bummed! I was doing really well in May but slowed down considerably in June. Anyways, enough crying from me.... I'm off to read The Graveyard Book.

Bad news... I am having problems with my eyes and my husband says no more reading until I see the eye doctor!! :( I mean, I guess I don't want to make it worse, but what a bummer! I was actually getting close to where I wanted to be in order to finish the challenge, but now it doesn't look like a possibility. I am going to call the doctor's office today and see when the soonest I can come in... :(

Hopefully your doc will get you fixed up quick! Maybe your library will have a large selection of audio until your eyes clear up. Wishing you well....
Now that's an idea! I will look into it! :D thanks for brightening up my day!

Awesome! I wonder if my employer will allow me to listen to books while I work... I usually have the radio on anyway.
