Audio Encounters of the Third Kind ~ Audiobook Challenge ~ Participants' Thread

I'm going to do the Six(teen) level Option 3. So far, I have finished 2/6
Contemporaries:
The Heist on July 1 which is less than 12 hours by a narrator I had listened to before. Book was ***. Narrator (Scott Brick) is *****. It was an easy listen and made an okay book better so A.
Kissed A Sad Goodbye a new to me narrator finished on July 17 (Jenny Sterlin) Book was **** Narrator was **** and experience was a B+ I like Crombie as a writer but she is relatively new to me so I'm trying to catch up on the series with both text and audio. She often uses flashbacks and I particularly enjoyed this one which had to do with children evacuated from London during the Blitz. (Not because I enjoy the topic but because I was getting ready to make a visit to the D-Day beaches in Normandy. )

Option 2: A minimum of 1 from each of the three genres
Book 1:
Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear 7/26/13
Historical
Book: ★★★★
Narrator: ★★★★
Experience: A
I would probably enjoy reading this the old fashioned way also since I liked the story and characters, however the narrator did a fabulous job with all the different accents.
Book 2
Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan 8/9/13
Contemporary
Book: ★★
Narrator: ★★★★
Experience: B
Narrator Juliet Stevenson does a great job narrating a boring, dull story.
I should have known better than to try another Ian McEwan novel. I didn't like Atonement much. I just think this author's style doesn't really engage me. On paper, it appears I should have really enjoyed this book about a female British spy. Sadly, I did not.

Finished Driving Mr. Dead on August 7. Book 3 1/2 *** Narrator **** so I would say B+. This is more typical of what I listen to driving to work because it's short and entertaining. I save more complex things for longer trips.
Next up another Molly Harper And One Last Thing ... and either a Lee Child or Michael Robotham mystery.

I probably should have read rather than listened to this book. The narrator is Irish, however for some reason she narrates in an over-enunciated, flat American accent. It was very distracting and at times annoying. She should have stuck with her Irish lilt, which is actually quite lovely.

I promise to get some housekeeping done here soon, hopefully this weekend unless I end up with a houseful - no one committed one way or the other. And I need to update my own challenge too - I've already passed my goal and am working on a higher level without posting an update... Bad host!

Book: ★★★½ Narrator: ★★★★ Experience: A-Narrator was great again, but the book was about 2 hours too long. I'm all for the sexy times but there were about 3 or 4 sex scenes that were not necessary.
Book 3
The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein 8/15/13
Contemporary
Book: ★★★★★
Narrator: ★★★★★
Experience: A
I absolutely loved this book. It's really hard to talk about, but it made me laugh and cry. The narrator did a wonderful job, considering the narrator is a dog named Enzo.
Book 4
TransAtlantic by Colum McCann8/26/13
Historical
Book: ★★★
Narrator: ★★
Experience:C
I probably should have read rather than listened to this book. The narrator is Irish, however for some reason she narrates in an over-enunciated, flat American accent. It was very distracting and at times annoying. She should have stuck with her Irish lilt, which is actually quite lovely.
Book 5
Messenger of Truth by Jacqueline Winspear 9/5/13
Historical
Book: ★★★
Narrator: ★★★
Experience: B
The narrator did a nice job, but I think I like the narrator for the other Maisie Dobbs book better. I thought she made Maisie sound much more posh than she should have.

Level: Six(teen) Candles - Listen to 6 books; Option: 2 - min of 1
Duration: July 1, 2013 - September 30, 2013
1. Contemporary:
1. Homer's Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, or How I Learned About Love and Life with a Blind Wonder Cat by Gwen Cooper, narrated by Renée Raudman; New author/narrator - 7/24/13.
Book: 3.5 - 4; Narrator: 3. Experience: B. I really enjoyed this book. I fell in love with Homer, and became fond of Scarlett and Vashti as well. The author really drew their personalities out very well. The narrator wasn't amazing but she wasn't bad either.
2. "Holiday Sparks" by Shannon Stacey, narrated by Savannah Richards; Under 12 hours - 9/12/13.
Book: 2.5 - 3; Narrator: 2.5. Experience: B-. While the narrator did not ruin the story for me, I would prefer to read sex scenes in print rather than listen to it.
2. Historical:
1. "Romeo and Juliet" by Shakespeare, narrated by L.A. Theatre Works; Under 12 hours - 9/11/13.
Book: 2.5 - 3; Narrator: 3. Experience: B. I didn't really care for the casting but they were pretty good voice actors.
2. Heirs and Graces by Rhys Bowen, narrated by Katherine Kellgren: Favorite author/narrator - 9/3/13.
Book: 3; Narrator: 3. Experience: A. I read this series entirely in audio and really cannot see myself reading it in print.
3. Paranormal:
1. Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon, narrated by Davina Porter: Favorite author/narrator - 7/21/13.
Book: 3.5; Narrator: 3.5. Experience: B+. There were times when I thought the narrator was excellent, and other times when I disagreed and/or disliked her take on a scene/word/phrase. I still prefer reading the book but the audio sometimes did add to the story.
2. "Shoggoth's Old Peculiar" by Neil Gaiman, narrated by Neil Gaiman: New author/narrator - 7/21/13.
Book: 2.5 - 3; Narrator - 2.5 - 3. Experience: B. It was read by the author, and that always has a certain charm. The author is not a bad narrator, but his stories are so odd that even in print, I have difficulty following what is going on; it was harder in audio. I didn't particularly like this story nor dislike it. It was just...odd.
Edit: Oh, hey. I finished the challenge! I didn't even realize! LOL
