Rebecca (rebeccasg) Welcome team Purple Mountain's Majesty!

July To-Be-Read (TBR) Challenge

Have any books you've been wanting to read, but somehow never seem to get around to reading them? Well here is a little push to cross some books off of you "TBR" list.

So brush the dust off those neglected books because.....We captains challenge YOU, Purple Mountain's Majesty to read as many books that have been sitting on your shelf.

Challenge: Read books that have been on your TBR/want-to-read (goodreads or "mental") list for more than a year. If you don't know how long they've been there, you can use your goodreads shelf or take an educated guess. (Use books that have been published over a year ago). This is an inner-team challenge.

Bonus Challenge Try to read a book published in various years in the past. This will help you eliminate some older books that have been sitting around for a while! Lets see how many years you can cover!

Duration July 1 - July 31, 2013
Note: Books finished in July will count, even if they were started in June.

This is for fun so we've not going to grill you about how long you've wanted to read a book, but feel free to add how long you've had the book / wanted to read it!

Possible Template
Year Pub: Book - Date finished - Approximate time on "TBR" shelf

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Everyone who wants to participate - Please reserve yourself a spot at the beginning of this challenge where you can update your "Read log" for this challenge. That way it will be easy to see how everyone is doing.

Note - to do this just make a post that you can update whenever you've read a book.

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Rebecca's TBR Challenge

Most of these books have been on my bookshelf or my mental TBR shelf for a long time. I just started adding books to my Goodreads TBR late in 2011.

2007: Burning Bright by Tracy Chevalier - read 7/3/13 - TBR 12/11, but I've wanted to read it every since I finished The Girl With The Pearl Earring
1953: A Pocket Full of Rye by Agatha Christie - read 7/4/13 - wanted to read this since my first Agatha Christie book that I read in 2003
2011: The Family Fang by Kevin Wilson - read 7/5/13 - TBR 2/2/12 - I read about this book in a magazine and immediately put it on my TBR
2011: Mozart's Last Aria by Matt Rees - read 7/10/13 - TBR 12/9/11 - I have this on both audiobook AND my kindle, so it's nice to finish it!
2012: The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman by M.L. Stedman - read 7/15/13 - TBR 12/4/12 - Though this book wasn't published very long ago, I've had it on the top of my "to be read NEXT" pile for a while now (since Dec), but it kept getting pushed back by books for other challenges. So glad I read it!
2001 O is for Outlaw (Kinsey Millhone, #15) by Sue Grafton by Sue Grafton - read 7/23/13 - TBR 12/2011 - I started this series maybe 10 years back and I have been slowly working my way through it. I love these books and I'm trying to make them last as long as possible.

Nancy Nancy's TBR Challenge:

2004 - Sleeping Beauty by Phillip Margolin (7/4/13) Has probably been on my shelf since 2004! Got it when I joined The Mystery Book Guild way back when!

2004- Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum (7/21/13) Got this from paperbackswap several years ago and it's been on my shelf since!

2004 - Waking Beauty A Novel by Elyse Friedman (7/27/13) Not sure how long this one has been on my bookshelf for, but at least over 5 years!

2010- Bloodroot by Amy Greene (7/14/13) I got this one from a friend probably 2 years ago or so. Soooo glad to get it off my shelf!

Reed (reedraab) I have a slew of books on my shelves at home that have a nice layer of dust on them...I'm in!

Reed's TBR Challenge

1. Beautiful Darkness (Caster Chronicles, #2) by Kami Garcia Read 7/11/2013, my fellow commuter, James, was after me forever to read this series but I knew on 2/10/2013 when I finished the first installment I wanted to see what happened next.

2. The Teahouse Fire by Ellis Avery Read 7/29/2013, this popped up as one of my advertisements here on Goodreads about two months ago and it looked like something I would enjoy so it was the most recent add to my To Read shelf.

message 17: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments I started my first book in the wee hours of the morning as I was getting ready for bed: Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward . I've been meaning to try this series for a few years now.

message 18: by Nancy (new)

Nancy @ Lara - I've read the first two in the series and have really enjoyed them.....and I'm not a huge vampire fan!

message 19: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Just finished 12th of Never (Women's Murder Club, #12) by James Patterson this morning because it was due back at the library today. Trying to decide which book to pick off my shelf to read. I have to continue reading Fly Away by Kristin Hannah since that's due back soon too!

message 20: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments @Nancy, so far it's pretty intense, and a bit over-the-top. But, that last part makes it fun.

message 21: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments I finished my first TBR book: The Sea of Monsters (Percy Jackson and the Olympians, #2) by Rick Riordan

message 22: by Jodi (new)

Jodi Saylor | 44 comments I am sorry to say I have yet to start... Have not been feeling well enough to read, but have been thing about where to start.

I have only been with good reads since Oct 2012 so that is where my TBR starts so I will reads books starting there or with a published date later then that if that is okay?

message 23: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments Jodi, do you have some books you've been wanting to read for a while but have not gotten too? Those count as well.

message 24: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments I finished two more books: Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward and The Grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer . They couldn't be more different, but I've been planning to read both for a while now.

message 25: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Jodi - this is a pretty lose challenge; just for fun and to motivate people to read books they've been putting off. You can read any books you have on your "real life" TBR. I would say anything published before 2013 will count.

message 26: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) @Lara - could you make a post here that lists all the books you've read for the challenge, and update it each time you read a book. Easier to keep track of :)

You can still post everytime you read one, but it's just helpful to have 1 post that includes everything.

Sure thing. Do you want me to go back and add to a previous post, or start a new one?

message 28: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) @Lara - doesn't matter, totally up to you. A new one will probably still stay on the first page, which works for me!

Lara | 119 comments How are we doing in the challenge so far? Or are there no updates yet for this one?

message 31: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) This challenge is just an inner-team challenge (sorry if I didn't explain that before) so it kinda of just for fun and to compete against your team mates. I'll try go update the "leaderboard" today sometime.

The captains just wanted to do a TBR challenge to help everyone work on their TBR shelves and read whatever you want!

message 32: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments That works. I have a very long to-read list, and tons of books and ebooks I haven't gotten to yet. I'm enjoying getting to some that always look attractive but I haven't started yet.

message 33: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Me too! I have so many books that have been on the top of my list to read next, but I end up reading other things for challenges or someone else suggests a book for me, that it takes forever to get around to them. That's why I was so excited to have a TBR challenge.

message 34: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyhelen) I'll start a new post and keep adding to this although I am not sure how many I'll manage this month. But the challenge has made me go and borrow a book which has been on my Goodreads TBR pile since 2008 from the library!

I finished Flowers for the Judge (Albert Campion Mystery #7) by Margery Allingham last night. It's probably also been on my mental TBR shelf since 2008.

message 35: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) I finished Mozart's Last Aria, which was just okay and I've had as an audiobook AND on my nook/kindle for a while.

message 36: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments It so disappointing when I finally get to a book I've been planning to read for years and it's only okay. I had a few of those earlier this year, and expect I'll have quite a few more in the future.

message 37: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Exactly! Luckily this one didn't take me that long to read, but it's so disappointing when that happens. Especially because I feel like I've had it for a while so I feel like I need to just finish it, but don't like it.

message 38: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments Well, I just finished a longer book that took me most of the week to read (>600pp). It was just released, but I've had it on my TBR list for well over a year as it was the final book in a trilogy that I really like. I would say love, but this book lacked the finish of the previous two.
Cold Steel (The Spiritwalker Trilogy #3) by Kate Elliott

message 39: by Jodi (new)

Jodi Saylor | 44 comments Got some books off my TBR shelf... And your right it feels so good!

The Shadowy Horses by Susanna Kearsley

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

Storybound (Storybound #1) by Marissa Burt

message 40: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Just finished Bloodroot by Amy Greene for the TBR challenge. It took me forever to get it finished....was painfully slow. I was doing a buddy read w/ the friend who gave it to me, otherwise I'm pretty sure I would have chucked it!

message 41: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) Just finished The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman which was amazing. So emotion (which I knew it would be and part of the reason I kept pushing it back), but so good! Need a lighter book next.

message 42: by Jodi (new)

Jodi Saylor | 44 comments Rebecca, I loved that book! One of my favs last year... still think about it every once in awhile!

message 43: by Jodi (new)

Jodi Saylor | 44 comments Nancy, I cant stand books like that. You get to the point you dont even want to read it, but yet you want to put it behind you so you can go on to the next book!

message 44: by Lara (new)

Lara | 119 comments Well, I've finished another book I've been meaning to read for a while. The library had it and its sequel on the new release shelf (even though the sequel came out last year), so I picked them up.

Right now I'm having a hard time focusing on any of the books I've started, but began Lean In Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg today and am really enjoying it so far.

message 45: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Finished Those Who Save Us by Jenna Blum . Got it from paperbackswap several years ago and finally decided to read it for this challenge. So glad I did. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed it!

message 46: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (rebeccasg) @Nancy - I've heard such good things about that book. My mom owns it and I keep meaning to borrow it to read. One day....so many books so little time

message 47: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I finished Waking Beauty A Novel by Elyse Friedman yesterday. I don't even remember where I got the book but it's been on my shelf for what seems like forever.

That's probably my last book read for the July TBR challenge!
