SOLVED. book similar to maximum ride series, but probably for adults, not YA [s]

I am not sure when it was published but i read it the same year i read the first book in the maximum ride series. I remember the girl in it was raised by her father who kept her hidden because he was afraid the government would take her. her mother died giving birth. she ends up in the run and uses skills her father taught her to survive and she flies at the end of the book. i don't think it is even hinted at c that she can fly until then. i wish i could remember more

not fearless this girl flew at the end of the book and it did not seem like part of a series i love fearless (too bad the tv series got scrapped)

You may know this already, but James Patterson wrote two adult fiction books with the same subject - genetically altered children with wings - before the Maximum Ride series came out. The titles are When the Wind Blows and The Lake House.

The plot was similar but did have some differences. From what I remember, the kids in the book were being protected/hidden by a man - I don't think he was actually related to them but was trying to keep them out of the hands of the bad guys. Something about the girl flying at the end sounds familiar too, although it's been a long time since I've read these.
