Cassie I'm reading Graceling, and loving it :)

On Audio I'm listening to The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl. I'm not sold on this one and may quit unless someone advises against it...

Cheryl (cherylllr) My son recently discovered Philip Reeve and just finished Fever Crumb and said I'd like it. Wish me luck, as his taste and mine do not coincide well! :)

This is in my pile to read soon. We watched a lot of Jane Austin and Bronte films when I was a kid and this was one of my favorite stories. It has taken me until adulthood to finally read some of the books! I'd be interested to hear what you think of it once you finish.

message 2854: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm finishing up Matched (which wasn't what I expected) and have no clue what's next. Gotta check my library stack.

Madeline | 89 comments Cassie, collaborations can be fun. I don't think distance is a factor, just finding the time and committing! :)

message 2857: by Cassie (new)

Cassie Madeline, agreed! Well, if I ever put enough ideas together I may be in touch ;)

message 2858: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading Angel: After the Fall, Volume 1 since I"m such a Buffy fan (from back in the day). The graphic novel is interesting, but still not my cup of tea. But great pictures!

Brittany | 35 comments I'm reading The Ring of Solomon by Jonathan Stroud. Very good so far.

I need to read this. I've read much of the Buffy Season 8. It's not bad, but not great either.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1332 comments I couldn't find this thread for a bit.

I just finished Between Shades of Gray and gave it 5 stars!!!! It comes out March 2011 and my husband found an ARC of it.

I am now finally getting to Island of the Blue Dolphins. Will let you know what I think!!

message 2863: by Amy (new)

Amy It's a quick read Cassie. There are several volumes. I"m definitely going to read the others. This one took me a couple of hours to get through (on and off). Interesting pictures.

I am reading Generation Dead which apparently is about zombies.

message 2864: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Fever Crumb and No Such Thing As Dragons were both light, fun reads. Very different, both stand-alone. But, in case you want to know, Fever Crumb is also kind of prequel to Mortal Engines, which my son also enjoyed.

I think I'm going back to Discworld next, to The Last Continent, and then I'm going to try The Invention of Everything Else.

You have me worried there, Heather. I've read: Poison Study and Magic Study but I can't find them anywhere in my library. Mysterious. Have we got book eating mice?

message 2868: by Madeline (new)

Madeline | 89 comments I just picked up Rosemary and Rue, I don't think it's YA.. seems more like paranormal mystery? to me. It has potential so far.

message 2869: by Amy (new)

Amy I'm reading Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins. Had to take a break from the zombies and vampires.

message 2883: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Lawrence (wendylawrence) | 21 comments Just finished The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm by Nancy Farmer. I LOVED it! Why did it take me so long to read another one of hers (I read The House of the Scorpion years ago (many times with a science class of 7th graders) and loved that one. Must read more of her! Any suggestions on the next one I should pick?

message 2884: by Kellyflower (new)

Kellyflower | 136 comments I picked up How It Ends by Laura Wiess last night , thinking I'd read a chapter and see if it's some thing that would hold my attention.....well, I couldn't put it down. before I knew it, it was 3 am!
What took me so long to read this book?

message 2885: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I started reading The Golden Compass and Ballad: A Gathering of Faerie again. I put Ballad down about a year ago. I think I was burned out on the Faerie/Fae theme. I am more accepting this time around. I had deserted 'The Golden Compass' in order to read new books from other favored authers. I am enjoying both books.

They're both wonderful books, Paula. Although I have my doubts about reading them in parallel. They both grip you in different ways. I'd be intrigued to see if they get in a battle with each other :-)

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) | 265 comments Amy wrote: "Are you reading the whole series?"

I'm just reading this one for now. I only have up to book six.

Paula (pauldajo) Alan wrote: "They're both wonderful books, Paula. Although I have my doubts about reading them in parallel. They both grip you in different ways. I'd be intrigued to see if they get in a battle with each other :-)"

I'm almost half way through 'The Golden Compass' and only around 30 pages into 'Ballad'. I do have to say the 'The Golden Compass' is the superior book. The characters are very well written, so that I get a clear picture of their personalities. The story is complicated enough to keep my interest, but doesn't drag me down with incidentals and isn't overly descriptive. I really like and feel sorry for Lyra. She's been taxed with too much for such a young child.

Now that's not to say I dislike 'Ballad'. A comparison between the two is more like a apples and oranges situation. James' story makes me a little sad also. I hope James has happier times.

message 2891: by Amy (new)

Amy With the Darren Shan series, I read all the way through cause I was wanting to see how the series ends. There is also another book that is about Larten Crepsley's life.

Alan (alanmccluskey) Paula wrote: "Alan wrote: "They're both wonderful books, Paula. Although I have my doubts about reading them in parallel. They both grip you in different ways. I'd be intrigued to see if they get in a battle wit..."

It's not a very fair confrontation, as you say. You can't pit a story about fairies against an epic battle between good and evil and the primal love affair. That was my concern when I saw you were reading both together.

Eden Silverfox (tsalagi_writer) | 265 comments Amy wrote: "With the Darren Shan series, I read all the way through cause I was wanting to see how the series ends. There is also another book that is about Larten Crepsley's life."

I could probably read the whole series right away. But, I'll just take my time with it. I'd like to buy the rest of the books first and I'm hoping my library still has them for sale.

And after I finish them, I know I will read the Larten Crepsley books. I was really excited when I found about the books.

I'm very interested in reading the Golden Compass. After reading Graceling, I'm longing for more fantasy. Right now I'm reading Northanger Abbey, though.

message 2895: by Amy (new)

Amy There's more than one Larten book? If so, not sure I want to start the first. While I enjoyed the Shan series, I thought it was way too many books.

I think there is going to be at least four books about Larten. The second book is coming out in April.

Jamilla (jamilla76) | 6 comments I am reading I am number 4. I know there is some controversy surrounding this book, but it is a good book. Sorry I haven't really participated this month, but I had a flood in my classroom and lost over 4000 dollars worth of my own books. I Am Number Four

message 2898: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh gosh Jamilla, that's awful!

message 2899: by Amy (new)

Amy I just marked I Am Number Four to read. Apparently there's a movie too. I haven't heard about any controversy though. Why?

I loved I Am Number Four - thinking about checking out the movie when it comes out next week as well!
