Although there is a brilliance and a wit to J.K. Rowling's Potter books, which I enjoyed immensely, they don't have the same depth both of thought and of feeling that the Pullman trilogy has. So Pullman is a slightly more difficult read. But it is really worth the extra effort. To be honest though, I was so caught up in the story that it didn't seem like an effort at all.
Alan - I actually read Pullman's books before I read Harry Potter. They really are very different reads. And as I said I really loved the first two. And though I read and enjoyed the whole series (I read them straight through without really stopping) and didn't have issue with Pullman wanting to make a statement against institutions and religion, I still thought book 3 went in some weird direction. Pullman's writing is very different from Rowling and I can see that some might not like it because it is more complex. But I certainly appreciated the complexity despite feeling like the ending was just strange.
I originally read them on recommendation from my brother (who also suggested Ender's game). He usually has really good suggestions. I really enjoyed the series, even though it is quite dark at times. I think with Pullman's series, there's more hidden meanings within the story that relates to real life, more so than Harry Potter.

I don't understand what he was trying to do. I've seen videos where he defends the book against virulent attacks ... but the writing and the story are strange. I thought it might have been a book written to fulfil a command as if his heart were not in it, but having heard him talk about the book, that can't be right.

The whole world conspired to make their love for each other impossible leaving us in a universe suffused with a yearning that hurts and moves and nourishes at the same time.
Alan I would love to continue this discussion. Do you know if therefor already a discussion thread for Pullman's books. Don't want to hi-jack this thread. But still have some questions about the ending.

I just started The Keepers' Tattoo and the author wastes no time in getting on to the action, no boring stuff from this author (so far, of course I am only on chapter 2). I think I'll like it. . .
Just began The Hunger Games I'd been holding it off, dunno why. Not wanting to begin, but like Ayra, I was immediately whisked away by the story...
Oh The Hunger Games is one of my all time favorite books (right up there with Count of Monte Cristo and Harry Potter 6!) Hope you enjoy it as much as I did Alan!
Arya wrote: "Oh The Hunger Games is one of my all time favorite books (right up there with Count of Monte Cristo and Harry Potter 6!) Hope you enjoy it as much as I did Alan!"Thanks Ayra. Not so far into it yet (pg 65) but already hooked and looking for every occasion to read on. Not so easy as I've just begun my own fifth novel and that is time consuming.
I'm reading The Dead and the Gone which is the third installment, told from Alex's perspective. It's interesting reading someone else's take of the events that happened in the first book. This book also follows the "day or journal type" format so it makes it easier to read.
Arya wrote: "Oh The Hunger Games is one of my all time favorite books (right up there with Count of Monte Cristo and Harry Potter 6!) In fact she liked it so much that she said if I bought her the sequels she'd read them in English!!
I finished listening to The Red Pyramid. I enjoyed the story. There was a lot of Eygptian deities and the like. This could be a stand alone book, but I think it's going to be a series. I don't know if I would have enjoyed the book as much if I were reading it. Though Sadie's attitude was a bit too much in audio.I continue to read The Magician which is a fast read. I'm just reading it very slowly. I don't really care for the book, but it's not a bad story. There is something missing and the book could have 100 fewer pages and tell the story just fine. It's YA, so the proper critics would be the teenagers. Actually this book is probably written for pre teens. I bet they love it.
I am also reading I Shall Wear Midnight. I like the Tiffany Aching series.

Oh dear! I think I've caught The Hunger Games bug and can't put the book down! Is there an antidote?

Alan wrote: "Oh dear! I think I've caught The Hunger Games bug and can't put the book down! Is there an antidote?"No antidote. Even when you have finished the entire series, you'll be talking about it everywhere you go.
Nope, you will just have to finish it - and it doesn't end there, better go out and buy the other two so you will have them on hand as soon as you finish The Hunger Games!!!

Finished it and definitely not as good as Going Too Far. What happened? It had so much promise!
Roshini wrote: "Finished it and definitely not as good as Going Too Far. What happened? It had so much promise! ..."Makes me wonder if this book was just written to fill a some contract or something. It really bothers me that this books was so bad. I really liked Jennifer Echol's Going Too Far & The Boys Next Door, but Forget You & Endless Summer left a bad taste in my mouth.
Alan wrote: "Oh dear! I think I've caught The Hunger Games bug and can't put the book down! Is there an antidote?"Reading books 2 & 3... Glad you are enjoying it.
Kellyflower wrote: "Roshini wrote: "Finished it and definitely not as good as Going Too Far. What happened? It had so much promise! ..."Makes me wonder if this book was just written to fill a some contract or someth..."
Maybe. It's so sad, because I liked Going Too Far. Plus with Forget You, there seemed to be scope to expand on the characters. So should I take Endless Summer of my to-read list?:-)
Return to Paradise isn't here yet - I'm dying to read it!
Roshini wrote: "So should I take Endless Summer of my to-read list?:-) ."Yes or just read the first half of the book, which is actually her already released book
The Boys Next Door
I adored that book, it made me giggle.
Rita-Good thoughts or "wish I'd never read that" thoughts? I thought I Heart You, You Haunt Me sounded interesting . . . worth a read or not?
Arya wrote: "Rita-Good thoughts or "wish I'd never read that" thoughts? I thought I Heart You, You Haunt Me sounded interesting . . . worth a read or not?"
I loved IHEART YOU, YOU HAUNT ME plus it is a really fast read...like 45 minutes fast.
Finished The Hunger Games much to the relief of people around me how couldn't drag me out of the book ... Review coming in a while.
Arya wrote: "Nope, you will just have to finish it - and it doesn't end there, better go out and buy the other two so you will have them on hand as soon as you finish The Hunger Games!!!"Thanks for the advice, Arya. I've ordered them. Living in Switzerland has it's disadvantages! It's odd how the whole atmosphere of the book continues to hang around you. I'm not sure if its heavy or up-lifting.
Alyson (Kid Lit Frenzy) wrote: "Alan wrote: "Oh dear! I think I've caught The Hunger Games bug and can't put the book down! Is there an antidote?"Reading books 2 & 3... Glad you are enjoying it."
Thanks Alyson. Well at least I can get on with my own novel while I wait for the next books to arrive.
I'm hoping to read I Heart You, You Haunt Me soon. I keep hearing about it and I'm really looking forward to reading it. Although I couldn't make it fit into this challenge so I might have to deviate a bit.
I am about to start reading Witches Incorporated as soon as I've finished making notes about The Hunger Games.
Angela - I saw Gail Carriger about a month ago at a book signing. She was great. Very fun. And her fans are quite fun.Arya - I wasn't impressed with the Pace. So it will be interested to see what you think.
I'm reading It's Raining Cupcakes. After reading The Dead and the Gone I needed an easy light read to get out of the depressive mood the book put me in.

It seems to have gotten good reviews and I loved the cover right off the bat. Where did you see her, Aly?
